Underground poker ring, debt: Indian-origin engineer jailed in New Zealand for $1m fraud, he was planning to move to Australia

Indian-origin engineer Shyamal Shah jailed for $1 million fraud in Auckland, New Zealand. (Photo: NZ Herald) An Indian-origin engineer, Shyamal Sushil Shah, a former Auckland Council employee, has been sentenced to two years and two months in prison for over $1 million fraud from the public sector, New Zealand Herald reported. Shah pleaded guilty at the Auckland District Court and his plea for bail and home detention has been denied. Shah used to work as a water network engineer at Watercare and carried out the massive fraud over a 17-month period. He came up with a scheme of generating fake invoices under bogus names and payments to those were credited directly to Shah's personal account. Some 40 fake invoices for fake entities like "Gardener Construction", "Ben Gardener" were produced, resulting in about $1039146 deposited into his account. Watercare manages the Auckland region's drinking water and wastewater services. Shah was arrested in November 2023 which was supposed to be his final week at Watercare as he was already planning to relocate to Australia. Shah proposed to return the money he siphones using his KiwiSaver, a loan from his new employer, and financial help from his parents. 'I imagine, as any parent would be, they're horrified and distressed," Judge Kate Davenport commented, noting the parents' gesture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo According to the NZ Herald report, Shah's scam began as he got addicted to gambling that began as the SkyCity Casino. Shah's lawyer David Jones KC said despite the conviction, Shah completed 267 hours of charity work, held three new jobs and remains "very much sought after" in his field. Judge Davenport granted a 55% sentencing discount for Shah's guilty plea, prior good character, remorse, rehabilitation efforts, and repayment offer, but emphasised the need for deterrence and denunciation, NZ Herald reported.

Trade relief in Singapore: Indian firms to gain from new adaptation grant; US tariffs push government to act

Indian enterprises operating in Singapore are expected to benefit from a new Business Adaptation Grant unveiled by the city-state to help local firms manage the challenges arising from global tariff shifts, including those tied to recent US trade measures. The Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) welcomed the government's announcement, calling the grant a 'timely intervention' to help businesses—particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)—navigate the evolving cross-border tax landscape, PTI reported. 'This grant is available to all local businesses, especially Small and Medium Enterprises,' SICCI said, adding that the move reflects a 'proactive and strategic approach' to support companies amid growing complexities in international trade. The Business Adaptation Grant, set to launch in October, was announced by the Singapore Economic Resilience Taskforce (SERT) and will provide up to SGD 1,00,000 (around $78,000) per eligible company. According to Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng, SMEs are likely to receive a higher co-funding percentage than larger multinational firms. Although Singapore has not yet received a formal notification of new US tariffs, its neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia are expected to face import duties of 25% and 32%, respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The new American tariffs come as part of a broader protectionist move, posing indirect risks to Singapore-based exporters and supply chains. SICCI said the grant will help companies reassess supply chains, adjust pricing strategies, seek new markets, and invest in trade advisory services to stay competitive. The chamber affirmed its commitment to assisting members in accessing the funds and aligning operations with the shifting global trade environment. 'We will work closely with government agencies, particularly Enterprise Singapore, to ensure that businesses, especially those from the Indian business community, can effectively benefit from this initiative and develop sustainable trade strategies,' said SICCI chairman Neil Parekh. Tan noted that SMEs employ about two-thirds of Singapore's workforce and will be a primary focus of the scheme. The grant will cover two business categories and will be available for a 'time-bound period' of two years. Singapore plays a key role as a global business hub, and the US remains one of its major trading partners. The new grant is expected to cushion the impact of shifting trade dynamics and reinforce resilience in the city-state's SME sector. Patna: Amid much debate about the selection of principals in Patna University's (PU) constituent colleges through a draw of lots, Nagendra Prasad Verma joined Magadh Mahila College as its principal on Thursday. The name of Verma as one of the 115 principals was recommended recently by Bihar State University Service Commission in response to an all-India advertisement and his posting in a women's college was finalised by the PU through a draw of lots.
