Bus plunges off bridge in northern Nigeria, killing 22 athletes
The bus, which was reportedly carrying more than 30 passengers, plunged off the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway on Saturday, Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf told The Associated Press news agency.
The exact cause of the accident was not known, but the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said it 'might have occurred as a result of fatigue and excessive speed' after a long overnight trip.
The survivors of the crash were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Yusuf said the athletes, who were accompanied by their coaches and sporting officials, were representing Kano State at the Nigerian National Sports Festival, held about 1,000km (620 miles) to the south in Ogun State.
He declared Monday a day of mourning for the state. His deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, said the families of the victims would receive 1 million naira (about $630) and food supplies as support.
The National Association of Nigerian Students released a statement, Nigerian daily The Guardian reported, saying the 'heartbreaking' incident had 'cast a shadow of grief over the entire nation, particularly the youth and sports communities'.
Road accidents are common in Africa's most populous country, in part due to poor road conditions and lax enforcement of traffic laws.
In March, at least six people died near the capital, Abuja, after a trailer crashed into parked vehicles and burst into flames.
Last year, Nigeria recorded 9,570 road accidents that resulted in 5,421 deaths, according to FRSC data.
The Nigerian National Sports Festival brings together athletes from the country's 35 states every two years.
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu recently said the games, which include sports ranging from wheelchair basketball to traditional West African wrestling, represent 'the unity, strength and resilience that define us as a nation'.

Withdrawal, absenteeism, or change of academic program without notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility.' In addition to security concerns, the U.S. government has also issued fresh visa-related warnings to Nigerian applicants. On July 8, 2025, the U.S. Department of State revised its visa reciprocity policy, reducing the validity of most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas for Nigerian citizens to three months, single entry. Previously issued visas remain valid under their original terms. Furthermore, in a July 28, 2025 memo, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria warned that travel primarily for childbirth purposes, commonly referred to as birth tourism, is prohibited. Visa applications suspected of being linked to this practice may be denied, with applicants subject to heightened scrutiny and possible penalties for misrepresentation. Together, these measures reflect a broader tightening of U.S. immigration controls targeting both security and immigration integrity concerns. US forces capture ISIS finance chief in Somalia
American military forces successfully captured multiple members of ISIS-Somalia on Friday in a ground raid in Somalia's Puntland state. U.S. Africa Command announced on Saturday that it carried out an operation against ISIS-Somalia on July 25. The release did not include details on the nature of the operation or if any ISIS members were killed or captured; saying that '[s]pecific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security.' 'AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade ISIS-Somalia's ability to plan and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad,' AFRICOM's release said. However, the Puntland Defense Force, the main counter-terrorism body for the state, posted on X that their U.S. partners successfully captured ISIS-Somalia's finance chief Abdiweli Mohamed Yusuf, along with two others. Additionally an AFRICOM spokesperson said in a statement to Task & Purpose that AFRICOM is 'currently assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information on ISIS-Somalia individuals captured as appropriate.' Yusuf, also known as Abdiweli Walalac, has served as the chief financial leader for the terrorist group in Somalia since at least 2019. In June 2023, the U.S. Department of the Treasury listed him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and imposed sanctions on him.
