Debutants galore as Lions change it up for Force battle

Yahoo26-06-2025
A total of nine players could make their British and Irish Lions debut in Saturday night's tour match against the Western Force, but Irish duo Jamison Gibson-Park and Hugo Keenan will be given more time to recover.
Lions coach Andy Farrell has named Irish and Leinster hooker Dan Sheehan as captain against the Force, while club teammates Garry Ringrose, James Lowe, Joe McCarthy and Josh van Der Flier will also make their debuts.
A further four players are set to make their Lions debuts off the bench - England and Leicester Tigers lock Ollie Chessum, Scotland and Glasgow Warriors centre Huw Jones, Ireland and Leinster Rugby prop Andrew Porter and England and Bath Rugby prop Will Stuart.
Irish scrumhalf Gibson-Park (glute) and fullback Keenan (calf) arrived in Australia with injury concerns and won't be risked against the Force.
Farrell didn't mince his words following the Lions' shock 28-24 loss to Argentina in Dublin last weekend, and he's looking for a response against the Force.
Scotland's Sione Tuipulotu and Irish forward Tadhg Beirne are the only two starters from the game against Argentina who have retained their place in the XV.
Even if the Lions had beaten Argentina, Farrell would have still overhauled his side to get a better look at the 38-man squad at his disposal.
"We have had a good week of training and all of the travel and time zone changes have been managed really well, so we are good to go," Farrell said. "Dan Sheehan gets the opportunity to lead the side against Western Force, which is a great honour for him and his family - so congratulations to Dan as he captains the side on his Lions debut.
"We know the quality and experience the Force have and the opportunity to play against the Lions always brings out special performances from the Super Rugby sides, so we expect them to be at their best."
The Lions beat the Force 69-17 at Subiaco Oval in 2013 when the teams last locked horns.
But the Force are expected to be much stiffer competition this time around, with a crowd in excess of 45,000 expected at Optus Stadium.
Although Kurtley Beale has been ruled out with the hamstring injury he suffered at training on Tuesday, the Force team boasts a wealth of current or former Wallabies.
Ben Donaldson, Tom Robertson, Darcy Swain, Nick Champion de Crespigny, Nic White and Dylan Pietsch have all been released from Wallabies camp to play against the Lions.
LIONS XV: Elliot Daly (Saracens/England), Mack Hansen (Connacht Rugby/Ireland), Garry Ringrose (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Sione Tuipulotu (Glasgow Warriors/Scotland), James Lowe (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Finn Russell (Bath Rugby/Scotland), Tomos Williams (Gloucester Rugby/Wales), Henry Pollock (Northampton Saints/England), Josh van der Flier (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Tadhg Beirne (Munster Rugby/Ireland), Joe McCarthy (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Scott Cummings (Glasgow Warriors/ Scotland), Tadhg Furlong (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Dan Sheehan (Leinster Rugby/Ireland - capt), Pierre Schoeman (Edinburgh Rugby/Scotland).
RESERVES: Ronan Kelleher (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Andrew Porter (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Will Stuart (Bath Rugby/England), Ollie Chessum (Leicester Tigers/England), Jack Conan (Leinster Rugby/Ireland), Alex Mitchell (Northampton Saints/England), Huw Jones (Glasgow Warriors/Scotland), Marcus Smith (Harlequins/ England).

'I never once thought I needed to get out'

Jack Butland insists he never considered seeking an escape route this summer and Rangers remains the club "where I want to be". The former England goalkeeper lost his Ibrox starting spot to Liam Kelly during the final months of last term under interim boss Barry Ferguson. But Butland, 32, was give the gloves by new head coach Russell Martin for the season-opening first-leg win over Panathinaikos in Champions League qualifying last week and is determined to build on that impressive performance. "Has it been smooth sailing, my time at the club? Not for me personally, for all of us, no, it's not been quite as successful as we'd like it to have been," Butland told Sky Sports. "I never lost that, I didn't walk away from the season thinking, although some people like to try and make those stories up, that that's the end of it. "I was very determined that I will determine how my career goes here. "Obviously things can be taken out of your hands at times, but I was very adamant in the summer that regardless of what happens, what managerial changes, ownership changes, that I was going to come in and be the best version of myself and at least give myself the opportunity to have control of what happens next. "I hope I've managed to do that. I certainly feel fit and sharp and positive and looking forward to the season ahead at a club where I want to be. "I never once looked away from it and thought I need a change or I need to get out. "I need to keep my head up, stick my chest out and get on with it. That's the plan."

Former Olympic champion Dujardin makes dressage comeback after whipping ban

Former Olympic dressage champion Charlotte Dujardin returned to action at the weekend after serving a one-year suspension over a horse-whipping controversy that led to her withdrawal from the Paris Games. The British rider competed at the Hunters Equestrian event in Gloucestershire, in the west of England. Dujardin, who has won six Olympic medals including individual gold in 2012 and 2016, was banned for a year in December by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI). But she had been provisionally suspended since July 2024. Dujardin is now free to compete in domestic events and does not need to seek permission from British Equestrian to do so, though she would need to seek its permission to compete internationally. The 40-year-old won in two categories at the Hunters Equestrian on her new horse, Special Effect. Dujardin was provisionally suspended last July after international governing body the FEI launched an investigation into a video showing her repeatedly striking a horse on its legs. The footage, dating back several years, related to a training session at a stable and sparked widespread condemnation. Dujardin, who was also fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($12,400), withdrew from the Paris Olympics just days before they started saying she had made an "error of judgement" and expressed deep remorse. She could have become Britain's most decorated woman Olympian in the French capital, where a medal of any colour would have taken her clear of cyclist Laura Kenny, with whom she is tied on six medals. Her two best horses, Imhotep and Times Kismet, have been sold since the scandal broke. Times Kismet was sold to backers of Germany's quadruple Olympic gold medallist Jessica von Bredow-Werndl. jw/pi
