M&S advert banned by watchdog for promoting 'unhealthily thin' model

The fashion advert has been pulled following criticism from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA.)
M&S has come under fire for an online fashion advert. It has since been pulled following criticism from the UK's advertising watchdog.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) deemed it was "irresponsible" for M&S to utilise the image in question to advertise its clothes on its mobile app, as it showed an "unhealthily thin" model.

Condemning the ad, the ASA advised that the model, wearing slim-fit trousers and a white top, "appeared thin and she wore large pointed shoes which emphasised the slenderness of her legs".

It also observed the camera angles made the model's head appear disproportionate and "highlighted her small frame", reports the Mirror.
The ASA determined: "Therefore, we considered that the pose of the model and the choice of clothing meant the ad gave the impression that the model was unhealthily thin".
Following the prohibition, Marks and Spencer expressed remorse for any distress caused and swiftly removed the image. A representative for the retailer stated: "Our womenswear sizing ranges from size 8 to 24 and we always want to reflect that in our advertising."

They added: "The product images on our website feature models of varying sizes so we can appeal to all our customers, however following the ASA guidance, we have removed this particular image from our website and apologise for any offence caused."
Whilst three additional images were flagged to the ASA by worried shoppers, the authority did not deem these to be in breach, therefore no further action against the high street giant was pursued.

It comes as four individuals have been apprehended by the police in connection with cyber attacks on M&S, Co-op, and Harrods.
The arrests encompass three teenagers – a 17 year old British lad from the West Midlands, a 19 year old Latvian man also from the West Midlands, a 19 year old British chap from London – and a 20 year old British woman from Staffordshire.

The suspects were taken into custody on suspicion of blackmail, money laundering, offences related to the Computer Misuse Act, and involvement in the activities of an organised crime group. All four remain in custody.
Paul Foster, who leads the NCA's National Cyber Crime Unit, commented: "Since these attacks took place, specialist NCA cybercrime investigators have been working at pace and the investigation remains one of the agency's highest priorities."
He continued: "Today's arrests are a significant step in that investigation but our work continues, alongside partners in the UK and overseas, to ensure those responsible are identified and brought to justice."

Following the cyber attack, which occurred over the Easter weekend and disrupted contactless payments in stores as well as click and collect orders, M&S had to temporarily close its online shop.
It was subsequently revealed that customer data was compromised, including names, email addresses, physical addresses, and dates of birth; however, card or payment details were not affected.

The head of M&S provided an update last week, stating that the remainder of its online operations should be back up and running by next month. The supermarket began to resume online orders in June, but some services are yet to return to normal.
For instance, customers are still unable to place orders for click and collect or next day delivery. Furthermore, M&S is not currently delivering to Northern Ireland.
Stuart Machin, CEO of M&S, anticipates these services will be fully operational from August.
Addressing shareholders at the retailer's annual general meeting, he stated: "Since these attacks took place, specialist NCA cybercrime investigators have been working at pace and the investigation remains one of the Agency's highest priorities."

Motorists warned after nine out of ten drivers admit to breaking this strict rule

Drivers could be fined £200 and hit with six points if they are caught breaking the law. Warnings have been issued after nine out of 10 drivers admitted to not being able to stay off their mobile phones when driving. Despite being against the law, motorists said they can't seem to break the habit of looking at their devices when behind the wheel. ‌ This is despite the risk of £200 fines and six penalty points if caught. The increased use of advanced roadside cameras is also helping to detect mobile phone use by distracted drivers. Following changes in March 2022, motorists who use a handheld mobile phone while behind the wheel will be deemed to be breaking the law. ‌ This includes taking photos or videos, scrolling through music playlists, using streaming services, or playing games, as the government closes a loophole previously exploited by dangerous drivers to escape conviction. ‌ A report from IMS, a global authority in telematics and connected motor insurance technology, has highlighted the problem of mobile phone use while driving. The research shows that only 10% of motorists manage to drive from start to finish without interacting with their device. The data is based on survey results from 500,000 drivers over the past year, originally shared exclusively with This is Money. ‌ IMS's CEO Paul Stacy said: 'Our latest findings show the scale of the issue distracted driving has become on British roads and make clear that the vast majority of us are guilty of it. 'The insurance industry is increasingly using smartphone technology to monitor and manage the road risk of policyholders that buy a usage-based insurance product, and from this data, we can see that smartphone distraction remains a significant contributor to road collisions and insurance claims.' RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis continued: 'We saw a reduction in motorists admitting to illegal handheld phone use after the penalties were toughened in 2017 following pressure from the RAC, but numbers are on the rise again now. ‌ 'In fact, our research shows the proportion of young drivers making and receiving calls illegally hit its highest rate in eight years in 2024. 'Enforcement of the law is critical, so we encourage police forces to roll out more roadside cameras to catch people in the act and get them to change their ways.' Government data showed that last year, mobile phone use was a contributing factor in 23 road fatalities. However, official statistics also show that 'distraction or impairment' was the third most common cause of fatal crashes, playing a role in 34.9% of deadly incidents.

Two British brothers drown in front of dad while swimming on holiday

Two British brothers have drowned in front of their father on a beach in Spain. The boys, aged 11 and 13, got into difficulty at sea off Llarga Beach in Salou, Tarragona yesterday evening. Their dad went into the sea with them and was rescued alive. Both of the boys had died by the time emergency help arrived and efforts to save them were unsuccessful. The British family are understood to be staying at a nearby hotel. The deaths mark the 15th and 16th fatalities on beaches in Catalan since the beginning of the summer season began on June 15. Catalonia's Civil Protection said in a statement: 'Two brothers, of British nationality and aged 11 and 13, drowned this evening on the Llarga beach in Salou (Tarragona). 'The father of the minors, who had also entered the water, was rescued alive. 'These are the 15th and 16th fatalities on Catalan beaches since the summer campaign officially began on June 15, a figure that already exceeds by five those registered in the same period last summer (11). More Trending 'The emergency telephone number 112 received the warning at 8.47pm. Seven land units of the Medical Emergency System (SEM) intervened in the incident, as well as a team of psychologists activated by the same service to assist the relatives.' It added: 'The Civil Protection of the Generalitat reminds us of the importance of taking extreme precautions on beaches, swimming pools and inland waters this summer. 'If you notice that someone is unwell or has difficulties in the water, you should urgently notify the lifeguard service or call 112 to facilitate their rapid action.'
