Everyone around the NBA knows that the Los Angeles Lakers need a center as the offseason gets going. However, the Lakers do have more needs that the front office needs to address across the roster.

One of those needs is along the wing, and the Lakers have been rumored to be looking to add more talent. Los Angeles is likely to retain Dorian Finney-Smith, but they also need more help.
A name that has started to circulate around the Lakers is veteran wing Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat. Wiggins could check a lot of boxes for the Lakers, and it seems that the team could be interested in landing him.
Lakers insider Anthony Irwin reported that Los Angeles has checked in on Wiggins with Miami. Irwin mentioned that the contract situation could make things tough, but it seems that the Lakers are doing their due diligence.
"Wiggins... have I heard of any interest in him? I think right now the Lakers are interested in any athlete," Irwin began on the Lakers Lounge. "Now Wiggins does make a little too much money for my liking. $28 million is a lot for Andrew Wiggins. I would imagine they are very well in tune with what Pat thinks of Andrew Wiggins, but the Lakers have checked in on him and asked about what the price would be."

Adding a player like Wiggins could help the Lakers, especially on the defensive side of the ball. While he isn't the same level of defender that he once was, Wiggins is much more skilled defensively than Rui Hachimura.

In 17 games with the Heat this season, Wiggins averaged 19.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Los Angeles would likely need to send a decent amount out to land Wiggins, but it could be worth it.
If the Lakers are looking to address the center position with a "stop-gap" type of player, the front office could look to land Wiggins as the big move. Adding him to a team with Luka Doncic and LeBron James could make the Lakers much more formidable, giving them a better chance to win a title next season.

He led the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011 before stepping down abruptly in September 2014. Washington returned to the sport as a coach with the Athletics and the Atlanta Braves, who won the World Series in 2021, before landing a second managerial job in Orange County. The Angels were 40-40 entering Friday night's game against the visiting Washington Nationals, winning three straight under Montgomery and seven of 10 overall. Los Angeles has played better than most expected from a team with major league-worst streaks of nine straight losing seasons and 10 straight non-playoff seasons. The 55-year-old Montgomery is getting his first job as a major league manager. The native of New York's Westchester County is a former Houston Astros outfielder who served as the scouting director for Arizona and Milwaukee before joining the Angels as their director of player personnel for the 2020 season. Montgomery became Los Angeles' bench coach in 2021 after general manager Perry Minasian took over the front office, and he stayed with the Angels while Joe Maddon, Phil Nevin and Washington managed the club. Goins played eight seasons in the major leagues before Washington hired him as the Angels' infield coach before the 2024 season.

Adou Thiero on two NBA players he's trying to learn from
As the Los Angeles Lakers look to restock their roster with more complementary talent nearly five months after the Luka Doncic trade, they're hoping that incoming rookie Adou Thiero will be part of their core for years to come. They acquired his rights on Thursday after he was the No. 36 pick in the draft, and he seems to have the natural tools to become a legitimate rotation player, if not a starter, someday. While he cannot shoot straight from the perimeter, he's very athletic and attacks the basket relentlessly, and he has the ability to disrupt things on the defensive end. If he pans out, the 6-foot-8 forward could be the type of two-way wing the Lakers need more of. He joined Los Angeles-based Spectrum SportsNet for an interview and said he's studying two of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA to model his game after them. 'I watch a lot of defenders, trying to pick up on what they do in the league, that's a different level. It's a lot of different stuff offensive players do in the league, so just trying to pick up off of OG Anunoby, Jrue Holiday, he's a great defender. Just picking up on what they do, watching how they play defense.' Anunoby, who plays for the New York Knicks and helped transform them into contenders when they traded for him midway through last season, is an excellent perimeter defender who also averaged 18.0 points a game this season and is a dependable 3-point shooter. Holiday is one of the best defenders at the point guard position, and he absolutely covers opponents like a straitjacket. He helped the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics win the NBA championship in 2021 and 2024, respectively. The Lakers are hoping for similar results as Thiero gets acclimated to his new surroundings.

It was meant to be quite the finale in the City of Stars this weekend. Instead, the inaugural Grand Slam Track season came to a halt with the cancellation of its final leg in Los Angeles earlier in June. Advertisement The league became a talking point and a source of excitement for track athletes signed to Grand Slam Track, especially those from North America. It provided an opportunity for athletes to compete against the best without having to travel overseas. Toronto sprinter Aaron Brown, who competed in the most recent event in Philadelphia, feels the league brought something greater to the sport for Canadians. "For athletes in Canada or athletes in America, being able to just stay within the country or go to Jamaica somewhere on this similar time zone, you know, not having to go overseas it's a huge benefit," he said. "It allows us to have better performances too because you're not having a deal with such jet lag, ... you don't have to show up (to the meet) super early you can train a little bit longer and harder and be in your the comfort of your own home for a longer time." Advertisement Michael Johnson, the founder and commissioner of Grand Slam Track, said the league is looking ahead to 2026 and beyond. "Sometimes we have to make moves that aren't comfortable, but what's most important is the future and sustainability of the league,' he said as part of a statement. Brown says the opportunity is there for fans in North America to get used to the faces of the sport's stars that will be at the 2028 L.A. Olympics. "I think meets like the Grand Slam are finally going to get us to that point where we can take advantage of it," he said. "Especially heading into L.A. 2028, that's a huge opportunity for people to get used to who the stars are going to be in L.A., get an early look at them, and be able to follow them into their, into the journey to that meet. And so I just think that if track and field wants to have a professional league, this is the best way for them to do it. And, you know, I'm invested in their success." Seven-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse of Markham, Ont., is another one of Canada's stars to have competed in Grand Slam, in addition to 2023 800-metre world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist Marco Arop, who competed in both the 800 and 1,500 as a short-distance racer. Arop stood out among the Canadian cohort, winning the 800 races in the three Grand Slam events held. Although he didn't fare as well in the 1,500, Arop was among the top point-getters in the short distance group, finishing no lower than second and being first at the Philadelphia event. Competition aside, Brown said Grand Slam Track provided things that are not typically offered at other meets. He also said athletes got their own rooms for accomodations, were given per diems that were provided "to go select the food ourselves," and that the prize money was "significantly more than any other meet that's available to the athletes." "I think at the very least, it gave us the blueprint of how a meet could be run and what's possible," Brown said. "Getting out of that myopic viewpoint that we have to follow the same model and do things that we've been doing for decades that has led to stagnation in the sport and not allow us to evolve and grow and adapt like all the other sports have. "So, I think just showing that athletes can be at the forefront. We have stars in our sports, and the more support we get behind it, the bigger it's going to be."
