How can eating junk food cause chronic inflammation in your body that can lead to serious health risks?

Indian Express04-05-2025
Ever wondered why you get a fever when you have the flu or diarrhoea when you eat something bad, or swelling when you twist your ankle? That's inflammation.
Yes, our body tries to heal on its own, and the infection subsides once the repair is done. But inflammation can turn harmful if it lingers too long. It becomes a problem when it becomes chronic.
Deepika Sharma, a personal trainer, states, 'Inflammation turns into a low-grade, persistent activation of the immune system, which can silently damage tissues and organs over time.'
High consumption of processed foods (particularly refined sugars, trans fats, and seed oils), long-term stress, insufficient sleep, sedentary lifestyles, and environmental pollutants are common causes of chronic inflammation. These unhealthy foods can cause several health risks. The trainer explains that these stressors disrupt metabolic pathways, increase oxidative stress, and promote the release of inflammatory markers such as CRP, IL-6, and TNF-alpha.
Inflammation is not the problem, says Deepika Sharma. According to her, directly treating inflammation (for example, with NSAIDs) may provide temporary relief, but the inflammation will continue unless the underlying cause—lifestyle, hormone imbalance, gut health, or diet—is found and addressed.
How to reduce inflammation?
Deepika Sharma suggests several foods to reduce inflammation in the body:
1. Anti-inflammatory fats: Olive oil, avocados, ghee.
2. Fibre-rich plants: Veggies, berries, legumes
3. Omega-3s: Fatty fish, chia seeds, flaxseeds
4. Spices: Turmeric + black pepper, ginger, cinnamon

5. Probiotic & prebiotic foods: Yogurt, fermented veggies, garlic, onion
She advises some daily habits to incorporate in our lifestyle:
1. Sleep on time: Poor sleep raises inflammatory markers
2. Move: Exercise reduces systemic inflammation
3. Meditate: Mindfulness lowers IL-6 and CRP
4. Stop snacking constantly: Let your body rest.
Foods to avoid
The trainer warns against consuming certain foods that may trigger prolonged inflammation in the body:
1. Processed Sugar: It causes a cytokine storm and raises insulin. For instance, candy, soda, and 'healthy' cereal.
2. Refined Carbs: White bread, pasta, and white rice are examples of refined carbohydrates that can cause fluctuations in blood sugar.
3. Seed oils: Seed oils, such as sunflower, soybean, and maize oil (found in most processed foods), cause omega imbalance, which is a cellular chaos according to Ayurveda (excess pitta).
4. Processed Meats: Processed meats, such as sausages, bacon and gammon, produce AGEs, nitrites, and damage to the immune system.
5. Alcohol: Alcohol causes dehydration and damage to the gut wall.

Ayurveda Expert Shares Why Neem Is The Ultimate Monsoon Skin Fix

Last Updated: Known for its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties, neem is the ultimate ingredient that can help treat all monsoon skin problems. The monsoon may bring welcome relief from the heat, but it also introduces a host of skin concerns, such as excess oil, fungal infections, breakouts, and irritation due to high humidity. Thankfully, nature offers a powerful solution in Neem, an age-old Ayurvedic remedy known for its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. ' Neem is a versatile and time-tested herb that helps restore balance to the skin, especially in seasons like the monsoon when moisture and pollution aggravate common skin conditions," says Dr. Bhavana S. Gaitonde, Ayurveda expert at Himalaya Wellness Company. From acne control to dandruff defence, incorporating Neem into your daily routine can significantly reduce the seasonal toll on your skin and scalp. 1. Clarify Oily Skin with a Neem Face Pack Humidity often triggers excess sebum production and clogged pores. A neem face pack made with neem powder and water, rose water, or honey helps purify the skin, curb acne, and prevent future breakouts. Apply this clarifying mask 2–3 times a week to keep skin fresh and matte. 2. Soothe Rashes with Neem-Infused Bath Water Fungal infections, itching, and body rashes become common during the monsoon, especially in skin folds. Add neem to your bathwater by boiling its leaves and straining the water, or mix a few drops of pure neem oil into your bucket. This helps calm irritation and reduce bacterial growth. 3. Target Trouble Spots with Neem Oil Neem oil, when mixed with a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil, works wonders on pimples, mosquito bites, and other minor irritations. Apply directly using a cotton swab for antiseptic, anti-inflammatory action that speeds up healing and reduces redness. 4. Use Neem Water as a Natural Toner Pollution and humidity can lead to dullness and enlarged pores. Boil neem leaves, cool and strain the water, and use it as a toner after cleansing. This helps tighten pores, refresh skin, and acts as a natural antibacterial shield. 5. Detox Your Scalp with a Neem Hair Mask An oily scalp, dandruff, and hair fall often flare up in the monsoon. Mix neem powder with curd or water to create a scalp pack. Apply once a week before shampooing to control flaking, soothe itchiness, and strengthen roots for healthier, fuller hair. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 12:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sudden hair loss and hair thinning? Dermat shares 3 medical conditions that can trigger alopecia

Not all hair loss is a cause for concern, as the hair growth cycle often resets naturally. However, sudden or excessive hair loss may signal an underlying issue. One such condition is alopecia, which affects millions of people worldwide each year. Alopecia can occur at any age and may be linked to genetic factors, lifestyle habits, or other underlying health conditions. Also read | Facing sudden hair loss? Dermat explains if it's hair fall attack or hair cycle reset Alopecia can point to underlying health conditions, lifestyle factors, or genetic predispositions. (Freepik) In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Amrutha Hosalli Karjol, consultant and chief dermatologist, Vrudhii, Skin Center and Surgery Clinic, Hesargatta Road, Bengaluru said, 'While some hair shedding is normal, sudden or excessive hair fall can be distressing and may indicate the need for medical attention. Early recognition and timely management are crucial in preventing long-term damage to hair follicles and restoring confidence.' Certain medical conditions can trigger and worsen alopecia. Dr Amrutha Hosalli Karjol shared the common causes of sudden hair loss that need immediate attention. 1. Hormonal imbalances and endocrine disorders Changes in hormone levels, particularly due to thyroid disorders or conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), can disrupt the hair growth cycle. In women, elevated androgens may weaken hair follicles, leading to gradual thinning along the crown or widening of the hair parting. Also read | Blaming stress for hair loss? Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions Diseases such as alopecia areata and lupus trigger the immune system to mistakenly attack healthy hair follicles. This often results in sudden, patchy hair loss on the scalp, beard, or other body parts. In some cases, inflammation of the scalp due to conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis can worsen hair fall. 3. Post-illness and nutritional deficiencies Major illnesses, high fevers, or post-viral syndromes, including COVID-19, can cause telogen effluvium, where hair shifts into a shedding phase. Inadequate intake of proteins, iron, vitamin D, and other micronutrients also weaken the hair structure, making strands more prone to breakage and fall. This can lead to noticeable hair thinning and hair loss.
