Desaru Coast unveils a bigger and bolder 2025 Ombak Festival
MALAYSIA: Desaru Coast has just unveiled its bigger and bolder Ombak Festival for 2025. The action-packed weekend includes Simply Red headlining the event with a star-studded ensemble, including international and local acts.
Happening from Sept 12 to 14, 2025, it will be fun for everyone and a celebration of creativity, culture, and community. The event is being hosted by Desaru Coast, the perfect award-winning destination resort and home to five-star resorts all within walking distance of the festival village.

The festival also welcomes funk legend George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, while Joss Stone offers a soulful preview of her upcoming 2025 album and DJ duo Flight Facilities make their long-awaited Malaysian debut. Taking the same stage are ASEAN powerhouses of talent — Thailand's Phum Viphurit, our very own anak Johor, Joe Flizzow and friends, SonaOne and Ismail Izzani, Malaysian ska veterans Gerhana Skacinta, Singapore's The Pinholes, and Indonesia's Diskoria and Tanayu — and we have more Southeast Asian acts to announce in July,' Karina said.

The 10-foot Meera & Fiz represent figures from Johor's rich folklore and were crowd favourites last year, together. There will also be kitemaking lessons with Go Fly Kites and super-sized garden games by Mereka Games, both returning due to popular demand.

Head to Gardens by the Bay for a fireflies inspired light show and giant orchid display
In celebration of SG60, Gardens by the Bay has launched its popular Orchid Extravaganza at the Flower Dome, alongside the Southeast Asian debut of Spark – a light installation resembling fireflies in the night sky. The free installation plays out every evening at the Supertree Grove Lawn until Aug 3. Created by internationally renowned Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde, the immersive installation is customised for every city it visits. For Singapore, the weight, flight patterns and choreography of the light sparks were specially adapted to suit the tropical climate. Rising and falling on natural air currents, thousands of floating biodegradable light sparks create a one-of-a-kind, ever-changing show each night. Over at the Flower Dome, the proudly local Orchid Extravaganza floral display will wow visitors with a vibrant landscape of more than 6,000 orchids – in a tribute to the flower's enduring presence in Singapore's history. On show are Singapore's national flower, the Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim (Vanda Miss Joaquim), as well as unique hybrids named after local places and institutions. For instance, Choa Chu Kang has its own orchid, the Papilionanda Chua Chu Kang. There's also the Dendrobium Incredible NUHS Nurses and Vanda KK Women's and Children's Hospital. Another highlight is Cultural Medallion recipient Lee Hock Moh's acclaimed gongbi-style orchid paintings. To commemorate SG60, Lee painted a new piece, Dancing Petals, Joyful Laughter, in which six parrots represent six decades of unity, shared progress and success of the country. In addition, visitors can appreciate gold-plated orchid pieces from RISIS, authentic and intricate Peranakan attire such as kebayas and beaded slippers contributed by designer Raymond Wong from Rumah Kim Choo, as well as traditional furniture and other cultural artefacts from the collection of the Peranakan Museum, on loan from the National Heritage Board. Flower Dome ticket holders can also enjoy complimentary entry to the Peranakan Museum for a limited time. Orchid Extravaganza runs until Aug 31. 'Gardens by the Bay is not only a national garden but a People's Garden; a verdant space for the community to gather and bond amidst a rich, year-round calendar of events," said Gardens by the Bay chief executive officer, Felix Loh. National Museum of Singapore to launch first exhibition as part of revamp
SINGAPORE: Following a 10-month closure, the National Museum of Singapore will be opening the first of its revamped permanent galleries on Aug 8. The newly-named Shaw Foundation Glass Rotunda will exhibit a multi-sensorial experience titled Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time, said the museum on Thursday (Jul 31). Presented through animation and interactive elements, the installation highlights major milestones in Singapore's 700 years of history. It replaces the Story of the Forest exhibition, which centred on the William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings. "With Singapore Odyssea, we wanted to continue drawing on our collection and rich stories to present Singapore's history in an engaging and relevant way - this creates an accessible entry point, while honouring the depth and significance of our history," said Ms Chung May Khuen, director of the National Museum of Singapore. "In presenting Story of the Forest, we pushed the boundaries of a conventional museum-going experience through technology and multimedia to create a highly immersive space," Ms Chung added. "This was the impetus behind incorporating further multisensorial and interactive elements in Singapore Odyssea that we hope will continue to excite and enchant our visitors." Designed by local artists, Singapore Odyssea acts as an immersive time-travelling voyage and features four episodes with scenes spanning from present-day Singapore to the pre-colonial Singapore period, consisting of local stories and myths associated with the nation's origins. "The installation gives cultural and historical context to Singapore's identity, adding depth and enhancing appreciation for its place in the region and the world," said the National Museum of Singapore. A two-minute light show anchored by a suspended LED globe, the first of its kind in a Singapore museum, will be one of the first attractions in the installation. The light show traces Singapore's evolution of maritime trade routes over the centuries. Visitors can also expect to see visual wall projections of animated scenes and soundscapes of significant moments in the nation's history like Singapore's first National Day Parade before wartime evacuations and ancient coastal communities. Singapore Odyssea ends at the base of the glass rotunda with a digital waterfall curtain that depicts more moments of Singapore's history as visitors approach it. The floor will also respond to movements, with each step creating digital ripples on the surface that will also interact with surrounding ripples made by others. Visitors can also use a personalised RFID-enabled wristband at the start of the installation as a guide. The wristband features nine companions inspired by Singapore's wildlife such as an otter, a crab and a hornbill. The companions respond to the user's movement and environment by lighting paths and triggering hidden animations. When approaching the concluding section, visitors can digitally release their RFID-enabled companions at a digital well. "This symbolic gesture reinforces the adage that what is borrowed from nature should be returned with care - a call to action to build a sustainable future for both people and the real-life counterparts of these companions," said the museum. The experience will be accompanied by media where myths of creatures such as the giant tide-moving crab and the magical tree of life Pauh Janggi are reinterpreted. Singapore Odyssea will run alongside other complementary showcases such as Once Upon A Tide which explores Singapore's maritime evolution and a series of programmes for the National Day Celebrations on Aug 9. "We hope that the bold and innovative storytelling in Singapore Odyssea will captivate and inspire visitors to take pride in our heritage and develop a deeper interest in Singapore's remarkable history," said Mr Mark Shaw, executive vice president and director of Shaw Foundation.

Lofi Girl has even found her way into politics. In the 2019 UK general election, the Conservatives YouTube channel released a video featuring then-prime minister Boris Johnson titled 'lo fi boriswave beats to relax/get brexit done to'. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te in 2023 called for members of the public to submit their lo-fi music for his '2024 Healing Music Submission Project' , describing the subgenre as 'an essential healing companion for modern people'. His channel, called Lofi on Lai, features 'healing, vocal-free versions of the Democratic Progressive Party's presidential campaign songs from 1996 to 2024'.
