Brother's advice leads to huge lottery win in North Carolina. ‘We hugged it out'

Miami Herald24-06-2025
A man followed his brother's advice — and it led to a huge lottery win in North Carolina.
'We hugged it out,' prize winner Patrick Kelly told the N.C. Education Lottery. 'It was a good feeling.'
The siblings celebrated after Kelly scored a $100,000 prize. He doesn't usually play scratch-off games but spent $20 on a ticket his brother recommended.
He listened to his brother on a trip to a Raceway gas station in Hickory, a roughly 55-mile drive northwest from Charlotte. While there, he tried his luck on the 100X the Cash game, lottery officials wrote in a June 23 news release.
Kelly was shocked to learn how much his ticket was worth.
'I was dumbfounded,' the lucky winner said.
Kelly, who lives in Hickory, kept $71,756 after taxes. Now, he plans to put his prize money toward investments and his student loans, according to lottery officials.
It's not the first time someone's advice has paid off. Another North Carolina lottery player listened to his mom and got a big 'blessing,' McClatchy News reported in March.

Michigan U.S. Army veteran receives new service dog in passing the leash ceremony

A U.S. Army veteran in Brighton, Michigan, received a new service dog named River on Friday. River, a 1-year-old Bernedoodle, will accompany Yvonne Allen, who served four years in the Army, to work, to the grocery store, and just about everywhere she needs to go. "He's a rock star; he makes things easier for me," Allen said. "I'm able to cope a lot better with him by my side." River is trained to help spot panic attacks, notice when blood pressure or sugar levels are too high or too low, and help Allen improve her quality of life. Kelly Meade took the lead on training River. "They are bred to be service dogs; they start training essentially at three days old, before their eyes are open," she said. Meade said the first thing to look for in a potential service dog is their natural temperament, and on days like Friday's passing of the leash, she said it feels good to give back. "It's very rewarding, extremely rewarding," she said. Roger Deaton, who serves as second vice commander for Michigan's American Legion, says he sees a true partnership between River and Allen. "These dogs are going to be a great way for them to feel loved, feel comfortable with society," he said. "A lot of veterans are coming back, and they have a lot of mental issues, so this dog is going to just be wonderful for the whole family. The dog is going to be loved, and the whole family is going to love this dog as well." If you or someone you know could be a good candidate to receive a dog like River, you can reach out to the Veteran Treatment Assistance Corps here.

Lottery player used the same numbers for 16 years. He's finally a jackpot winner

A lottery player used the same numbers for 16 years — and he's finally a jackpot winner. Paul Bierwirth's longtime tradition 'paid off' when his go-to numbers were picked in a drawing, the North Carolina Education Lottery said in a news release shared with McClatchy News on July 18 via email. Now, the lucky winner plans to help people impacted by Hurricane Helene, which battered parts of North Carolina in September. He hopes to donate some of his prize money to Samaritan's Purse, a charity that has raised funds for storm relief. Bierwirth won $439,226 after a stop at a Speedway gas station in Greenville, McClatchy News reported. While there, he tried his luck on the Carolina Cash 5 game, which offers tickets starting at $1. When Bierwirth was drinking his morning coffee, he checked the outcome of the July 14 drawing. That's when he realized his ticket beat 1-in-962,598 odds to hit the jackpot. Bierwirth lives in Greenville, a roughly 85-mile drive east from Raleigh. He kept $315,145 after taxes, according to lottery officials. It's not the first time sticking to a set of numbers has led to a big prize. Another North Carolina lottery player's persistence scored him a 'breathtaking' win, McClatchy News reported in June.

Powerball player wins $100,000 in Texas. Where was the lucky ticket sold?

A Powerball player in Texas won $100,000, just missing the $266 million jackpot, lottery officials said. The ticket matched four winning numbers, the Powerball and the Power Play multiplier in the drawing Wednesday, July 16, the California Lottery said. The lucky ticket was sold at Best Mart in Emory, which is about a 100-mile drive east from Fort Worth, lottery officials told McClatchy News in an email. Another player won $50,000 on a ticket sold at a Time Mart in Brookshire, which is about a 240-mile drive southeast from Fort Worth. The winning numbers were 4, 21, 43, 48 and 49 with a Powerball of 22. The Power Play multiplier was 2x. Powerball jackpot rises Nobody won the grand prize, which rises to an estimated $288 million, with a cash value of about $130.6 million, for the next drawing Saturday, July 19, the national Powerball site said. More than 405,000 other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $100,000, the lottery said. The Powerball jackpot was last won May 31, when a California player hit the $204.5 million grand prize. What to know about Powerball To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338. Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state. Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online. Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
