Harry Wilson's late try saves Australia in a 21-18 win over Fiji
Wilson twisted and spun over from close range after several minutes of the Wallabies pressuring the Fijian line defense to earn a narrow, comeback victory that had appeared unlikely after a stunning Fijian rally.
Wilson's try with less than two minutes remaining saved what would have been a difficult two weeks of reflection for the Wallabies ahead of the series-opening test against the
British and Irish Lions
in Brisbane on July 19.
'Such a tough game,' Wilson said. 'It was awesome to go to battle with you guys. It's always a tough one.'
A spectacular long-range try for Fiji midway through the second half appeared to be enough for the visitors to claim a another famous victory over Australia — the latest being at the 2023 Rugby World Cup — before Wilson's late intervention.
After a frantic start from both teams, the Wallabies found the line through hooker Dave Porecki, playing his first test in almost two years since the 2023 World Cup, when he dived over from the back of a rolling maul in the eighth minute. Noah Lolesio added the conversion.
The best move of the first half — frequently punctuated by stoppages which stifled any match momentum — led to the Wallabies' second try when a sweeping backline move featuring Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaali'i allowed Fraser McReight to score in the corner. Lolesio again converted to stretch the lead to 14-0.
Fullback Salesi Rayasi responded almost immediately for Fiji just before the halftime break, somehow finding space to to wriggle through the defense to score in the corner after his team had counterattacked from an ill-advised chip kick by the Wallabies. The Australians had only needed to maintain possession for a few seconds more to preserve a 14-point margin into the break.
Flyhalf Caleb Muntz missed the conversion from the sideline for a 14-5 half-time score.
A tale of two halves
The Wallabies may have dominated the first half, but it was almost all Fiji in the second.
Muntz added a penalty goal after the break to narrow the margin to six points before the Wallabies had their second try of the match disallowed after the referee spotted a forward pass.
The match was then upended by some vintage Flying Fiji attack.
Jiuta Wainiqolo gained possession after broken play inside Fiji's half, the winger then slalomed his way through four defenders in a weaving run before guiding a looping pass for Lekima Tagitagivalu to score and spark jubilant celebrations by the large number of Fiji supporters at Newcastle.
Muntz converted to give Fiji a 15-14 lead.
The Fijians almost went further ahead, appearing to score another thrilling try down the same right flank but it was overruled by the Television Match Official who found that an Australian player had stepped into touch while in possession in the leadup to the try.
Another Muntz penalty goal extended the lead to four points with 14 minutes remaining, and meant Australia needed to score at least a try for victory.
'Very proud of my brothers,' said Fiji captain Tevita Ikanivere. 'It's a disappointing loss losing in the last minute, but thankful to them for giving their all today to our family and friends, our fans who came out in numbers.'

The battered Wallabies have two weeks to recover before the much-anticipated first test against the Lions.
On Saturday, the Lions maintained their unbeaten record on their Australian tour with a
third straight win
, but delivered their least convincing performance yet against a depleted New South Wales Waratahs lineup missing most of its Wallabies.
The match ended with a hint of controversy, with Lions head coach Andy Farrell suggesting the Allianz Stadium surface had been
intentionally over-watered
by the Waratahs to disrupt his team's style of play.
The Lions have a tour match against Australia's strongest provincial team, the Brumbies, in Canberra on Wednesday.

SION, Switzerland (AP) — Norway winger Caroline Graham Hansen showed Sunday why she was second in the Ballon d'Or vote last year to her superstar Barcelona teammate Aitana Bonmatí. Graham Hansen lifted Norway into the quarterfinals of the Women's European Championships with a decisive late goal in a 2-1 win over an impressive Finland which deserved more. It meant Norway became the first team in the knockout rounds as the winner of Group A after host Switzerland beat Iceland 2-0 in the later game Sunday. In the 84th minute of a tied game, there seemed little danger when Graham Hansen got the ball tight on the right wing marked by two Finland opponents 40 meters (yards) from goal. She dribbled past both players detailed to stop her, darted into the penalty area, met two more defenders, deceived them and created space to float a deft chip that went into the net off the far post. Maybe it was a cross aimed for Norway captain Ada Hegerberg but it still looked great. Hegerberg, a Ballon d'Or winner, put her hands to her head as if in disbelief at what Graham Hansen had done. 'It was a half-shot, half-cross,' Graham Hansen acknowledged. 'If it wasn't going in, it was going to Ada. You have to make something happen out of nothing.' Just three minutes earlier, she had missed a much easier chance to win the game by scooping a shot over the bar when having almost too much time to think and pick her spot. 'You maybe feel like that was the chance that could have secured the victory,' Graham Hansen said. 'But you can't stay in the past.' It left Finland coach Marko Saloranta praising 'a world-class player, among the top three players in the world in my opinion.' It gave Norway a second 2-1 win at Euro 2025 after being outshined for much of the game. Norway had opened Wednesday with a come-from-behind win over Switzerland which had dominated the first half. 'This result was brutal after the performance,' Saloranta said in translated comments. 'We really should have won this match.' Norway moves on Norway now sits atop Group A with six points. Finland is on three, from its opening-day 1-0 win over Iceland, and Switzerland also has three points. Switzerland plays Finland in the final round of Group A games on Thursday. Norway holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over either team if they end tied on six points. Iceland was eliminated Sunday ahead of playing Norway in its last game. Norway has been severely tested at Euro 2025 yet will be in the quarterfinals — likely avoiding Spain. 'It's the quality of a good team that we find a way to win,' Norway coach Gemma Grainger said, noting her side could have been three goals ahead before Finland stepped up. Finland's fightback Norway led in the third minute when Graham Hansen had forced an own-goal from Finland defender Eva Nyström after excellent play on the right wing. Oona Sevenius deservedly leveled for Finland in the 32nd, showing fine balance to direct a rising left-foot shot from 16 yards (meters). Norway was again robbed of the ball in its own half by effective pressing. For all its tidy play, Finland was lucky not to go two goals down. Norway struck the crossbar and a post from back-to-back corners, then Hegerberg was denied by goalkeeper Anna Koivunen's brave blocking save. Cowboys All-Pro KaVontae Turpin arrested on weapon, marijuana charges
Cowboys star KaVontae Turpin was arrested Saturday in Texas on misdemeanor drug and weapon charges, according to online records from the Allen Police Department. Turpin posted a $1,500 bond Sunday and was released from Collin County Jail. Van Gisbergen wins in Chicago once again, completing a NASCAR weekend sweep
CHICAGO (AP) — Shane van Gisbergen completed a sweep on the Chicago Street Course on Sunday, winning the NASCAR Cup Series race on the tricky downtown circuit. It was van Gisbergen's second victory of the season and his third career Cup win. The Trackhouse Racing driver also won in Chicago in 2023, becoming the first driver to take his Cup Series debut since Johnny Rutherford in the second qualifying race at Daytona in 1963. Ty Gibbs was second, and Tyler Reddick finished third. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five. It was a dominant weekend for van Gisbergen, a three-time champion in Australia's Supercars. The 36-year-old New Zealand native won the Xfinity Series race from the pole Saturday. He also was the top qualifier for the Cup race. Michael McDowell joined van Gisbergen on the front row and quickly moved in front. He won Stage 1 and led for 31 laps before he was derailed by a throttle cable issue. Van Gisbergen regained the lead when he passed Chase Briscoe with 16 laps left.
