Day 8 at the Calgary Stampede rodeo: Kassie Mowry recaptures barrel racing record

Just ask Kassie Mowry and fellow barrel racers at the Calgary Stampede.

But again and again and again in the same week?
Article content
And counting.
Article content
'Watching it through the whole week, I was fortunate to be at the end (of Friday's round),' said Mowry moments after posting the fastest barrel-racing run ever — 16.74 seconds — at the Calgary Stampede. 'I could see that the grounds have been just really fast and really consistent. So I was excited.

Article content
'These guys are doing an amazing job with the ground.'

And the racers and their rides are doing an amazing job getting around the cloverleaf.
Article content
Mowry previously held the arena record — at 16.82 — on her way to being crowned Stampede champion in 2022.
Article content
That standard stuck until Day 3 of this year's edition of 'The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth', when it was twice broken — by Oklahoma's Emily Beisel and Idaho's Anita Ellis.
'I was watching, so I knew she did it,' said Mowry, of Ellis setting that time to beat — 16.79 — last Sunday. 'And that's a great horse (Axe) she's got.
Article content
'When she lays one down, it's hard to beat. I knew that.'
Article content
But Mowry did it on the second day of Pool C competition, barrelling around the cloverleaf in a best-ever trip.
Article content
Fellow Texan Hailey Kinsel wasn't far behind with a 16.84 run, also one of the five fastest trips ever at the Stampede. Her runner-up money of $5,500 keeps her in top spot ahead of Mowry's $10,250 heading into Saturday's final day of Pool C. Third on the three-day money-total list from the pool is another Stampede veteran in Oklahoma's Leslie Smalygo, with $8,750.
Article content
Article content
And that in itself is quite the who's-who list of champions here — Smalygo is the reigning queen, Mowry won it in 2022 and Kinsel was the Stampede champ in 2018.
Article content
Article content
Throw in the new threat of Stampede rookie Ellis, who went sub-17 in all three Pool A rounds to win all three days for a whopping $21,000, and Pool B winner Carlee Otero — a hungry veteran at this rodeo — and Showdown Sunday is shaping up to be a darn fine championship day.
Article content
'Yeah … I guess this is just going to be back and forth, and we'll just see how it goes,' added Mowry. 'I feel like the way it's heating up, the record might get broken again before this is over.
Article content
'I feel like my horse gets to show what he's capable of here at Stampede,' added Mowry, continuing to praise the grounds crew in Calgary. 'I love that it showcases all these horses. For them to do that, they love their job and they're trying to work for us. And it makes it so much fun to be on a team with them.'

Calgary Stampede, July 13: Veteran volunteer Showdown Sunday and Rangeland Derby finals set

Sunday is the final day of the 2025 edition of the Calgary Stampede. Article content Showdown Sunday at the rodeo and the final run of the Rangeland Derby chuckwagon races will take place at GMC Stadium. Article content Article content Article content Article content It's been fun to watch the evolution of Alberta artists that set off to conquer Nashville, whether it be Lindsay Ell, Noeline Hofmann or Sykamore. Originally from Medicine Hat, MacKenzie Porter first gained attention as a thespian — she played a teenage Mormon bride for a few seasons on Hell on Wheels — but is mostly focused on country music these days and her star has been on the rise ever since. She signed with Music City powerhouse Big Loud Records back in 2018 as the label's first Canadian artist. Article content Article content Article content Want to feel elderly? Consider the fact that Montreal pop-punk act Simple Plan first bounced onto the scene 23 years ago with appropriately snotty and angsty teenage-outsider skate-punk anthems such as I'm Just a Kid and Welcome to My Life. The band returned to these roots in 2022 for Harder Than It Looks, giving them a 20-year canon of perpetually youthful material to draw from. Article content Article content A horse was injured Saturday night at the Calgary Stampede's Rangeland Derby chuckwagon races. Article content No immediate report was available regarding the horse's condition, but it was loaded onto a trailer as announcer Les McIntyre told the crowd that the horse would get the best care and would hopefully be able to return to racing.

Calgary Wild FC celebrate Stampede in style with much-needed win over Vancouver Rise FC

A gruelling 90-minute battle in the intense prairie heat won't keep the Calgary Wild FC from celebrating a much-needed 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Rise FC at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth Saturday evening. Article content Alberta's first women's professional sports team will be two-stepping into the final weekend of the Calgary Stampede with their Wild Rose supporters, thanks to two first-half tallies at McMahon Stadium that ended a two-game slide in the Northern Super League. Article content Article content 'That was a massive three points for us. Ever since that first game against Vancouver we always felt like we could have come away from games with something,' said Wild FC head coach Lydia Bedford. 'That was no different when we got the draw against them six weeks ago, but it means more today because of the last run of games and what we've been managing as a group.' Article content Article content A banged-up bench reminiscent of the locker room of cowboys after a week of riding at the Stampede rodeo, the home squad put their western spirit on full display, digging deep to overcome a month of adversity ad finish on top of a 2-1 thriller in the Wild West match. Article content 'We got a few players back on the pitch with Ally (Green) and Jaclyn (Sawicki), Mijka (Rolfsema) played last week but out of position, so having her back defending, that confidence from the back line just fed through and gave our players the opportunity to do what they do best,' added Bedford. Article content Article content Arriving to the match in a new pair of cowboy boots, Serita Thurton saddled up for the new rodeo on the pitch and put a golden foot on the game ball 12 minutes into the good ole'-fashioned duel when she chipped a pass from Rolfsema over the head of Rise FC keeper Morgan McAslan and into the net. Article content 'What a relief that was. It means everything to me to get that goal. I've been waiting for it for a while so there is lots of excitement because it was such a big game for us,' said Thurton. 'We really needed that win, especially against Vancouver. To be able to contribute that way is amazing.' Article content Article content It was a long time coming for Thurton who has created endless chances in each of the first 10 matches. Article content 'The coaches and team have been so patient with me, but I had put a lot of pressure on myself to contribute,' added Thurton. 'I can kind of let it all go now getting that first goal.'

Chanse Vigen, Jamie Laboucane, Jason Glass advance to Rangeland Derby championship heat

The championship lineup is set. Article content By virtue of finishing as the top three drivers in the aggregate standings through nine nights of racing at the Rangeland Derby presented by Play Alberta, Chanse Vigen, Jamie Laboucane and Jason Glass advanced to race in the Calgary Stampede's $80,000 Championship Final Heat on Sunday. Article content As the top two drivers all week, Vigen and Laboucane pretty much had their spots locked up heading into Saturday, while Glass still had some work to do to guarantee his position. Article content Article content 'They're both very strong,' said Glass, who came into the night in third spot and held onto it thanks to posting the night's second fastest time of 1:11.90. 'They've got some beautiful horses in the barn and they're both driving fantastic. All the credit in the world to both of those guys.' Article content Article content After finishing third in last year's final heat at the Rangeland Derby, Vigen immediately set his sights on making it back to the Calgary Stampede's championship dash for cash. Article content 'It's the only reason why I'm racing a wagon right now is to try to win this show,' said Vigen in early April just before the start of the Calgary Stampede Canvas Auction. 'It's that simple. It's that black and white. This is why I got into the sport. This is why I'm still in the sport. This is what I'm here for.' Article content Article content It's the fourth trip to the final for Vigen, who also made appearances in 2017 and '18 when Kurt Bensmiller won his third and fourth Rangeland Derby titles. Article content During his quest to win the ultimate wagon racing prize in Calgary, 'The Rangeland Derby Rockstar' has been a sponge for information on how to get better. Article content 'Of course, you never stop learning,' said Vigen, who has won back-to-back World Professional Chuckwagon Association Pro Tour driving titles. 'You'll learn until the day you retire. I've gathered that from people like Kelly Sutherland (the record-holding 12-time Rangeland Derby champion) and Rick Fraser that have had really decorated careers and lengthy careers and they never stopped learning until they were out because horses have a way of tricking you. Article content 'It's a very complicated game that we're playing. It looks very easy when you're just watching it on television or watching it live, but there's a lot of moving parts. You'll never get it figured out. There's no formula, so as far as the learning curve, it never ends.'
