On the lookout for.... a tower?
ON the lookout for a Munster coastal property with heritage, expansive views, and bragging rights galore?
Tiny tower could be a one-bed weekend get-away?
Look no further than Ardmore's historic lookout tower, on 26 acres of dramatic headland and cliffs, abutting the picturesque west Waterford village, ringed by a clifftop path.
'It's a slice of Ardmore magic, situated in one of Ireland's most scenic locations: this property has been admired by thousands over the years and now is your opportunity, subject to planning permission, to recreate and bring back to life,' says estate agent Brian Gleeson, who is selling the farmland and Napoleonic-era tower all-in for €450,000. The cliff walk experience will not be affected.
Lookout tower has 26 acres, with about 17 arable/grazing: the rest is outside the cliff path traveled by hundreds daily
Ardmore's lookout tower was built in the early 1800s to allow watchkeepers to spot approaching French ships during the Napoleonic wars; it's one of dozens along the south coast, each one within sight of the next for signalling, including Martello towers.
A small number have been converted to private residences. The 26 acres include 17 acres of tillage/pasture and nine wilder acres surrounding the cliff path, with one of Munster's top hotels, the Cliff House Hotel, trading on the adjacent headland.

Auctioneer Brian Gleeson says the 220-year-old lookout tower 'would make an ideal, sensitive restoration project, transformed in to a unique micro-accommodation experience, offering a luxury retreat perched above the dramatic coastline'.
With 'careful restoration and minimal modern additions, such as a spiral staircase, rooftop viewing deck, and eco-friendly amenities, the tower could serve as a one-of-a-kind stay for couples or solo travellers seeking privacy, history, and panoramic sea views', he adds, all subject to planning approval.
'This type of experiential tourism aligns with growing demand for distinctive, off-grid destinations and could significantly enhance Ardmore's appeal' says Mr Gleeson.

Ryanair carried record 20.7m passengers in July

Ryanair carried 20.7m passengers last month, a record number for July, despite French air traffic control (ATC) strikes. The Irish carrier said on Tuesday that passenger numbers were up 3% from 20.2m for the equivalent period in 2024. Its load factor - which represents the average proportion of seat filled on its aircraft - was unchanged, at 96%. Ryanair operated over 113,000 flights in July. Some 680 flights were cancelled mainly due to French air traffic controller (ATC) strikes. French ATC staff took industrial action on July 3 and 4 in a dispute over working conditions. The strikes distrupted Irish and European flights to and from French airports, while the walkouts also affected flights scheduled which travelled over French airspace, which meant many more disruptions. European air traffic management body Eurocontrol estimated the strikes affected more than 1m passengers. Ryanair has urged European Commission president Ursula on der Leyen to take urgent action to reform EU ATC services. Earlier this week, Ryanair published its data of Europe's worst-performing ATCs, namechecking France, Spain, Germany, the UK, and Greece and accusing them of inflicting avoidable delays "due to mismanagement and inexcusable under staffing". "Neither the EU Commission nor national transport ministers responsible for these failing ATC services have taken any action to fix Europe's broken ATC services. In stark contrast, Countries like Ireland, Slovakia, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium are delivering Europe's most efficient ATC services, which proves that well-managed, properly staffed ATC is not just possible but is already being delivered by many EU states," said Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary.

Brittany Ferries increasing Rosslare-Cherbourg services as passenger volumes up 40% and freight units double

Brittany Ferries is increasing its presence at Rosslare Europort after confirming on Tuesday it will increase sailings to Cherbourg following Stena Line's decision to leave the service. Brittany Ferries, which is long established in Cork, will increase both capacity and frequency of sailings from Rosslare to the French port from the end of September, with departures rising from five to seven every week. Brittany Ferries launched their Rosslare to Cherbourg service in 2021 in a post-Brexit response to demand from hauliers, to obviate the need to cross the UK-landbridge when moving freight between Ireland and France. Passenger volumes have soared nearly 40% this year while freight units have doubled. Brittany Ferries says the increased service can ensure business continuity for Irish hauliers, as well as offering more choice to holidaymakers. 'News that our competitor was stepping back, started the firing pistol in a concerted effort to secure port slots and better serve customers in Ireland and France," said Brittany Ferries chief executive Christophe Mathieu. 'It means greater choice for holidaymakers and even more opportunity for freight operators seeking to by-pass the UK entirely, cutting down on bureaucracy and delays at the UK border. Our new train connection in Cherbourg only adds further strings to the multimodal bow.' The company's first train is being rolled out, which will utilise rail line links from Cherbourg and Bayonne, carrying unaccompanied trailers over 970km of the French rail network. Glenn Carr, director of commercial business units for Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail-Port Authority for Rosslare Europort said since Brexit, direct sailings between Rosslare Europort and the European continent have increased six-fold. "Our priority has been to ensure we maintain that capacity and choice for industry and tourism alike." Stena announced its decision to withdraw its existing three-day Rosslare-Cherbourg service after "an extensive review" with the intention of strengthening the company's investment in the Irish Sea, where it said it will strengthen its Irish Sea network. "We have recently announced investments of almost £40m in our Liverpool and Belfast terminals, as well as the upgrading of the Fishguard port infrastructure. We will also be increasing capacity across the Irish Sea with two new freight vessels planned for the Belfast–Heysham route and an additional freight vessel for the Dublin–Liverpool route," said Stena trade director Johan Edelman.
