Memories of Emergency need to be kept alive so that nobody ever dares to impose dictatorship: Amit Shah
'Today, we are gathered here to remember a dark chapter in the post-Independence history of India. We must keep the memories of the Emergency alive so that it is never repeated, and so that the youth of the nation grow up in a culture that resists such tendencies,' Shah said.
As part of the event, Shah released a book titled The Emergency Diaries: Years That Forged a Leader. The book draws on first-person accounts from individuals who worked closely with a young Narendra Modi during the Emergency, alongside archival material. It offers a new perspective on the formative years of the Prime Minister, illustrating his early commitment to democratic ideals.

Padayatras necessary even when in power: Mahesh Goud
Hyderabad Congress is on the course to correct the 10-year 'misrule' of BRS, but will seek people's support based on its welfare and developmental programmes, said Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud. Mr. Goud's ongoing Janahita padayatra entered Andole in Sangareddy district on Friday, where he was welcomed by Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and joined by Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and G. Vivek apart from senior leader Jagga Reddy. Mr. Goud said that padayatras were essential even when in power, as they provide a direct opportunity to engage with the public and understand their needs. He credited the people for electing Revanth Reddy as the Chief Minister and noted that conversations during the padayatra will help in conveying the voices of the people directly to the CM. Taking a dig at BRS rule, Mr Goud said people lost everything in 10 years while the KCR family gained and benefited beyond imagination. Families of Telangana martyrs were denied even a single job, he said while the Congress government provided over 65,000 jobs in just 11 months. Another 35,000 vacancies would be filled soon. Targeting BRS leader Harish Rao, he blamed him for the Banakacherla project and clarified that the project only progressed after KCR's lenience and support to the previous AP government. Telangana will reclaim its water rights under CM Revanth Reddy, he said. Criticising BRS MLC K Kavitha, he said it's ironic that she doesn't even seem to know which party she belongs to but was attemtpting to take claim for BC reservations enhanced to 42% by the Congress government. 'When the Congress was fighting for 42% reservations for BCs, Kavitha was in jail.' He said the Congress government has already fulfilled its commitment to implement the six guarantees and provided 42% reservations to BCs, keeping its word to people.

Smithsonian museum removes Trump impeachment references: report
The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History removed a label referencing Donald Trump's two impeachments last month following pressure from the White House, The Washington Post reported. Mr. Trump is the only American President to have been impeached twice — first in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, then in 2021 for inciting an insurrection. He was acquitted by the Senate both times. The label referencing his impeachments was introduced in 2021 to an exhibition about the American presidency at the Smithsonian, according to The Washington Post. The removal of the label "came about as part of a content review that the Smithsonian agreed to undertake following pressure from the White House to remove an art museum director," the Post wrote, citing a source not authorised to discuss the matter publicly. The exhibit has reverted to a 2008 label stating that "only three Presidents have seriously faced removal" — referring to Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Richard Nixon, who resigned in 1974 before he could be impeached. The Smithsonian later said in a statement that "a future and updated exhibit will include all impeachments," the paper reported, without specifying when. Since starting his second term in January, the Republican President has moved to control major cultural institutions — slashing arts and humanities funding, and cutting the National Park Service's budget. In March, Mr. Trump signed an executive order to "restore the Smithsonian Institution to its rightful place as a symbol of inspiration and American greatness" and "remove improper ideology." The order accused the institution of having "come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology" and argued the shift has promoted narratives that portray American values as "inherently harmful and oppressive." In the order, Mr. Trump instructed Vice-President J.D. Vance — who sits on the Smithsonian's board — to coordinate with Congress to ban funding for exhibits or programs that "degrade shared American values, divide Americans by race, or promote ideologies inconsistent with Federal law." He has also accused Washington's John F. Kennedy Center of being too "woke," fired its board members, and appointed himself chairman.
