Photo: LU HANXIN A defeat to world number nine Japan saw the New Zealand women's basketball team miss out on a semi-final spot at the 2025 FIBA Women's Asia Cup in Shenzhen, China. New Zealand lost 77-62, despite an encouraging performance in the first half, which saw them in the lead 41-39 at the major break. Captain Esra McGoldrick was a powerhouse during the first half, scoring 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Youngster Bailey Flavell capped off the half in style - hanging in the air for what seemed to last an eternity before flipping up a tough lay-in, just moments before sinking a clutch mid-range runner at the buzzer to give the Tall Ferns a well-earned two-point halftime lead. Japan emerged a different team in the third quarter, as guards Kokoro Tanaka and Noriko Konno took control at the offensive end, while the Tall Ferns struggled to crack some tough defense. Japan ended up outscoring New Zealand 22-8 in the third quarter, and when they went on a 7-0 run to start the final quarter to increase their lead to 19 points, the margin ended up being too big for the Tall Ferns to overhaul. McGoldrick, finishing the game with 28 points and 12 rebounds, continued to battle hard, scoring five straight points to try and spark her teammates, before assisting a McKenna Dale three-pointer that briefly cut the lead to 10. But another Japanese surge halted any hopes of a comeback, as they closed out the game to advance to the semi-final against hosts China. The result left coach Nat Hurst in a reflective mood. "First 20 minutes we're pretty happy with. We wanted to fix a couple of things at halftime and I just think we came out in the third quarter and the game got a little bit away from us. But we were able to get back to what looked like us in the fourth, so happy about the bounce-back. "The fight that the girls show every game, every minute to prep themselves for this, all that kind of stuff… to continue to fight for 40 minutes when things were down, just super proud to head coach this team." New Zealand's final match of the tournament will be against the Philippines later on Saturday, with the winner finishing in fifth in the eight-team event. Football: All Whites' Liberato Cacace confirms move to Wrexham

The North Wales club have confirmed the signing of the New Zealand international from Italian club Empoli for an undisclosed fee, pending Visa approval, registrations and international clearance. The 24-year-old left-back is joining Wrexham on a three-year deal, until the end of the 2027/28 season. He made 76 for Empoli appearances across three seasons in Serie A, and has played 33 games for New Zealand. "I'm absolutely delighted to sign for this historic club, and I just can't wait to get started," Cacace said in a statement on Wrexham's official website. "Looking from the outside, what they are creating here is something I want to be part of. The family they have here - it's a tight-knit club and that enticed me. "I had a great phone call with the manager, and after that I really wanted to sign." Cacace began his professional career with the Wellington Phoenix, where he became the youngest player in their history to reach 50 appearances. Two standout seasons with Phoenix earnt him the move to Europe, where he initially signed for Belgian side Sint-Truidense V.V. in 2020, before moving to Italy. On his signing, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "We are delighted to welcome Libby to Wrexham and look forward to integrating him with the squad on our return home." Wrexham are confidentially in Wellington today, where they play the Phoenix in a pre-season friendly. Black Caps stay unbeaten in T20 Tri-Series with win over Zimbabwe

Photo: MICHAEL BRADLEY The Black Caps have remained unbeaten in cricket's T20 Tri-Series, being played in Harare, Zimbabwe. They've beaten the hosts by eight wickets to secure their second straight win and move to the top of the table, ahead of the Zimbabweans and South Africa. After winning the toss and sending Zimbabwe into bat, the Black Caps initially found getting breakthroughs tough, with openers Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett scoring 36 in the first five overs. But after fast bowler Matt Henry claimed Bennett's wicket with the second ball of the sixth over, New Zealand started to get on top. Henry, in particular, ended up shining, taking two more wickets, as he finished the best of the bowlers with three for 26 off his four overs. Adam Milne, captain Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell and Rachin Ravindra claimed a wicket each, as they restricted Zimbabwe to just 120 for seven off their 20 overs. And while New Zealand lost opener Tim Seifert early in their chase for just three, a solid partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra ensued to set up the victory. Conway ended up scoring an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls, while Ravindra's 30 came from just 19 balls. Daryl Mitchell helped seal the win with an unbeaten 26, as New Zealand finished 122 for two, easily chasing down the target with 39 balls to spare, with Conway named player of the match. "It was nice again to contribute today to the win," Conway said. "It's always nice to be one of those guys who stands out and puts their hands up and perform for the boys," he said. Meanwhile, all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the rest of the series and the upcoming two-test series against Zimbabwe, due to a groin injury. New Zealand Cricket said Phillips suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket final in Dallas and needs "a number of weeks" to recover. The Black Caps are already without batter Finn Allen, who was ruled out of the Tri-Series with a foot injury suffered in the MLC. "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre," head coach Rob Walter said. "Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. "We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens." Phillips' replacement in the test squad will be named later, the NZC added.
