Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government has refuted claims by Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong regarding the re-approval of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Esteel Enterprise Sabah Sdn Bhd jetty project at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip). Political Secretary to the Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, Chan Loong Wei, said the allegations were unfounded and reflected a lack of understanding of standard investment procedures.
Advertisement He said reviewing and updating a previously approved EIA is a normal requirement for major infrastructure projects, especially when there are changes in the original design. 'In this case, the revised EIA report was approved by the Sabah Environmental Protection Department (JPAS) in May 2025, following modifications to the jetty design that differed from the version approved in early 2024,' he said in a statement, Tuesday. Chan stressed that the approval process followed legal procedures and standard coordination protocols, denying any ministerial interference as alleged by the opposition representative. He also urged the opposition to refrain from politicising strategic investments, warning that negative narratives could damage investor confidence in Sabah as a stable and business-friendly destination. Russian air defences destroy Ukrainian drone headed for Moscow, mayor says
(Reuters) -Russian air defences destroyed two Ukrainian drones headed for Moscow late on Thursday, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. TAWAU: Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong again urged the Government to stop construction of traffic roundabouts along Jalan Sin Onn. He said the plan to build two roundabouts was shortsighted and dismissive of public opinion. Advertisement 'This project risks worsening traffic congestion and contradicts the principle of putting people first,' he said, adding it failed to consider the long-term interests of the community. Wong, instead, called for Jalan Sin Onn to be upgraded into a dual carriageway, which he said would bring genuine long-term development to the area and surrounding neighbourhoods. 'I appeal to the Ministry of Finance to reconsider and upgrade the road to a dual carriageway,' he said, questioning why that option was not chosen. He said the project appears one-sided and short-term in nature, potentially slowing down traffic flow in key areas such as Pasar Sin On, nearby residential zones, supermarkets and commercial lots. He also raised safety concerns, pointing out that one of the roundabouts is being built next to SJK (C) Hing Hwa, which could pose risks to schoolchildren and parents. According to Wong, the project received objections from more than 7,000 Tawau residents who signed a petition launched in March. The signatures were collected over three weeks and submitted to the State Government and Public Works Department (JKR), but the project still went ahead. 'I even held discussions with JKR, but they couldn't guarantee that traffic would improve after the roundabouts are built. Nor could they confirm whether the risk of accidents would increase,' he said. The roundabouts are part of the Whiterose City development project, approved by JKR on April 29, 2022. Ewon urges Sabah youth to embrace sports

Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick emphasised that the value of organising sports competitions not only unearths new talents but also plays a crucial role in fostering unity, teamwork and friendship among the people. Officiating the 2025 National Boxing Championship at the Sabah Cultural Centre in Penampang, Ewon highlighted how sports provide a platform to promote healthy competition, enhance understanding, build camaraderie and strengthen national unity.
