Robust consumer spending and diversified retail channels drive UAE and Saudi Arabia's economic momentum
UAE market is fragmented between affordable and premium brands, while KSA market is skewed towards mainstream brands with the value players picking up
UAE/KSA, June 2025: The Middle East continues to distinguish itself as a global economic outperformer, with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia leading the charge. While global GDP growth is projected at 3.2% in 2025, the UAE is expected to grow by 4.0% and Saudi Arabia by 3.0%, with further acceleration anticipated through 2027. Consumers across these regions continue to demonstrate strong resilience amid ongoing challenges.
This robust performance is underpinned by strategic international partnerships, balancing ties with both BRICS and Western economies, alongside targeted investments in digital transformation and a young, digitally connected population.
Consumer Markets Show Resilience Amid Economic Transition:
Consumer spending remains strong across both markets, though increasingly value-driven. In the UAE, spending on Tech & Durables (T&D) from April 2024 to March 2025 reached $5.3 billion, marking a 2% year-over-year increase. Key growth categories include Smartphones, Media Tablets, Vacuum Cleaners, and Headsets.
The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector in the UAE also saw a 7% increase, driven by rising demand for Snacking, Beverages, Dairy, and Frozen Foods, with Personal Care spending up 6%.
In Saudi Arabia, growth was more moderate but steady: FMCG rose by 3.3%, and T&D by 0.2%. Notable category gains include Petcare (+10%) and Snacking (+9%), reflecting evolving lifestyle priorities, while Paper Products and Home Care saw declines.
Retail Channels Evolve: Value and E-Commerce Gain Ground:
Retail dynamics are shifting rapidly. In the UAE, Traditional Trade Channels outpaced Organised Retail, with FMCG growth of 10% versus 3.2%, while T&D saw balanced growth across both.
E-commerce continues to expand its footprint. In the UAE, it now accounts for 30% of T&D and 11% of FMCG sales, up from 9% a year ago. In Saudi Arabia, online sales are also rising, with a 7.7% increase in T&D and a 1.4 percentage point gain in FMCG e-commerce share.
'The economic momentum we're witnessing across the Middle East, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, is a testament to the region's strategic vision and adaptability,' says Andrey Dvoychenkov, General Manager, NielsenIQ APP.
'Consumers today are more empowered, informed, and value-driven than ever before. We're seeing strong growth in both premium and value segments, and a rapid evolution in retail channels—especially online. For brands, success hinges on relevance, agility, and a deep understanding of consumer expectations.'
Brand Competition Intensifies in a Crowded Marketplace:
The region's economic promise is attracting a surge of global brands. In the FMCG sector, Saudi Arabia now hosts over 10.500 active brands (up 5% YoY), while the UAE features 13,000 brands (up 6%). SKU counts are also rising, with 130,000 SKUs in the UAE and nearly 100,000 in Saudi Arabia.
The T&D sector is similarly competitive; the number of active brands has seen great increase with 18% and 21% respectively in UAE and KSA. SKUs have also seen more than 50% growth across both markets. This creates a vibrant but crowded landscape, requiring sharper brand strategies and deeper consumer insights.
Premium vs. Value: The Rise of the Strategic Shopper:
Middle Eastern consumers are increasingly discerning, balancing premium aspirations with value-driven choices. Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia recorded double-digit growth in premium and value FMCG segments, highlighting a bifurcated market.
In T&D, value segments grew 6% in KSA and 3% in the UAE, despite the category's premium lean. This underscores two key trends: the rise of price-conscious decision-making and the growing availability of competitive alternatives.
As the Middle East continues its upward trajectory, global brands are positioning themselves to seize the opportunity. But success will depend on a nuanced understanding of the region's evolving consumer landscape—from digital trust and pricing sensitivity to channel dynamics and assortment strategy.

Egypt Highlights Commitment to BRICS Cooperation at 17th Academic Forum in Brasília

Ahmed Emam Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening research cooperation and partnerships within the BRICS group, participating actively in the 17th BRICS Academic Forum (FABRICS) held in Brasília, Brazil, on the sidelines of preparations for the upcoming Rio de Janeiro Summit. Representing Egypt at the event, the Cabinet's Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) joined two days of discussions spanning six key themes: health cooperation among BRICS nations, AI governance, trade, investment and finance, climate change, multilateral peace and security, and institutional development. The forum concluded with an official session summarizing outcomes and future recommendations. In his opening address, Dr. Osama El-Gohary, Assistant to the Prime Minister and Head of IDSC, underscored Egypt's determination to deepen research collaboration and support South-South partnerships. He emphasized the importance of knowledge exchange and academic dialogue in priority areas for BRICS countries. El-Gohary also outlined Egypt's efforts and initiatives across the forum's key discussion areas, highlighting how the country aims to leverage BRICS cooperation to further its national development goals. A key highlight was Egypt's establishment of a dedicated 'BRICS Unit' under the Cabinet, designed to coordinate strategies across government ministries, relevant agencies, and the private sector, accelerating Egypt's integration into BRICS frameworks. Egypt presented strategic directions aimed at enhancing its role in trade, investment, and finance, aligning with the targets of Egypt's Vision 2030. Discussions also tackled the opportunities and challenges of using local currencies in intra-BRICS trade, as well as innovative digital and financial tools to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Participants spotlighted prospects for cooperation in sustainable supply chains and sustainable trade, stressing the importance of aligning trade policies with climate commitments without compromising developmental priorities in the Global South. On the sidelines of the forum, IDSC engaged in a special session with the BRICS Think Tank Network for Finance (BTTNF), focusing on two joint research studies planned for this year. The first study will examine 'Credit Ratings and Development Finance among BRICS Countries: International Context and Egypt's Case Study,' while the second will explore 'Innovative Climate Finance Instruments.' During the closing session, El-Gohary emphasized the need to translate the forum's outcomes into practical policies that benefit Global South nations. The forum concluded with the launch of a preliminary report on cooperation mechanisms within BRICS, identifying over 180 cooperation frameworks among member states. The report reflects the commitment of BRICS nations—including Egypt—to promoting transparency and facilitating data exchange among national institutions. Notably, Egypt is participating in multiple cooperation initiatives across ten critical sectors, including agriculture, energy, education, economy, science, culture, labor, security, and social development, signaling the country's growing integration into BRICS institutional structures. Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly has instructed the technical secretariat of the BRICS Unit to translate the report into Arabic and coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies to ensure Egypt maximizes the benefits of BRICS cooperation mechanisms. It is worth mentioning that IDSC recently joined the BRICS Think Tank Council (BTTC) and became an official member of the BRICS Think Tank Network for Finance (BTTNF) in 2024. This year marks Egypt's first participation in the annual academic forum, which traditionally precedes the BRICS Leaders' Summit and aims to deliver strategic recommendations for policymakers across the bloc. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

SPIEF 2025 deepens Egypt-Russia strategic partnership - Economy

Russia underscored its deepening strategic partnership with Egypt during the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025), highlighting their ongoing cooperation as a cornerstone of Moscow's engagement with the Arab world. Since Egypt's designation as the forum's guest country in 2022, bilateral relations between both nations have expanded significantly across energy, infrastructure, investment, and education. This marked Cairo as a key partner in Russia's vision for a balanced and multipolar global economy. "The collaboration with Egypt continues to serve as a model for regional cooperation rooted in mutual respect and shared interests," Anton Kobyakov, advisor to the president of the Russian Federation and executive secretary of the SPIEF organizing committee, said at the forum's final press conference. He emphasized that Russia remains committed to fostering ties with Arab states — including Bahrain, the 2025 guest country, and Saudi Arabia, which will hold the role in 2026 — as part of its broader strategy to enhance connectivity across the Global South. Kobyakov also praised Egypt's pivotal role in building consensus on economic sovereignty and its contributions to joint initiatives launched during and after its guest country status. 'Egypt has proven to be a reliable and visionary partner,' he noted. 'Our cooperation reflects the core values of SPIEF—shared growth, balanced dialogue, and regional inclusion.' This year's forum, held under the theme 'Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World,' brought together global stakeholders committed to forging new paths of economic cooperation independent of unilateral Western influence. Organized by the Roscongress Foundation, SPIEF 2025 reinforced its reputation as the premier annual platform for international economic policy discussions. Kobyakov reported that 1,060 agreements were signed during the forum, totaling 6.3 trillion rubles (approximately $83 billion). The programme included 350 official sessions, 24 high-level bilateral economic dialogues, 30 sports events, and 18 cultural competitions, demonstrating the forum's comprehensive nature as both a diplomatic and socio-economic platform. With participants from 140 countries and regions, SPIEF 2025 featured the presence of heads of state, ministers, multinational business executives, sovereign wealth funds, and representatives from over 220 educational institutions. The international youth initiative, 'Friends of Leadership,' drew participants from over 60 countries, working alongside UN-affiliated organizations to shape the next generation's perspectives on global governance. Kobyakov announced that St. Petersburg will host a new International Transport and Logistics Forum in 2026, reinforcing Russia's focus on securing resilient and autonomous global trade networks. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of emerging technologies and regional cooperation frameworks, particularly BRICS and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), in adapting to a shifting geopolitical landscape. 'The future of global trade lies in the rise of self-reliant macro-regions,' Kobyakov said. 'Those with production, energy, and food security—anchored in political sovereignty—will be best positioned to navigate global instability,' he concluded. China hosts Iranian, Russian defence ministers against backdrop of 'momentous change' - International

China hosted defence ministers from Iran and Russia for a meeting in its eastern seaside city of Qingdao on Thursday against the backdrop of war in the Middle East and a summit of NATO countries in Europe that agreed to boost military spending. Beijing has long sought to present the 10-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a counterweight to Western-led power blocs and has pushed to strengthen collaboration between its member countries in politics, security, trade and science. The Qingdao meeting of the organisation's top defence officials comes as a fledgling ceasefire between Israel and Iran holds after 12 days of fighting between the arch-foes. It is also being held the day after a summit of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders in The Hague, where members agreed to ramp up their defence spending to satisfy US President Donald Trump. Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun framed Thursday's meeting of officials in Qingdao, home to a major Chinese naval base, as a counterweight to a world in "chaos and instability". "As momentous changes of the century accelerate, unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise," Dong said as he welcomed defence chiefs from Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Belarus and elsewhere on Wednesday, according to state news agency Xinhua. "Hegemonic, domineering and bullying acts severely undermine the international order," he warned. He urged his counterparts to "take more robust actions to jointly safeguard the environment for peaceful development". India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, also in attendance in Qingdao, said SCO members should "collectively aspire to fulfil the aspirations and expectations of our people as well as tackle today's challenges". "The world we live in is undergoing a drastic transformation. Globalisation, which once brought us closer together, has been losing momentum," he said in comments posted by his office on X. And meeting Dong on the sidelines of the summit, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov hailed ties between the two countries as being "at an unprecedentedly high level". "Friendly relations between our countries maintain upward dynamics of development in all directions," he said. China has portrayed itself as a neutral party in Russia's war with Ukraine, although Western governments say its close ties have given Moscow crucial economic and diplomatic support.
