The Hindu02-06-2025
Members of the State Federation of Women Survivors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking have appealed to the government to provide compensation, healthcare, and education support for their children.
The federation urged the government to implement community-based rehabilitation programs and extend welfare schemes to support their reintegration into society. According to Apoorva, President of the NGO Vimukthi, which fights for the rights of trafficked survivors in the State, there are about 1.33 lakh sex workers and survivors of trafficking in Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking at a programme held on International Sex Workers' Rights Day on Monday, Vimukthi executive committee member, Shanti, expressed concern over the poor implementation of government orders intended to protect the rights of sex workers and their families.
Ms. Apoorva asked the government to facilitate the formation of self-help groups (SHGs) among the survivors and provide access to loans for them through the APSACS, DRDA, and MEPMA and create opportunities for alternative livelihoods.
The programme was attended by HELP, secretary Ram Mohan Nimmaraju, programme manager Bhaskar, Vimukthi project manager Pavan Kumar and others.

Ex-MLC Apoorva Hiray joins BJP, day after 2cr fraud case

Nashik: Former MLC Apoorva Hiray joined BJP on Wednesday, a day after an alleged Rs 1.90-crore loan fraud case was filed against him, his brother Advay Hiray of Sena (UBT), and their father Prashant Hiray, the former minister of state. In the complaint filed by a teacher, Hirays, who run an educational institution and cooperative bank, have been accused of taking a loan in the names of 24 staff members for personal gain. Advay had quit BJP and joined Sena (UBT) last Jan. Advay was then arrested in a loan default case involving Nashik District Central Cooperative Bank, and the Bombay HC on Aug 12, 2024, granted him a bail in the case. On the complaint of the teacher, the Malegaon police registered an FIR for offences punishable under sections 314 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 316 (criminal breach of trust), 318 (cheating), 336 (forgery) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) among other BNS sections against the Hirays. Apoorva, including Anil Madnaik of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, joined BJP in Mumbai in the presence of party state president Ravindra Chavan. The complainant, a substitute teacher in a school run by Mahatma Gandhi Vidyamandir, stated in the complaint that Apoorva, his brother and father took loans of Rs 1.9 crore in the names of 24 teachers and non-teaching staff of Vidyamandir, which is under their complete control. The cooperative bank is also under their control, said the complainant. The teacher alleged that the loans were taken either with forced consent or by forging signatures between Oct 2020 and Nov 2021. The teacher alleged that he discovered a suspicious loan in his name in Nov 2024 while checking details of a Rs 7 lakh loan he took in 2022. He found an additional Rs 14 lakh loan account in his name from 2018, without his knowledge. Enquiries revealed that associates of the Hiray family withdrew the funds, which were settled in Jan 2025. Further probe uncovered 24 similar loan accounts, with funds transferred to the educational society's account, prompting police investigation. Apoorva said, "All the loans were settled more than six months to a year back. If the people concerned had complaints about the same, they should have filed complaints when the loans were still not repaid. The decision to register a case against me by my opponents is only from the fear that I am entering BJP."

VIMUKTHI urges Andhra Pradesh government to implement pending welfare schemes for sex workers

VIJAYAWADA: Marking International Sex Workers' Rights Day, VIMUKTHI—the State Federation of Women Survivors of Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking—called on the State government to urgently implement long-pending rehabilitation and welfare measures for over 1.33 lakh sex workers and survivors. At a State-level meeting held in Vijayawada, VIMUKTHI President Apoorva cited Ministry of Health data stating Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of women engaged in sex work, affecting nearly 2.25 lakh family members. APSACS data from 2022 shows over 40,000 sex workers in the State are above 40 and unable to exit the profession due to lack of alternative livelihoods. Executive Committee Member Shanti criticised the non-implementation of crucial policies, including once hailed as a pioneering anti-trafficking framework during the tenure of then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. She noted that policies such as (interim relief) and (compensation) have also been ignored. Between 2016 and 2022, 2,460 survivors were rescued, yet 90% received no support. RTI data revealed only 592 of 2,737 survivors in shelter homes received services. Of the Rs 12 crore allocated for compensation, less than Rs 20 lakh has been used. VIMUKTHI demanded a shift to community-based rehabilitation.
