‘I've been known to eat a punnet in one sitting': eight superfans on the best ways to enjoy British strawberries

The Guardiana day ago
Conjuring visions of sunny days at Wimbledon, decadent desserts and wholesome homemade jams, British strawberries simply can't be beaten when summer rolls around. No wonder they were among Ocado's bestselling products last summer and, as these shoppers can attest, they're reclaiming their starring role this year …
'When Ocado strawberries are in season, you know it's summer. I love them because they're always perfectly round and sweet, and the beautiful red colour always looks so appetising. My favourite way to eat them is to make my favourite dessert, which is Eton mess. Delicious!'
'I always buy Ocado strawberries – as a family of five, we receive two Ocado deliveries a week and I order four boxes of strawberries in each as we all want to enjoy them. My local fruit shop is fab, but I prefer Ocado strawberries because they're so sweet, a good size and great value. I love them for snacking on, and my son's very healthy so, post-gym, he enjoys grazing on them rather than being tempted by more processed snacks. That way they help him meet his fitness goals. We all nibble from the fridge and I put them in fruit bowls for dessert. They're so sweet, you can enjoy them just on their own.'
'We buy Ocado strawberries regularly – they're firm but sweet and always fresh. Although I shop at a range of supermarkets, I have to buy strawberries from Ocado because I like knowing I can trust their quality. If I'm making something for guests or a special occasion, I know they can be relied on. At home, we enjoy them for a healthy snack after school and in smoothies. The strawberries are so good, they can disappear in minutes, courtesy of my four children!'
'Like most of its products, Ocado's strawberries are often better quality than most other supermarkets – especially now, when best-before dates have been removed from a lot of fresh produce. I mainly buy strawberries because my children love them, and they make for a great snack or dessert that's high in vitamin C. My kids also like to use them to decorate waffles and pancakes, which is an easy way to involve them with preparing their own food, teach them about nutrition and to avoid unhealthy sugary snacks. With picky eaters like mine, it works better if the strawberries look and taste great, which is why Ocado's consistent quality matters.'
'I try to buy seasonal fruit and veg so I always go for Ocado strawberries at this time of year – they taste so delicious right now. I use them for breakfast, to make smoothies or to top a bowl of yoghurt and homemade granola. We also like to take them on picnics, and I give them to my son with kefir yoghurt for a healthier pudding.'
'I'm a private chef who specialises in healthy cooking, so strawberries are a daily essential for me – and of course, they're even better when they're in season. I've been an Ocado shopper for two decades, and I find the big punnet of strawberries great value, especially when you compare it with other brands. They also last really well if treated gently. Both my clients and I love huge, mixed-fruit and yoghurt bowls dotted with a variety of nuts and seeds and a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa nibs. Strawberries are also essential for plopping into prosecco and summer cocktails, so I bring them to lots of park picnics. Recently, I've even been experimenting with dehydrated strawberries at home, to make chewy snacks.'
'I absolutely love using Ocado, especially to help keep my fridge stocked up with strawberries. When you have a two-year-old, you have to keep the berries coming. Ocado strawberries are always fresh, sweet and last well, which is a must in this house. I use them in all sorts of ways, but I especially love them sliced over Greek yoghurt and drizzled with honey. They pair perfectly with my homemade gluten-free banana pancakes, which is my daughter's favourite breakfast. And for me, it has got to be Ocado strawberries with a lovely cold glass of champagne. Whether it's for everyday snacks, weekend brunches or something a little more indulgent, they are a staple in my kitchen.'
'Ocado's strawberries are amazing quality – really plump, flavoursome and juicy. I've been known to eat my way through a punnet in one sitting, because they're so moreish. Usually, though, I'll have them sliced on to crepes or as part of a traditional fruit salad, which is one of my favourite desserts – it's so refreshing, especially at this time of year.'

The Quiet Bloom: How British Gardens Are Growing Greener

The British garden has always been a reflection of its time. From the stately formality of Edwardian herbaceous borders to the clipped neatness of suburban lawns, our outdoor spaces have long mirrored social rhythms and aesthetic ideals. But as climate anxiety weaves itself into daily life, another transformation is quietly taking root. Across the country, homeowners and designers alike are reimagining what a beautiful garden looks like and what it should stand for. At the heart of this movement is a growing desire to protect the environment not by looking outward, but by starting close to home. Increasingly, the modern British garden is becoming a microcosm of ecological responsibility: wilder, more resilient, and deeply personal. Photo by Thomas Verbruggen on Unsplash The Garden as Sanctuary and Statement For many, sustainability has ceased to be a trend and become a quiet, enduring principle. Gone are the days of thirsty lawns and imported blooms. Instead, native planting schemes, water-wise layouts and biodiversity-enhancing features are being favoured, not just by professionals but by the clients who commission them. 'We've noticed a real shift in tone,' explains Craig Nester, Director of Habitat Landscapes, a Bedfordshire-based company known for its luxury garden builds. 'Our clients still want beautiful, aspirational spaces but they also want to feel like they're giving something back. The gardens we're creating now are as much about pollinators, low-impact materials and wild areas as they are about entertaining or relaxing.' Their recent projects feature everything from meadow-inspired planting pockets to oak-framed pergolas that support native climbers, proving that eco-consciousness needn't compromise elegance. Living Roofs and the Rise of Green Infrastructure It's not only the ground that's going green. In fact, one of the more unexpected shifts is happening overhead. Northwest Garage Door Spares, a company typically associated with garage automation, has noted a steady increase in requests for consultations on converting flat garage roofs into living roofs. 'It's not something we would have predicted even five years ago,' their operations manager shares. 'But now, customers are asking whether their existing garage roofs can support sedum or wildflower layers. It's part aesthetic, part environmental, and it really makes use of previously ignored space.' These living roofs do more than soften hard structures. They also provide natural insulation, reduce stormwater runoff and support insects and birds, all from an architectural element that was once purely functional. The Lawn, Reimagined The traditional lawn, long a British hallmark, is being re-examined with fresh eyes. Water usage, maintenance and biodiversity concerns have led many to seek alternatives, with a surprisingly pragmatic solution leading the way. 'We're fitting a lot more blended turf systems,' says a spokesperson from Bolton Turf, which supplies and installs both artificial and natural turf across Bedfordshire. 'For some clients, it's still about the clean, green aesthetic, but increasingly they're mixing natural wild edges with low-maintenance artificial centres especially in family gardens. It reduces water use while still giving them a place to sit or for kids to play.' The result is a kind of modern compromise. Instead of rigid perfection or complete wilderness, today's gardens reflect layered priorities visual clarity, environmental care and everyday usability. The Numbers Behind the Movement It's not just designers and installers noticing the trend. The financial side of the industry paints a similar picture. According to Towerstone Accountants, who work with numerous landscape gardening firms across the UK, recent expenditure patterns tell their own story. 'What we've seen is a marked increase in spend on eco-friendly materials, such as reclaimed timber, permeable paving and solar-powered features,' one of their senior advisors explains. 'There's also a move toward designing multifunctional outdoor living spaces not just decorative gardens. We've even seen clients categorising elements like greenhouses and covered outdoor kitchens as capital investments, which shows how homeowners are viewing gardens as permanent lifestyle upgrades.' This shift suggests that sustainability isn't just an ethical choice, it's being baked into how people plan, spend and live right down to their tax filings. A New Language of Growth In the digital world, this mindset is also being reflected in how landscapers and designers present themselves. 'There's been a noticeable change in the messaging,' says a strategist at Lillian Purge, a marketing firm that supports brands with SEO, content and advertising campaigns. 'Garden designers are expressing their eco-credentials more intentionally now whether that's on their websites, in blog content or across paid search campaigns. Terms like 'rewilding', 'climate-resilient planting' and 'low-carbon design' are being used not just as buzzwords, but as core identity markers.' This storytelling is crucial. In a space where visuals often dominate, the written word is helping shape the values behind the image. Lillian Purge points out that search data reflects rising interest in these terms, indicating that clients aren't just buying what they see, they're actively researching the environmental narrative behind each design. Seasonal Beauty, Built to Last What unites these various threads is a deeper respect for seasonality and natural rhythm. Today's gardens embrace imperfection, softness and change. Grasses are left to sway, seed heads are allowed to linger into winter, and hedgerows bloom wildly rather than bowing to the secateurs. One designer from a recent Habitat Landscapes project captured the sentiment neatly: 'There's beauty in letting go a little. You can still guide the space, shape it but you don't have to dominate it. That's where modern elegance lives now.' From the mossy roofs of repurposed garages to the hum of bees in a pollinator border, the UK garden is being reimagined not just as a sanctuary for people, but for the planet too. It is thoughtful, layered and responsive. And as it continues to grow, it quietly reminds us that change, when rooted in care, can still be beautiful. Like this: Like Related

The supermarket's in-house fashion label Tu is one of the best-loved brands on the high street, and is constantly wowing us with its stylish but affordable fashion. The on-trend buys won't be available to buy until August, but a member of the Tu team has already given shoppers an exciting preview. Hannah Pountain, Director of Merchandising at Tu Clothing, revealed her top five picks from the new range in an Instagram video over the weekend. And she rounded up her five top picks from the new range - including a staple buy which proves a classic 1920s trend is returning. Argyle knitwear has since seen spikes in popularity over the years, and is a golf-core staple. But it looks to return for AW25 with the likes of Miu Miu favouring the cosy print this year. Showing off Tu's answer to the knitwear, Hannah said: "A trend that we're really feeling is the argyle knits. You'll have seen some of these come through the catwalk." The fine knit cardigan features a tan, grey and cream colourway which means it will be easy to pair with outfits. Hannah also revealed a dark denim co-ord is set to hit the rails next month. The "super relaxed" rugby top-style shirt and loose bottoms will look perfect together, or can be styled separately. Primark's new £10 summer top is the perfect & Other Stories dupe "I love this shape, really, really easy to wear", Hannah gushed. "It can be worn as a co-ord, but equally just as cool styled separately." Next up, the fashion expert said a tan suede jacket is a "big favourite" across the team. The stylish outerwear features "beautiful" stitch detailing on the pockets. Sticking with the transitional buys, shoppers will also be able to snap up a navy paisley print quilted jacket. Hannah said: "This is a really good one for the unpredictable British weather. It's a great layering piece. We love the colour and the print on it, brilliant transitional piece." Finally, it looks like burgundy is back for autumn with a versatile striped shirt on the way that will be perfect for the office or an "easy, casual, everyday look". "This is a gorgeous piece, I love the rich burgundy colour", Hannah said. 7 Argyle knitwear is back for AW25 Credit: Instagram 7 This burgundy shirt will look great in the office or on coffee dates Credit: Instagram 7 Hannah says this quilted jacket is the perfect transitional buy Credit: Instagram 7 The Tu Clothing team are loving the detailing on this suede jacket Credit: Instagram The Instagram clip quickly racked up more than 36,000 views with fashion fans already desperate to get their hands on the autumn buys. One gushed: "Wow Hannah, I love it all! Not wishing Summer away but will be looking out for these!" "Always the best season to style, cannot wait", said a second. A third added: "Ohhhh I'm so happy about this!" A fourth wrote: "Yup. I'll take the lot. Thank you very much." "Some great pieces there, cannot wait", chimed in a fifth. Meanwhile, a sixth cried: "Ohhhhh exciting. Some gorgeous pieces." But if you're not ready to give up summer fashion just yet, the supermarket's got you covered with bargains there too. Shoppers are going wild for a five-star Sainsbury's dress that's only £15, flatters pear shapes and makes curvy shoppers "feel confident". As well as being purse-friendly, the dress looks strikingly similar to the Everett Linen Dress, which is priced at £298. This makes the Tu dress a whopping £283 cheaper. And a £26 frock that's perfect for summer getaways is flying off the rails.
