Landmine blast kills railway staff, injures another in Odisha
Railway keyman Etwa Oram, 54, died in the blast while the injured was identified as Budhram Munda, 48. Both were from Sundargarh. "Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased's family," CMO said in a statement.
The blast occurred on the last day of Maoists' annual martyrs' week. Posters were recovered near the damaged track in which Maoists claimed responsibility for the explosion.
ADG (anti-Naxal operations), Odisha, Sanjeeb Panda told TOI, "We suspect the blast was orchestrated by Maoists from neighbouring Jharkhand. We have already intensified combing operations in co-ordination with Jharkhand Police and CRPF."
The explosion affected a section of the Bimalagarh (Odisha)-Kiriburu (Jharkhand) railway line, which exclusively serves goods trains. A senior railway official said, "Movement of goods trains on the route will resume only after police clearance."

Sources said two explosions were heard near the tracks in the Saranda forest area between Karampada (Jharkhand) and Renjeda (Odisha), one on Saturday night and another Sunday morning.
A police officer said Maoists planted landmines near the tracks, which might have been triggered when the railway employees stepped on them. DIG (western range) Brijesh Kumar Rai said the area had been secured and bomb disposal squads were checking for additional explosives.
This marks the second suspected Maoist attack in Sundargarh within three months. On May 27, Maoists allegedly stole 5,000kg of gelatin sticks from a local stone quarry, which police later recovered.

Atharva was preparing for the police recruitment examination, officials said. On Sunday, Atharva asked his mother again to buy a phone. But when his mother refused, he went to a hill in Tisgaon and jumped. Locals immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Maharashtra witnessed a similar incident last year when a 15-year-old boy died by suicide after his mother refused to get him a mobile phone on his birthday. The boy, Vishwajeet Ramesh Chamdanwale, died at his house while his mother and sister were asleep, officials said. In July last year, an 18-year-old boy died by suicide in Navi Mumbai after his father did not buy him an expensive iPhone. According to his father, the boy wanted an iPhone costing about Rs 1.5 lakh. When his father bought him a low-cost Vivo phone, he got depressed.

2 Manipur youths stabbed in Delhi: Brawl at water shop sparks 4am assault; 3 held, 1 absconding
NEW DELHI: Two men and a minor were apprehended for allegedly stabbing two youths from Manipur in northwest Delhi's Model Town. The incident occurred after the victims objected to being pushed and verbally abused by the suspects at a shop. Police have started an investigation after the two were taken to the hospital. The victims are residents of Model Town area. Police said the incident took place on July 31. One of the victims told officers that he was preparing for competitive examinations and was out for a walk with his friend on the day of the incident. Around 4 am, they arrived at a shop to get cold water. "In the meantime, three or four boys, aged about 18-22, arrived at the same shop on two motorcycles without helmets," the complainant told the police. A case was registered under sections 109(1) (attempted murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS at Model Town police station. DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh formed a team under SHO (Model Town) Ashok Giri to apprehend the accused. "The team examined the victims in detail, and CCTV footage from all surrounding establishments was collected and analysed to trace the movements and possible escape routes of the suspects after attacking the two youths," police said. Acting on intelligence from local sources and a detailed analysis of call detail records (CDRs), police conducted a raid at multiple locations. The operation led to the arrests of Krishna and Krishna Kashyap. A 13-year-old boy was also apprehended in the case. During their interrogation, the suspects confessed to their roles in the stabbing. Based on their statements, police were able to recover the blood-stained knife used in the crime. Police said that efforts are under way to verify the identity of a fourth assailant and apprehend him as soon as possible.

Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand NEW DELHI: The debate over the use of the term 'Saffron Terror', that resumed after the July 31 verdict in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, has refused to die down. Commenting on the term, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj said that colour should not be linked with terrorism. He said those who associate a colour with terrorism are supporting terrorism. The Shankaracharya said, "A terrorist is a does colour mean with the word terrorism? Terrorism is terrorism, and a zero-tolerance policy should be adopted against it... The Malegaon blast happened, but you could not find the person who committed who look for colours in terrorism are supporters of terrorism." The term 'Bhagwa Aatank' or 'saffron terrorism' was first used after the 2002 Gujarat riots, as per a report by the news agency ANI. It was later used again after the 2008 Malegaon blasts. Some political leaders and parties used the term in their statements. The term was also mentioned by then home minister P Chidambaram in an official meeting with police officials. "We do not wish to comment on the court's proceedings; whatever was done in court, we believe, must have been correct. If these people were found innocent in the court's view, then it is right they were acquitted. But the bigger problem is that the blast did not happen on its own — someone must have done it. The court also directed the Maharashtra government to pay Rs 2 lakh compensation to the families of the people who died in the blast, and Rs 50,000 to those who were injured. The seven accused were former MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhankar Dhar Dwivedi (also known as Shankaracharya), and Sameer Kulkarni. "All bail bonds of the accused are cancelled and sureties are discharged," the court said. The court examined 323 witnesses from the prosecution and eight from the defence before giving the verdict. All seven were acquitted of charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Arms Act, and other related charges. The blast occurred on September 29, 2008, near a mosque in Bhikku Chowk area of Malegaon. An explosive device placed on a motorcycle went off, killing six people and injuring 95 others. Initially, 11 people were named as accused, but charges were framed against seven. The lawyer representing the victims' families has said that he will challenge the acquittal in the high court. Earlier, on the eve of the judgment in the Malegaon blast case, Union home minister Amit Shah had said in Parliament that no Hindu can ever be a terrorist. "I am proud to say, no Hindu can ever be a terrorist," Shah had said in Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, after the NIA court judgment, former Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan also spoke on the matter last week and said that he does not support the use of the term "saffron terror." "Don't use the term 'Saffron terrorism'. If you want to describe such acts, use 'Hindu fundamentalist' or 'Hindu terrorism' instead."
