
Kraft Heinz split: Cold cheeses are a burden for its hot sauces
Today, the meal kit of processed meats and cheese may be off the menu amid the desire for healthier food, but its manufacturer, Kraft Heinz, is firmly on it.
The company is exploring spinning off the division that makes Lunchables, alongside Kraft cheese and Oscar Mayer hot dogs from its faster-growing arm that makes ketchup.
A split could deliver modest value for shareholders. The biggest upside, though, would come from tempting bidders to pay up for each of the individual companies.
To recap: Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and private equity firm 3G Capital acquired J.H. Heinz for $28 billion, including debt, in 2013. Two years later, they merged it with Kraft Foods, the US grocery business that had been spun out of what would become Mondelez International (more on that later).

But Kraft Heinz has grappled with changing consumer tastes and, most recently, the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. As sales have come under pressure, its shares have lost 70% since 2017.
Little wonder then that the company said in May that it was 'evaluating potential strategic transactions" to boost its stock price.
The logic for a split is straightforward. Kraft Heinz's sauces, spreads and condiments business, which generates annual sales of about $11 billion, is growing faster than processed meat and cheese.
People are seeking more flavour in their food, particularly if their appetites shrink—either because they are getting older or taking obesity treatments. Freed from their more sluggish sibling, brands like Grey Poupon mustard and Lea & Perrins sauce could command a higher valuation multiple.
There is a precedent here—ironically from Mondelez. After Kraft was spun off, Mondelez retained the sexier international, confectionary and snacking segments.
It has delivered a total return of over 200% since October 2012, almost double the S&P 500 Packaged Foods Index, and trades at a forward enterprise value-to-ebitda multiple of about 15.
Kraft Heinz's slower-growing grocery arm, which could have sales of about $14.5 billion, would be valued less generously. It would still be highly cash generative, though, so it could appeal to an investor looking for a steady dividend payer.
Analysts at T.D. Cowen estimate that the sauces, spreads and condiments division could be worth $29.5 billion and the grocery arm about $25 billion. Together, that's only just ahead of Kraft Heinz's enterprise value of $51 billion.

Given that much of the upside might be swallowed by the higher costs of operating both companies, why bother with a breakup? Because both companies might prove tantalizing to a bidder.
This is exactly what happened in the case of Kellogg. The company spun off its North American cereals business as W.K. Kellogg Company in late 2023. The racier snack-foods arm, maker of Cheez-It and Pringles, was renamed Kellanova.
Almost a year ago, Mars paid $36 billion, including debt, for Kellanova, a 44% premium to the share price in the preceding 30 days.
Last week, privately held Ferrero International, maker of Nutella, agreed to buy W.K. Kellogg, whose brands include Froot Loops and Corn Flakes, for an enterprise value of $3.1 billion. The $23-a-share cash offer equated to a 40% premium to the share price in the preceding 30 days.
Kraft Heinz's sauces, spreads and condiments arm would fit in McCormick's portfolio, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence told me, although there may be competition concerns. And now that Unilever is offloading its ice-cream business, might it be interested in bulking up in dressings?

As for the grocery business, it could appeal to a private equity buyer drawn to its cash flow. One complication is that Kraft Heinz is expected to have net debt of just over $18 billion at the end of this year, and much of that is likely to be allocated to the food maker.
This might make it harder for a financial buyer to load up on borrowings. Still, if this hurdle could be overcome, there could be scope to add other low-growth but cash-generative food businesses to build scale.
If both of Kraft Heinz's component parts are as successful in selling themselves as Kellogg's, this would certainly be a tasty treat for investors.
Since news of Kraft Heinz potentially doing the splits broke at the weekend, there has been much discussion of de-consolidation in the consumer sector. But like Lunchables leaving school bags, this looks more like a prelude to a corporate disappearing act. ©Bloomberg

S&P retains Bangladesh's B+ rating, flags trade risk, political volatility
S&P Global Ratings has affirmed Bangladesh's long-term sovereign credit rating at 'B+' and its short-term rating at 'B', citing stabilising external liquidity. However, it flagged heightened trade risk from relatively high United States tariffs. The outlook remains stable. The rating agency said in a statement that Bangladesh's external liquidity is stabilising, as indicated by the recent steady improvement in its official foreign exchange reserves. The macroeconomic policies enacted over the past 18 months — including a transition to a more flexible exchange rate regime, depreciation of the taka, and tighter monetary policy — are helping to rebuild foreign exchange liquidity. However, Bangladesh still faces heightened trade risk from relatively high US tariffs, it added. Forex reserves show recovery in FY25 The agency said Bangladesh's external profile is stabilising after a period of elevated pressure. Foreign exchange reserves rose by about $5 billion in fiscal 2025 to $26.7 billion, marking a notable recovery from previous lows below $20 billion. This now covers about 4.1 months of current account payments, compared with just 3.3 months at the end of fiscal 2024. Political transition in focus ahead of 2026 elections The upcoming elections in the first half of 2026 are expected to be a critical pivot point for more lasting political stability, following the abrupt collapse of the government in July 2024. 'Bangladesh's volatile political situation may stymie the predictability of policy responses,' the agency said. A caretaker government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has taken over in lieu of an elected government, following the collapse of the Awami League administration. The Awami League has since been banned from all political activities. The caretaker government has tentatively scheduled elections for April 2026, according to S&P. Stable outlook reflects balanced risks The stable outlook reflects S&P's view that Bangladesh's real per capita growth rate will remain strong relative to peers. Downside and upside risks to its external balance sheet are broadly balanced, despite near-term headwinds from global trade conditions over the next 12–18 months. Growth prospects tempered by fiscal constraints The long-term 'B+' rating reflects the country's modest per capita income and limited fiscal flexibility, arising from low revenue-generation capacity and a high interest burden. Evolving administrative and institutional frameworks also constrain the rating. 'We weigh these factors against the Bangladesh economy's strong long-term growth rate and the government's moderate debt burden,' S&P said. External support and remittances underpin resilience Bangladesh's credit profile continues to derive support from steady external financial assistance, stemming from deep engagement with bilateral and multilateral development partners. Inflows from overseas Bangladeshi workers also remain consistent. Solid export receipts from Bangladesh's globally competitive garment manufacturing sector further support the country's credit profile, the agency added.

India's Private Sector Growth Stays Strong In July, Manufacturing PMI Hits Over 17-Year High

India's private sector continued to expand at a solid pace in July, backed by strong performance in manufacturing and firm overseas demand, according to the latest HSBC Flash India Composite PMI released by S&P Global. Manufacturing remained the key growth driver. The HSBC Flash India Manufacturing PMI rose to 59.2 — the highest level in over 17 years — from 58.4 in June. The HSBC Flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index, compiled by S&P Global, stood at 60.7 in July. Though it is slightly lower than June's 61.0, but remains well above the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction. With this, the composite PMI remains in expansion mode for four straight years. 'India's flash composite PMI remained healthy in July at 60.7. The strong performance was bolstered by growth in total sales, export orders, and output levels. Indian manufacturers led the way, recording faster rates of expansion than services for all of the three aforementioned metrics," said Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC. The survey pointed to a surge in new orders, especially from global clients in Asia, Europe, and the US, with demand for Indian manufactured goods nearing a five-year high. However, despite the upbeat data, firms turned cautious. 'Meanwhile, inflationary pressures continue to heat up as both input costs and output charges rose in July," Bhandari said. Input costs and selling prices rose in July, with businesses reporting higher costs for essential materials such as aluminium, cotton, and food items. These cost pressures are now being passed on to consumers, raising concerns over household budgets and the inflation outlook. While retail inflation eased to a six-year low last month due to cooling food prices, fresh price pressures could limit the Reserve Bank of India's ability to cut interest rates further to support the economy. Though manufacturing remained the key growth driver, the services sector saw some cooling, with its index slipping to 59.8 from 60.4, although it still points to strong activity. Meanwhile, according to a recent Morgan Stanley report, India is on track to become the world's third-largest economy by 2028 and more than double its GDP to $10.6 trillion by 2035. The report also highlighted the pivotal role that Indian states will play in steering this economic transformation. Over the next decade, India is expected to contribute 20% to global growth, becoming a major engine for earnings among multinational corporations, the report said. India has already surpassed Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy according to IMF data, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam announced in May 2025. According to the IMF, India's GDP is currently $4.187 trillion, overtaking Japan's $4.186 trillion. Separately, JP Morgan in its latest report said India has emerged as a relatively safe haven among emerging markets (EMs) amid global trade uncertainties. The report highlighted that India is benefiting from a combination of falling inflation, improved system liquidity, and lower government borrowing, which are expected to support economic growth. The report adds that India is expected to post the highest GDP growth among countries in JP Morgan's global universe in 2025. Asian shares retreat after Alphabet, AI stocks nudge Wall Street to more records
Manila, Jul 25 (AP) Asian shares retreated on Friday after Wall Street inched to more records as gains for Alphabet and artificial-intelligence stocks helped offset a steep tumble for EV-maker Tesla. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 0.7 per cent to 41,511.09 after two days of gains following President Donald Trump's announcement of a trade deal that would place a 15 per cent tax on imports from Japan. That's lower than the 25 per cent rate that Trump had earlier said would kick in on August 1. Data released on Friday showed the inflation rate in Japan's capital Tokyo rose 2.9 per cent year-on-year in July, down from 3.1 per cent in June. Japanese government efforts to moderate inflation are working, though underlying Tokyo price pressures remain elevated, ING Economics said in a commentary. It expects the Bank of Japan to hold interest rates steady at its July 30-31 meeting, but said the central bank would likely raise its forecast for inflation. In the Chinese markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.1 per cent to 25,383.07 and the Shanghai Composite index slid 0.3 per cent to 3,593.38. On Thursday, China and the European Union issued a joint call to action on climate change during an otherwise tense bilateral summit in Beijing riven with major disagreements over trade and the war in Ukraine. Next week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said he will meet with Chinese officials in Stockholm, Sweden, to work toward a deal with Beijing ahead of a tariff truce that expires on August 12. Trump has said a China trip 'is not too distant' as trade tensions ease. 'One big question for markets is whether the tariff ceasefire is extended. We expect that an agreement will be attainable, but, in the interim, markets will watch closely to see if there are adjustments to current tariff rates in either direction,' ING Economics said. In South Korea, the Kospi picked up 0.3 per cent to 3,199.91, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.4 per cent to 8,673.80. Taiwan's Taiex dropped 0.1 per cent and in India, the Sensex fell 0.1 per cent. On Thursday, the S&P 500 added 0.1 per cent to its all-time high set the day before, closing at 6,363.35. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7 per cent to 44,693.91, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 per cent to a record 21,057.96. Alphabet climbed 1 per cent after the company behind Google and YouTube delivered a fatter profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. It's leaning more into artificial-intelligence technology and said it's increasing its budget for AI chips and other investments this year by USD 10 billion to USD 85 billion. That helped push up other stocks in the AI industry, including a 1.7 per cent rise for Nvidia. The chip company was the strongest single force lifting the S&P 500 because it's the largest on Wall Street in terms of value. But an 8.2 per cent drop for Tesla kept the market in check. Elon Musk's electric-vehicle company reported results for the spring that were roughly in line with or above analysts' expectations, and Musk is trying to highlight Tesla's moves into AI and robotaxis. The focus, though, remains on how Musk's foray into politics is turning off potential customers, and he said several rough quarters may be ahead as 'we're in this weird transition period where we'll lose a lot of incentives in the US.' Stocks have broadly been rallying for weeks on hopes that President Donald Trump will reach trade deals with other countries that will lower his stiff proposed tariffs, along with the risk that they could cause a recession and drive up inflation. In other dealings on Friday, US benchmark crude oil added 13 cents to USD 66.16 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 12 cents to USD 68.48 per barrel.
