The best Mother's Day gifts: 68 thoughtful ideas for £50 and under they'll love

The best Mother's Day gifts: 68 thoughtful ideas for £50 and under they'll love

The Guardian20-03-2025
Whether you're 16 or 60, shopping for your own mum or someone else's, Mother's Day gifts needn't be formulaic. In fact, we'd argue that they should be thoughtful, fun or useful (but possibly not too useful), or provide a moment of escape. There's no worse gift than one bought out of obligation, unconsidered and, therefore, underused.

We hope this carefully curated guide of 68 presents will spark some ideas for the mothers in your life. Whether she's in the first frazzle of parenthood, sitting on an empty nest, or anything in between, we've got Mother's Day covered.
Toast floral print bandana
£45 at Toast
This linen scarf, hand screen-printed in India, is a brilliantly versatile gift. It can be worn around the neck, around a ponytail, Birkin-esque around the handle of a bag or, a la some more adventurous dressers, around the biceps as a little arm scarf. It will elevate an otherwise simple outfit or add another focal point for more maximalist dressers.
Cross-body leather phone bag
£25 at Etsy
If you have yet to succumb to the phone strap movement, allow me to introduce you to this very pleasing leather phone bag. Handmade in the UK, they come in a Rothko of colours and are pretty enough to make up for the fact that they're also a very practical gift.
Keanu Reeves appreciation club T-shirt
£23 at Everpress
Everpress is a treasure trove of T-shirts and sweatshirts, in designs that will speak to – and for – almost everyone: lovers of pasta, pints, nature, freedom and, in this instance, Keanu Reeves. Opt for a design that aligns with the mother in your life and support independent creatives in the process. Keanu would surely approve.
Casio analogue watch
£19.99 at Argos£24.90 at Casio
So long as you're sure that a timepiece won't land as a thinly veiled barb about perceived timekeeping flaws, a watch is a great gift. Yes, watches are sort of obsolete. But that's what makes it a nice thing to receive – you're unlikely to buy one yourself, but it is charming and, actually, practical – one less reason to whip out the phone.
Joan clip in Bleached Buttercup
£28 at Tort
Frivolity and joy are things I would look for in a Mother's Day gift and this buttercup rhinestone hair clip, as daft as it is, has both in spades. It might not come cheap compared with the clips you can buy in Claire's but, having recently bought one from this company, I can assure you they're a superior build. And there's nothing like a good claw to keep the hair out of your eyes on the playground slide/school run/while hounding a teenager out of bed. Ellie Violet Bramley
Red rose bag charm
£12.50 at Marks & Spencer
This cute charm could add a touch of glam to your mum's bag or keys. Plus, 'it looks like it costs about 20 times the price tag,' says Jess Cartner-Morley, who highlighted it in one of her monthly style roundups.
Anyday Hennriette point
£49 at John Lewis
For busy mums, a pair of comfortable shoes is essential, but that doesn't mean they can't be stylish. These Jess Cartner-Morley-approved pumps are both, and Jess says they 'look very classy for the price'.
Perfect Night's Sleep magnesium bath milk
£35 at Marks & Spencer£40 at Neom
This dreamy bath soak is like sleep in a bottle. Packed with sleep-promoting magnesium, skin-calming oat milk and calming essential oils like lavender, it will force its recipient to relax and prepare for deep rest. Pair it with a cuppa and a podcast for the ultimate wind-down.
Aerin Rose lip conditioner
£24 at Selfridges£26 at Estee Lauder
This is without doubt my favourite lip balm, thanks to its rich texture, subtle pink shine and ability to really protect from the elements. It's a little treat that feels special enough to gift.
Deep Relax rollerball
£26 at Aromatherapy Associates£26 at Amazon
Infused with vetiver, chamomile and sandalwood, this pulse-point rollerball promotes instant calm, perfect for your mum's stressful moments.
Jo Malone London Restore body scrub
£50 at Selfridges
Few body scrubs feel like a spa treatment in a pot, but this is one of them. The sugar exfoliator removes dead skin cells, as the rich oils smooth and restore the skin's moisture levels, leaving behind a scented veil of honey, clove and nutmeg.
Chanel Rouge Coco Baume Shine
£37 at Harvey Nichols£31.45 at John Lewis
This hybrid lip balm, gloss and lipstick is the perfect hard-working luxury. It gives lips a moisturising hit of glossy colour and is housed in ultra-chic classic Chanel packaging. I use a little on my cheeks too for a natural glow.

£49 at Cult Beauty£41.65 at John Lewis
Featuring a blend of warm, sunset-inspired shades in shimmer and matt finishes, this suits-all eyeshadow palette is effortless to use, whether your mum is a beauty novice or a pro.
Penhaligon's ladies' discovery collection
£50 at Penhaligon's
This beautiful set of five Penhaligon's fragrances is a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves to switch up their scent to match their mood. Definitely try the Favourite for the warmer months and indulge in Halfeti for the cooler nights.
Aesop Resurrection Aromatique hand balm
£27 at Space NK£27 at Cult Beauty
Aesop's hand creams are legendary, and for good reason. Infused with sweet almond oil, mandarin rind and rosemary leaf, this rich yet fast-absorbing balm nourishes dry, overworked hands without leaving a greasy residue. Whether kept by the sink, on a desk, or in a handbag, it's an everyday luxury that makes a thoughtful (and practical) gift. Anita Bhagwandas
Espa IsoTonic mask
£32 at Look Fantastic£32 at Sephora
'My favourite self-care ritual is a 10-minute session on a Sunday with this cooling, super-hydrating treatment smoothed over my face and neck, in front of Netflix,' said Hayley Spencer in our self-care gift guide. Encourage your mum to take some time for herself too with this face mask.
Jones Road fragrance rollerball in Shower
£16 at Jones Road
Handpicked by Sali Hughes for our beauty gift guide, this scent is so popular it's normally sold out. Perfect for 'on-the-go freshen ups'.
Dr Glycolic Soft Feet 7-day peel socks
£6 at Beauty Pie
Buy your mum a self-care treat that will leave her feet feeling baby soft. 'They sound gross, but once you try this at-home pedi method you'll be addicted,' says Hayley Spencer.
Turks And Caicos Beach nail polish
£8 at Nails Inc£8 at Amazon
'Cappuccino-coloured nails look great with everything,' says Jess Cartner-Morley. This option from Nails Inc is perfect for busy mums who want a one-shade-fits-all colour to go with every outfit.
Shield ring
£40 at Dinosaur Designs
This ring itself isn't pre-historic; it was made in Sydney, probably very recently. But the tactile, swirling resin jewellery from Dinosaur Designs feels Jurassic. It comes in an Iris Apfel-worthy colour range and, while a lot of the brand's prices, mainly its homewares, would make an Ankylosaurus blush, the rings are a more affordable gift.
Stacking family birthstone ring
From £21.60 at Etsy
It's a cliche that parenthood makes you more sentimental, prone to cry at the sight of a baby photo or unbracketed milk tooth, but it's true. If in a few years, my now three-year-old decided to give me one of these, her birthstone nestled next to mine, I can guarantee I would melt. I would like to think that my usually unsentimental mum would be the same – maybe I will test that theory this year. EVB
Gold heart hoops
£36 at Boden
A cute twist on classic hoops, these heart-shaped earrings are fun but very wearable, and 'just the right amount of cheesy,' according to Jess Cartner-Morley.
Estée Lalonde Sunburst sterling silver chain bracelet
£49 at Daisy£49 at Niche Jewellery
Daisy 'designs jewellery for the everyday', says Emma Spedding in her roundup of affordable jewellery brands. So if your mum's style is more understated, Daisy will probably have something to suit her taste. This silver bracelet with delicate sunburst charms is simple but elegant.

£40.77 at Anut Cairo
This charming jug is hand-moulded and painted in Fayoum, Egypt, by a company that works with craftspeople across the country. The perfect hard-to-find gift. Hannah Booth

Retro-inspired mini dress is now £45 in Joanie's huge summer sale

Shopping writer Lauren wore the discounted design to a fancy dinner and received lots of compliments Fashion fans will likely already be familiar with Joanie, the vintage-inspired clothing brand that has carved out a loyal following for its retro silhouettes and playful prints. Think Twiggy-style minis, romantic puff sleeves and vibrant florals that look straight out of the '60s. The good news is the brand is currently running a huge sale, with up to 70% off a dreamy selection of dresses, skirts, blouses and more. Among the markdowns is one of my personal favourites: the Katy Blue Floral Ruffle Sleeve Mini Dress, £45, from £75. I wore it to a fancy dinner back in June and received so many compliments throughout the night, including from a fellow fashion journalist who genuinely thought it was a Pucci dress. It looks like something a shopper would find after spending hours scouring vintage shops. The striking floral print is a real head-turner - colourful without being garish and vibrant enough to stand out in a crowd of neutrals. The frilly ruffle sleeves add an extra touch of fun, while the mini hemline feels playful yet still sophisticated. Plus, it has pockets, which, as any girl knows, is always a bonus. Embracing Joanie's signature 60s vibe, I teamed it with green velvet Mary Jane shoes and a slick of bright red lipstick - I used No7's Pro Artist Matte Muse Lipstick in Red Carpet Ready, to be precise - for a Twiggy-esque look. However, it can be easily toned down with nude sandals and a clutch for a more casual outing. Shop the look £75 £45 Joanie Buy Now on Joanie Product Description For those that love the Joanie aesthetic, there are similar retro-forward labels, such as Sister Jane, which leans into whimsical ruffles, puff sleeves, and statement collars. The brand even has a preloved section on its website. Otherwise, Rixo is known for its beautiful hand-printed prints and vintage-inspired cuts. The brand offers a mix of stylish everyday wear, beautiful dresses, and wedding-ready bridal options. There are plenty of other standout pieces in the Joanie sale. I also like the look of the Daisy Flared Sleeve Ruffle Neck Wrap Blouse, now down to £47.40 from £74. It features a lovely daisy print and a side bow to accentuate the waist. The Bellatrix Short Sleeve Velvet Jumpsuit is also an excellent choice for Christmas parties and is now reduced to £35.60 from £89. However, despite mostly positive reviews, one person warned: "It's not for tall people. I'm 5'6" with a long body and short legs. The trousers are just about OK for me if I wear flats." Still, this sale is a treasure spot with a soft spot for the past. The sale is available to shop via Joanie here.

Blind date: ‘Pick a number higher than 10. The company, restaurant and atmosphere were simply the best'

What were you hoping for? A story to tell. First impressions? Tall, charming and the first to arrive. I had hoped to so I could be composed and in control, but my phone is rubbish so I couldn't follow the directions. What did you talk about? Brexshit and the fallout with which we are living. We had a cheers to my friend's mum, Brenda, who had the most wonderful funeral earlier in the day, and a cheers to Jayesh's mum, whose birthday it would've been. Most awkward moment? We decided the food mess on my side of the table was not worth mentioning. So, no awkward moments. Good table manners? Impeccable. Best thing about Jayesh? I got an incredibly warm welcome. We cut straight to the chase about the wine (really fab choice by Jayesh). Our political opinions and suchlike were on a par, and he is generous to a fault. Blind date is Saturday's dating column: every week, two strangers are paired up for dinner and drinks, and then spill the beans to us, answering a set of questions. This runs, with a photograph we take of each dater before the date, in Saturday magazine (in the UK) and online at every Saturday. It's been running since 2009 – you can read all about how we put it together questions will I be asked? We ask about age, location, occupation, hobbies, interests and the type of person you are looking to meet. If you do not think these questions cover everything you would like to know, tell us what's on your mind. Can I choose who I match with? No, it's a blind date! But we do ask you a bit about your interests, preferences, etc – the more you tell us, the better the match is likely to be. Can I pick the photograph? No, but don't worry: we'll choose the nicest ones. What personal details will appear?Your first name, job and age. How should I answer?Honestly but respectfully. Be mindful of how it will read to your date, and that Blind date reaches a large audience, in print and online. Will I see the other person's answers? No. We may edit yours and theirs for a range of reasons, including length, and we may ask you for more details. Will you find me The One?We'll try! Marriage! Babies! Can I do it in my home town?Only if it's in the UK. Many of our applicants live in London, but we would love to hear from people living elsewhere. How to applyEmail Would you introduce Jayesh to your friends? Of course – my friends are inquisitive (nosy), so it would be nice. Describe Jayesh in three words. Very engaging person. What do you think Jayesh made of you? Not at all a messy eater – pretty sure of that. Did you go on somewhere? Couldn't really – it was a school night. And … did you kiss? Guardian, please! If you could change one thing about the evening, what would it be? My phone, to guide me in the right direction. Marks out of 10? Pick a number higher than 10. The company, restaurant and atmosphere were simply the best. Would you meet again? We promised the restaurant a revisit. What were you hoping for? A fun night out and not to make a fool of myself. First impressions? Imelda is a charming, happy lady and put me at ease immediately. What did you talk about? Life experiences, politics, Brexshit … We talked so much I can't remember what we talked about. Most awkward moment? Me being early. Good table manners? Absolutely perfect. Best thing about Imelda? Putting me at ease, and her Irish accent. Would you introduce Imelda to your friends? No, I think they'd like Imelda more than me! Yes, of course, no reason not to. Describe Imelda in three words. Sensitive, caring lady. What do you think Imelda made of you? No idea – I probably talked too much. Did you go on somewhere? We were the last in the restaurant, so Imelda walked me to my station. And … did you kiss? We had three hugs. The connection felt more friendly – but ours will be a great friendship, that's for sure. If you could change one thing about the evening, what would it be? We could have carried on talking for longer, but it was getting late. Marks out of 10? 10. Would you meet again? Yes. We are going back to Cord for a taster menu, as friends. Imelda and Jayesh ate at Cord, London EC4. Fancy a blind date? Email

Lioness Jess Carter's alarming fear after first kiss with Germany's Ann-Katrin Berger

England star Jess Carter is in a relationship with Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, but she initially didn't consider the idea of a romance with her best friend England's Jess Carter is loved up with fellow footballer Ann-Katrin Berger, but before they got together, Jess had never dated a woman. ‌ The 27-year-old defender met Ann-Katrin when they both played for Birmingham City FC in May 2016. ‌ Although they were teammates, they barely spoke for the first six months. "At first, I thought she was arrogant," Ann-Katrin told The Guardian."But the more I got to know her, the more I was drawn to her." ‌ At the time, Jess was still living with her family in Barford, Warwickshire, but she was ready for independence. By 2017, she wanted to move out, and found out Ann was looking for a housemate. In February, they moved in together in Solihull and quickly became close friends, bonding over their shared love of football and films. Pizza, partying and a new mantra - How Lionesses celebrated reaching Euro 2025 Final Jess Carter's defiant racism message after starring in England's Euro 2025 win ‌ While their friendship blossomed, Jess didn't initially consider the idea of something more. She had just ended a relationship with a man and thought she was straight. That summer, while away at training, she found herself missing Ann-Katrin. Curious whether there might be more than just friendship between them, she decided to take a chance and planned a night out. "A friend encouraged me, and I thought - if I don't try, I might regret it." ‌ In August 2017, Ann-Katrin took Jess out on what she intended as a dinner date. But Jess was unaware of the romantic intention. Jess said: "When she called it a 'date', I thought she meant as friends. Even when she paid, I didn't think twice - Ann's one of the most generous people I know." ‌ Friends asked Jess how the evening went, but romance still didn't cross her mind, as she had never dated a woman. A few days later, while they were relaxing at home, Ann-Katrin took the leap and kissed her. She admitted: "I was nervous. Jess had always seemed open-minded, but I'd also heard her talk about guys, so I wasn't sure." ‌ They didn't talk about it right away, but after a second kiss days later, they had an honest conversation. "I could sense something had changed," said Jess. "Ann isn't someone who dates casually - she only kisses someone if she's emotionally invested. I cared about her deeply as a friend, but I was still trying to understand my feelings." Jess told Ann-Katrin she wanted to try, but needed time to be sure. She admitted: "I didn't want to rush into something if it was just a phase, or risk hurting her." ‌ Though Ann-Katrin was more certain early on, Jess soon caught up. Things progressed naturally and quickly, and, within a few months, they were saying "I love you." Last year, the pair announced their engagement with a heartfelt social media post. They revealed the news with a selfie of the couple in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York City after the culmination of the Women's Super League season. In a post on X, the couple posed alongside one another for a selfie, with Carter's caption reading: "7 years down forever to go" along with red heart and ring emojis.
