Panchayat polls rescheduled, voting on July 24 & 28
Dehradun: The Uttarakhand State Election Commission on Saturday issued a notification for the three-tier panchayat elections, stating that the election process will begin on July 2 with the filing of nominations.
Voting will be held in two phases -- on July 24 and 28 -- across 12 districts, excluding Haridwar.
The revised schedule follows a stay by the Uttarakhand high court on the issue of seat reservations, which had initially delayed elections set for July 10 and 15. However, on Friday, a division bench comprising Chief Justice G Narendra and Justice Alok Mehra vacated the stay order issued on June 23, noting that the repetition of reservations was minimal and consistent with article 243D of the Constitution.
Following the court's order, state election commissioner Sushil Kumar issued the notification on Saturday. As per the revised schedule, nominations will be accepted from July 2 to 5, scrutiny will take place from July 7 to 9, and withdrawals can be made from July 10 to 11. Counting of votes will take place on July 31.
"The elections of members of all gram panchayats, pradhans, area panchayats and district panchayats (in 12 districts except Haridwar) will be conducted," the notification stated, citing powers under article 243-K of the Constitution.

Thiruvananthapuram: The protest march by BJP activists and councillors towards the corporation main office on Saturday turned violent as they clashed with police over allegations of corruption in a laptop distribution initiative run by the civic body. Defending the protest, BJP leaders claimed the corporation's laptop initiative was mired in corruption and a betrayal of student beneficiaries. The corporation, however, refuted the allegations, calling the protest a politically motivated attempt to divert attention from the corruption charges against BJP members. "We followed proper procedures for procurement and distribution," said a senior official of the corporation. AP CM orders swift action on outsourcing staff issues, stresses urban hygiene
Vijayawada:Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday directed officials of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) department to immediately resolve issues related to outsourcing employees. He sought complete details after reports emerged that several areas in Visakhapatnam were affected by water supply disruptions due to a strike by outsourcing staff. Officials informed the Chief Minister that the issue in Visakhapatnam had been resolved with the active involvement of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) officials. Naidu instructed MA&UD Minister P Narayana to convene a cabinet sub-committee meeting to focus on resolving the matter at the earliest. He emphasised the importance of ensuring uninterrupted services, especially during a season when the spread of infectious diseases is more likely. At the inauguration of the Constitution Preamble Park at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar School of Law, Nagpur University, on Saturday, CJI Gavai firmly asserted that the idea of a separate constitution for a state was never part of Ambedkar's vision for a unified India. Gavai, a member of the five-judge Constitution bench led by then Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that unanimously upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370 in December 2023, elaborated on Ambedkar's foundational principles. He highlighted Ambedkar's stance during the drafting of the Constitution, emphasising that 'the country needs only one constitution. The country would be governed by one constitution. If we want to keep the country united, we need only one constitution."
