Definitely (maybe) the gig of the decade? Gallagher brothers reunite as Oasis hits Cardiff after 16-year hiatus
The concert at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital will be the first of a 41-date run of gigs spanning the world, including in the United States, Japan, Australia and Brazil.
Once-warring brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, their bandmates and UK support acts will play in Cardiff today and Saturday before five hometown gigs in Manchester starting on July 11.
Further sold-out British and Irish concerts will follow at London's Wembley Stadium, Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium and Dublin's Croke Park, before the international leg of their Oasis Live '25 tour.
'All that matters is how the people in that stadium feel,' Liam Gallagher, 52, said on social media last week, as months of anticipation reach a climax.
Fans have been sharing their excitement at the first chance to see Oasis play live since 2009 — or ever — after it was long seen as a remote prospect following one of music's most acrimonious break-ups.
The band's 1990s gigs are the stuff of legend.
'The feeling is biblical!' fuel tanker driver Sean Campbell, 35, told AFP before attending today's gig.
'I've been waiting years for their return. I missed out on going years ago, so this is my first time seeing them live.'
Ticket controversy
Oasis, famous for 1990s hits like Live Forever and Wonderwall, announced its comeback tour last August, days before the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Definitely Maybe.
The Manchester rockers split in 2009, with Noel saying he 'simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer'.
The Gallagher brothers had maintained a war of words about each other for more than a decade, performing individually over those years but never together.
The surprise announcement that they had finally put aside their feud to reunite sparked an online frenzy for tickets but outrage over sudden price hikes that saw Britain's competition watchdog threaten legal action.
Resale tickets costing thousands of pounds have surfaced, while fans have also been targeted by online scams.
Britain's Lloyds Bank estimated in April that victims had collectively lost more than £2 million (RM11.6 million).
The tour is expected to be a boon for the struggling UK economy.
Fans could spend more than £1 billion combined on tickets and outgoings such as transportation and accommodation, Barclays bank estimated in May.
'Rough and ready'
Oasis will be supported in the UK by Richard Ashcroft, frontman of British rock band The Verve, as well as the Liverpool-formed band Cast.
The band has not released the setlist for their opening and other shows, with rampant speculation online over which classic tracks will feature and whether any new material will be performed.
There are also many rumours over the potential for special guests appearances.
Illuminated drones displayed Oasis's classic logo above the Cardiff stadium late Wednesday, in a one-night display adding to the buzz around the tour's kick-off.
Gates open today at 5pm (1600 GMT), with the band due on stage just over three hours later after both support acts have played.
The performance will wrap up by 10:30pm, organisers said.
The stadium, which has a capacity of 74,500 for concerts, is set to have its retractable roof closed for both nights, with an incredible atmosphere expected.
Oasis reportedly began jamming together months ago, before starting rehearsals in London more recently.
The band has reportedly welcomed several new members for the tour, including a keyboard player and drummer.
Writing in the tour programme, Noel, 58, reflected on the band's enduring popularity, saying 'a new generation recognises how Oasis wasn't manufactured'.

Ozzy Osbourne bids emotional farewell with Black Sabbath in final hometown show at Villa Park
BIRMINGHAM, July 6 — Heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne brought down the curtain on his stellar career with Black Sabbath yesterday, rattling through the band's most iconic songs in front of an adoring hometown crowd. The 'Prince of Darkness' held court from a giant leather throne, topped with a bat, at Villa Park stadium in Birmingham, firstly in a five-song solo set and then with his original bandmates for the first time in 20 years, and last time. 'It's the last song ever. Your support has enabled us to live an amazing you from the bottom of our hearts,' the 76-year-old singer told the crowd after finishing the set with Paranoid—the band's most famous song. The stadium in Birmingham, central England, is a stone's throw from where the band formed 57 years ago, pioneering the hard-rock style that gave rise to heavy metal. And the genre's big hitters were in town to pay tribute to the band that started it all. Anthrax were one of the first acts on stage, with early arrivers giving the US rockers a rapturous welcome and getting the mosh pit into full swing. They were later followed by a rock royalty collaboration, as Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood performed Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. Guns N'Roses sent the 40,000 fans wild with the first chords to Welcome to the Jungle, and there were other sets from Pantera, Tool, Slayer and Metallica. 'I can assure you the rabies shots I went through afterwards aren't fun,' he told US TV host David Letterman in 1982. But there was no repeat performance on Saturday. Eager to soak in the historic occasion, many came without tickets, including Derya, who travelled from Cologne with her partner. Oasis mania returns: Kuching exhibition pays homage to Britpop legend

The exhibition, which opened today, coincides with the launch of Oasis' 'Live '25 Tour' at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales in the UK. Organised by die-hard local fans, the exhibition is the passion project of Ahmad Shafizan Mohd Ghazali, 40, his wife Nur Liyana Razali, 36, along with friends Ahmad Bahtia Hamdan, 42, and Saiful Bahari Abdul Ghani, 40. Adding to the nostalgic vibe at the press conference launch, the three men arrived in classic Liam Gallagher-style parkas. Ahmad Shafizan and Nur Liyana even named their son Liam, a nod to the band's iconic frontman. 'Oasis is very special to me because of the attitude, the song-writing, and Liam Gallagher's voice. It's pure rock and roll,' said Ahmad Shafizan. His impressive collection of memorabilia, much of which is on display, includes rare box sets, vinyl records, and even a pair of Clarks LG Desert Rain shoes – a limited collaboration with Gallagher. 'Some of the items, like the Time Flies vinyl box set, are special to us as a couple as we even made it one of our wedding gifts,' Ahmad Shafizan added. He estimated having spent over RM5,000 on Oasis memorabilia over the years. 'After the band broke up in 2009, it was quite a frustrating time. But when they announced their reunion in August last year, we were shocked and beyond excited. 'That's when we decided to start collecting more seriously again,' he said. One of the exhibition's highlights is a tambourine used by Liam Gallagher during a solo concert in Bangkok – caught by a fan and loaned for display by a fellow collector known as Mr Arap or 'Rock'n'Roll Kid'. Ahmad Bahtia, who once flew with Saiful Bahari to Japan to catch Liam Gallagher live, said the exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to the band's return. 'It's such a great thing to see Oasis make a comeback. Even seeing Liam alone was already amazing, so I can't imagine the energy when it's the full band again,' he said. For Saiful, the exhibition is also about honouring the loyalty of the local fanbase. 'We're holding this to show our love for Oasis. Many Sarawakians, especially those who grew up in the 1990s, know and love Oasis. 'You can't grow up in that era and not know 'Wonderwall' or 'Don't Look Back in Anger',' he said. Nur Liyana described Oasis as the soundtrack of her youth and relationship. 'We first discovered Oasis back in high school. From 'Wonderwall' to 'Live Forever', their songs tell the story of our lives,' she said, recalling how Live Forever played during their wedding ceremony. The organisers said more memorabilia from fans across Malaysia is expected to arrive soon, including from a Sarawakian collector based in Kuala Lumpur. Visitors can look forward to a rich array of items – from cassette tapes and CDs to rare promotional materials, concert merchandise, and heartfelt personal tributes that echo the spirit of Britpop's golden age.
