Amazon rolls out Gopuff ultra-fast grocery deliveries across UK
Gopuff promises same-day delivery from local 'micro-fulfilment centres' – with orders arriving in under an hour and as fast as 15 minutes, available all day, every day.
The Pennsylvania-based company was one of a clutch of ultra-fast grocery delivery companies that expanded quickly during the Covid-19 pandemic when lockdowns heightened consumer demand.
Turkey-based rival Getir pulled out of the UK, Europe and the US last year after its finances came under pressure and it kickstarted a cost-cutting drive.
Amazon's UK roll-out of Gopuff follows an initial launch to residents in Birmingham and Salford in May.
The service is now available in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Chessington, Coventry, Derby, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Salford, Sheffield and Swansea.
It joins grocery retailers Morrisons and Iceland, which are available to Amazon's UK customers.
Russell Jones, Amazon's director of grocery partnerships, said: 'We are always working to give customers more choice and more convenient options to have their groceries delivered.
'The new launch with Gopuff brings our customers access to a convenient and affordable way to access their everyday groceries.'

Amazon asks corporate workers to ‘volunteer' help with grocery deliveries as Prime Day frenzy approaches
Corporate employees of Amazon were asked on Monday to volunteer their time to the company's warehouses to assist with grocery delivery as it heads into its annual discount spree known as Prime Day. In a Slack message reviewed by the Guardian that went to thousands of white-collar workers in the New York City area from engineers to marketers, an Amazon area manager called for corporate 'volunteers to help us out with Prime Day to deliver to customers on our biggest days yet'. It is not clear how many took up the offer. The ask came the day before Prime Day kicks off. The manager said volunteers are 'needed' to work Tuesday through Friday this week, in two-hour shifts between 10am and 6pm in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, where the company operates a warehouse as part of its grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh. Corporate employees seconded to the warehouse would be tasked with picking items, preparing carts and bags of groceries for delivery, packing boxes on receiving carts, and working to 'boost morale with distribution of snacks', though they would be allowed to step into a conference room to take meetings and calls, according to the message. The manager noted such an effort would help 'connect' warehouse and corporate teams. Amazon routinely hires thousands of extra warehouse workers in advance of its annual Prime Day sale, which sees the massive online retailer discount thousands of goods, creating a surge in orders and demand for delivery. Amazon Fresh, available to Prime subscribers but separate from Amazon subsidiary Whole Foods, is also offering discounts this week during Prime Day, such as a free 90-day trial of the delivery services and $30 off of deliveries for current members, while maintaining its same-day or next-day delivery service. New York is one of Amazon's busiest areas in the US. An Amazon spokesperson, Griffin Buch, said this is not the first time 'grocery corporate' employees have been 'invited to volunteer' with fulfillment. 'This support is entirely optional, and it allows corporate employees to get closer to customers while enabling our store teams to focus on the work that's most impactful,' Buch said. Amazon Fresh has faced turbulence in recent years. Amid cost-cutting efforts in 2023 and a struggle to turn a profit on grocery delivery, CEO Andy Jassy closed several physical Amazon Fresh locations and laid off hundreds of employees in the segment. Amazon has laid off more than 27,000 employees overall since cost-cutting efforts began in 2022. A week ago, Jassy spoke on CNBC of a future at Amazon where drones and even robots were used to fulfill and deliver goods to people. Rusty railway carriage transformed into eco-friendly space
The project is the work of Newport-based architect Spence Gadsby, 32, who launched handcrafted hut business Tŷ Green in early 2023 after securing a £20,000 Start Up Loan from the British Business Bank. Mr Gadsby said: "Every project teaches me something new. "I've gone from constructing moveable huts on wheels to modular garden builds that can be delivered and assembled quickly with workshop-level precision. "It's all about refining the process while staying true to my sustainability goals." Mr Gadsby turned the carriage into a warm, energy-efficient living space using natural, breathable materials. Tŷ Green has completed three major eco-conscious builds so far, with a fourth underway. Mr Gadsby's passion for sustainability was reinforced by a course at the Centre for Alternative Technology in mid-Wales. The £20,000 loan allowed him to secure workshop space and materials for his first project. He uses UK-grown cedar cladding, Welsh sheep wool insulation, and locally milled ash in his designs. His latest build features 100 per cent wool insulation from Wool Insulation Wales and timber from small sawmills such as Coppice & Crown. Demand for his bespoke huts is growing, and he now hopes to expand by hiring support and taking on multiple projects at once. He is also exploring planning permission for an eco-friendly glamping site. Mr Gadsby said: "The Start Up Loan gave me the foundation to get going. "It funded my workshop space and the materials for that all-important first build. "I've not taken on any further funding, but I'm now building a strong reputation for bespoke, sustainable huts that speak for themselves." Jessica Phillips-Harris, senior manager for Wales at the British Business Bank, said: "Spence is a brilliant example of how Start Up Loans can help turn a big idea into a growing business."
