First batch of Hajj pilgrims return to Srinagar, rest to come back on June 26

Hindustan Times19-06-2025
While the first batch of Hajj pilgrims returned to Srinagar on Tuesday after performing the Hajj in Saudi Arabia, the rest of the 13 flights will start returning from June 26, officials said.
Chief minister (CM) Omar Abdullah received the first batch of Hajj pilgrims at the Srinagar International Airport. The CM personally welcomed and congratulated the pilgrims on their safe return. He interacted with the pilgrims and inquired about their experiences and the facilities provided during the pilgrimage.
The pause in the return of the flights is to compensate for the time some pilgrims missed in the holy land as they couldn't start the journey on time in May owing to the suspension of Hajj flights after the military standoff between India and Pakistan. 'The first batch of pilgrims who had left for the journey on time on May 4 have now returned but the rest of the flights will start returning from June 26,' said Shujaat Qureshi, executive officer of the J&K Hajj Committee.
The first returning batch comprised 178 pilgrims, out of the total 3,606 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir who undertook the pilgrimage this year.
The flight operations at the airport were suspended on May 7 when India targeted terror infrastructure at nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir in response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
Hajj flights from Srinagar were also affected due to the closure of the Srinagar airport. The first batch of 178 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir had left for Saudi Arabia on May 4 for the annual pilgrimage, but the authorities had to cancel seven flights of pilgrims that were to leave between May 7 and 12. The flights had then resumed from May 14.
'Those pilgrims, who had commenced their journeys late owing to the situation in May, will spend these days there before returning from June 26 onwards,' he said.
Usually, the Hajj pilgrims from J&K spend a minimum of 40 days in Saudi Arabia as part of the package.
A government spokesperson said that the government has made elaborate arrangements to ensure a hassle-free arrival experience for the pilgrims.
'Necessary logistical and transport facilities have been put in place to facilitate their smooth journey from the airport to their respective destinations across Jammu and Kashmir,' the spokesperson said.
There has been around 50% decline in the number of pilgrims who performed Hajj from Jammu and Kashmir this year as compared to 2024, officials said, citing costlier Hajj rates owing to discontinuation of subsidy, disinterest of foreign airlines and high temperatures as the reason.
Last year 7,008 pilgrims from J&K performed the Hajj as against 12,079 pilgrims in 2023. In 2022, around 6,000 pilgrims from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh performed the pilgrimage, while the Hajj could not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid restrictions.

Court orders Maharashtra regulatory body to resume hybrid hearing in 4 weeks

The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) to reinstate the hybrid model of hearings, i.e. allowing parties to opt for either physical or virtual appearances within four weeks. The court held that "procedural fairness includes the right of parties to choose their mode of hearing, especially when both physical and virtual modalities are feasible."advertisementThe direction came after a petition was filed by a city resident seeking timely execution of a 2020 order in his favour and requesting the court to streamline the execution proceedings before MahaRERA. The petitioner highlighted systemic delays, the absence of a mechanism for urgent hearings, lack of physical hearing options post-pandemic, and one-way communication from the bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale observed that while virtual hearings were introduced due to COVID-19, MahaRERA's continued insistence on a virtual-only model, despite having the infrastructure for physical hearings, was unwarranted and detrimental to access to justice.'Access to justice is a constitutional guarantee and cannot be reduced to a mere formality,' the court said, emphasising that procedural fairness includes the right of parties to choose their mode of judges noted that tribunals, created to provide speedy and decentralised justice, must be accessible in both form and bench noted that even the Apex court has said that "access to virtual hearings alone is insufficient. Denial of physical hearing, even when facilities exist, amounts to an unreasonable fetter on litigants' rights."Accordingly, the court directed MahaRERA to restore hybrid hearings, maintain a register of urgent mentions, timestamp its orders, assign fixed hearing dates and publicly display functional contact details and court made it clear that these directions are aimed at realigning MahaRERA's functioning with the principles of inclusivity, transparency, and timely adjudication. A compliance report has been sought by September 4.- EndsMust Watch

Supreme Court stays use of Bombay HC's 7/11 blast verdict as precedent, but won't halt release of acquitted accused

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Thursday stayed the Bombay High Court verdict in the Mumbai train blasts case of July 11, 2006 to the limited extent that it will not be treated as a precedent in other cases. A division bench of justices MM Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh, however, refused to stay the release of the 11 accused who were acquitted by the high court. However, on the question of law we will say that impugned judgment is not treated as precedent in any other cases. Therefore, to that extent let there be stay on the impugned judgment". Appearing on behalf of Maharashtra government , solicitor general Tushar Mehta argued that the high court ruling could adversely affect other trials under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act ( MCOCA ). Hence, Mehta sought an urgent stay on the verdict though he did not press for a stay on the release of the acquitted persons. Mehta said as far as stay is concerned, he is "not on liberty" of the accused. Live Events Referring to the high court ruling, Mehta added "there are some findings which will affect all our MCOCA trials. The judgment can be stayed and release be not hampered". The court agreed and granted limited stay on the judgment as urged by Mehta. The bench issued notice to the respondents, directing them to file their responses to the appeal filed by Maharashtra government challenging the high court verdict. In its appeal, the Maharashtra government has challenged the Bombay High Court's decision to acquit all the 12 accused in the 7/11 train blasts case of 2006, nearly a decade after a special court awarded death penalty to five accused and life sentences to the remaining. The case relates to the serial bomb blasts that occurred on July 11, 2006, in which seven bombs exploded in suburban trains on Mumbai's Western Railway line, killing 187 people and injuring more than 800 people. A special court had in 2015 sentenced five of the accused to death and seven to life imprisonment. One of the convicts died in 2021 due to Covid-19 while lodged in Nagpur jail. The Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all the accused observing that "the prosecution utterly failed in establishing the case beyond reasonable doubts". Lambasting the prosecution, the high court ruled that the prosecution's case gave the public a "misleading sense of resolution" while "the true threat remains at large".
