Superstar recluse Sade's totally different life and career after ditching fame

Daily Mirror28-05-2025

The soul singer quickly became a global icon after the release of her first album in 1984 and would go on to be one of the biggest music stars of the 1980s and 1990s
From the fame of "Smooth Operator" to a tranquil life in Somerset, soul legend Sade Adu has swapped her 1980s global stardom for a peaceful existence in the West Country.
Born Helen Folasade Adu in Nigeria and later known simply as Sade Adu, she relocated to Colchester at just four to live with her grandparents. Her formative years were spent growing up in Essex.

However, her life took a dramatic turn when she and her band skyrocketed to fame following the release of their debut smooth soul single, "Your Love is King," which climbed to number six on the charts in 1984. Their first album, Diamond Life, received even more praise, selling a staggering 10 million records and remaining a classic four decades after its release.

Sade also won over critics, bagging four Grammy's for her hits, including being named Best New Artist in 1986 following the release of their second album. Around this period, the singer dabbled in acting, making her debut in Absolute Beginners, a film set in 1950s London.
Over the next two decades, Sade achieved international fame, with singles like "Smooth Operator", "The Sweetest Taboo" and "No Ordinary Love" echoing from radios worldwide. These tracks continue to be popular today, having been streamed over a billion times on Spotify alone, reports the Daily Record.
The elusive star, known for her infrequent album releases and long absences from the public eye, has seemingly embraced a life of tranquillity, snapping up a farm in the West Country where she resided during the pandemic with her partner Ian Watts and her mother, affectionately known as "Granny Annie".
In a 2020 interview with British Vogue, the singer said: "Like everyone, we're on a ship of unknown destination but that's life ... no mutiny yet."
She added: "There's always so much to do: there are songs I so want to write, and I've rediscovered the joy cooking brings."
Despite her retreat to the countryside, Sade continues to create music, with her latest single "Young Lion" dropping in 2024, following "Flower of the Universe" from the Disney movie A Wrinkle in Time featuring Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey.
Sade's contribution to music was officially recognised when she was awarded an OBE in 2002 as part of the Queen's New Years Honours List, and she later received a CBE in 2017 for her services to music.

Celtic-daft finale for Rod Stewart as he rocks Glastonbury at 80

Sir Rod Stewart impressed at the iconic Glastonbury Pyramid stage on Sunday afternoon, taking centre stage for the coveted Legends slot. Sir Rod Stewart took to the iconic Glastonbury Pyramid stage on Sunday afternoon for the coveted legends slot. The 80-year-old rock icon's appearance came after he suggested the UK "give Nigel Farage a chance", comments that resulted in jibes from fellow festival act, Kneecap, who dubbed him " Rod, the Prod" and "older than Israel" during their set on Saturday. ‌ Kate Nash also took a swipe at Rod just hours before his performance, but the music legend brushed it off as thousands packed in to see him perform. ‌ Rod followed in the footsteps of previous legend stars including Shania Twain, Kylie Minogue and Dolly Parton. The show began with Rod being piped on stage to Scotland the Brave, dressed in a white open necked shirt, grey pinstriped trousers, and a jacket with gold detailing. His band matched in white suit jackets and gold ties. He opened with Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me) before commenting on global issues, mentioning the Middle East and Ukraine ahead of a rendition of Love Train. Despite some boos from Kneecap fans earlier, Rod's crowd were delighted, with thousands singing along to classics like Forever Young, Young Turks, and Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? Fans on social media praised the performance, calling the turnout 'massive' and applauding Rod for looking 'fabulous for his age.' Rod brought a Celtic touch to the festival, with his band's drum kit proudly displaying the Parkhead club crest and the singer sported a green shirt emblazoned with 'Celtic' during the finale. ‌ The legends slot saw memorable collaborations as Rod was joined on stage by Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, with whom he performed If You Don't Know Me By Now. Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood followed with a nostalgic take on Faces' Stay With Me. Glasgow's own Lulu appeared in a stunning cream suit for a raucous duet on Hot Legs. The pair shared a warm moment before performing the ballad I Don't Wanna Talk About It. Rod ended the show with a tear-jerking rendition of Sailing, as his band took a unified bow dressed in Celtic strips. Rod beamed with pride as he skipped off stage following his two hour set.

Lorde dares to bare as she strips off for Vogue Australia - after shocking fans with X-rated album cover

Lorde has continued her X-rated era with a racy shoot for Vogue Australia. The New Zealander, 28, stripped off for the fashion magazine's July issue, posing in underwear and a revealing frock. On the cover, the pop singer fronts the camera in a black, lacy bra paired with worn-looking loose trousers. Inside the magazine, Lorde wears a dramatic, plunging gown that flaunts her chest and slender figure. In her interview with Vogue Australia, Lorde says she chose What Was That to be the first single from her new album, Virgin, as she felt she had regained her voice through the uptempo track. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. In her interview, Lorde says she chose What Was That to be the first single from her new album, Virgin, as she felt she had regained her voice through the uptempo track Lorde also ruminated on what success means to her these days, and says it has changed. 'Success then was the cover of Rolling Stone, winning a Grammy, my friends thinking my EP was cool, my heroes shouting me out' she said. 'Success now is having the big moments feel like play and being fully aligned inside, not just having it look right on the outside.' It comes after the hitmaker sent fans into a frenzy with a surprise performance at Glastonbury on Friday, which saw her whip her top off in the sweltering heat. Thousands of fans flocked to the Woodsies stage after rumours of a set from the Royals hitmaker spread around Worthy Farm. Such was the excitement that bosses announced the stage had temporarily closed due to overcrowding shortly before her set began. The singer - who previously graced The Pyramid stage in 2022 - performed all of her biggest hits from Ribs to Green Light, as well as a rendition of her new album. The show came on the same day as she dropped supporters' jaws after unveiling the cover of her new vinyl - which featured a very racy photograph. The singer had already raised eyebrows with the project's main artwork, which features an x-ray of her pelvis - inter-uterine device included. However, the vinyl for Virgin - Lorde's fourth studio album and first since 2021's Solar Power - is even more explicit and features what appears to be her genitals beneath a pair of see-through plastic pants. Taking to social media to express their shock, some fans worried about their family members potentially seeing the NSFW cover. They shared on X/ Twitter: 'So the new Lorde vinyl just got delivered. I was not prepared for the insert'. Another said, 'Lorde really got her cat out like that on her vinyl huh?' one more wrote: 'My Lorde vinyl is getting delivered to my parent's house I'm scared [sic].' Others added: 'when you open your Virgin vinyl and see lordussy' and 'should've stayed curious about the Lorde vinyl'. However, not everyone was so critical of the vinyl's artwork and others described it as 'beautiful' and far from being shocking. 'A lot of you are being very weird about the Lorde vinyl cover… who tf cares if her lordeussy was out. It's just a body' someone wrote. 'Wait... Is this the new album art from Lorde that everyone is talking about? It's a beautiful photo, and the entire vinyl package is, too, but come on, it barely shows anything. No need for all the discourse. 90's Madonna would kill you all [sic].' Others said that the reaction to the vinyl was so extreme that they expected it to be a lot more explicit than it actually is. 'I really thought the Lorde vinyl insert would be a lot worse than people are saying it is, you guys are kinda dramatic' one said. Lorde is one of the highest-selling New Zealand singers of all time and her 2013 song Royals reached number one in America, eventually being certified 14 times platinum.
