Kajol says Ramoji Film City is ‘prime example' of haunted place; Hyderabadis says ‘matlab kuch bhi'

Hindustan Times19-06-2025
Anyone who has grown up in Hyderabad has most likely heard the urban legend that Ramoji Film City, founded by the late Ramoji Rao, is haunted. And it looks like Kajol believes it, too. While promoting her upcoming horror film Maa, Kajol mentioned that the film city is a 'prime example' of being haunted, only to invite trolling. (Also Read: Kajol reveals how she teaches daughter Nysa Devgan to deal with social media trolls: 'Don't know how much of it is real')
In an interview with Galatta India, Kajol was asked if she had ever experienced negative energies, and she replied, 'I have experienced this multiple times. Call it negative energy or vibes, but sometimes, when you go to a place, you feel like something isn't right. I've shot at places where I couldn't sleep all night, where I felt it would be good if I could just leave this place.'
She then brought up Ramoji Film City and added, 'There are quite a few places like that. A prime example is Ramoji Rao Studios in Hyderabad, which is considered one of the most haunted places in the world. I am lucky enough not to have seen anything (ghosts), though.'
While the urban legend of the film city being haunted has been going around for a while, Kajol caught flak for repeating a 'foolish belief'. One Redditor wrote, 'For movie promotions, say whatever trash you can say, tomorrow she will portray ISRO scientist mother and then will say rational aur science se better kucch nhi. (nothing better than science).' An X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, 'With due respect to Kajol, if Ramoji Film City were truly haunted, lakhs of people wouldn't be visiting it every year. It's Hyderabad's pride in film tourism.'
A Redditor joked, 'Ghosts still alive in 2025? No way.' Another wrote, 'In the Ramoji Film City #Bahubali 1 & 2, #Pushpa 1 & #Pushpa2, #RRRMovie,#JaWan, #pathaan, #KGF2, #SalaarCeaseFire, #Jailer and so many Big Indian movies are done shoot in the RFC and so many upcoming pan India movies doing shooting in the RFC think twice then talk about it.' One even claimed, 'It's negative propaganda on Telugu industry.'
A frustrated Redditor wrote, 'Haunted why??? Coz its the worlds biggest film city. Matlab kuch bhi. (You're saying anything now).' The film studio is set on 1,666 acres with 47 sound stages and holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest film studio.
However, few people came to Kajol's support with one X user pointing out, 'Including Kajol, Tapsee many celebrities are revealing about their haunted and spooky experiences in RFC! Of course it's a wonderful film city built with all facilities but there is a rumor that it was built on Nizam soldiers grave yard!' One pointed out, 'I have heard same from Rashi Khanna and Sundar C (Tamil director).'
Maa is releasing in theatres on 27 June.

‘Sarzameen' movie review: Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kajol can't salvage this emotional misfire

Sulking sons, duty-bound fathers, and suffering mothers make for engaging Hindi cinema. This week, emerging director Kayoze Irani revisits familiar daddy issues with mixed results. Sarzameen's basic premise reminds me of Ramesh Sippy's Shakti, where circumstances force a father in uniform (Prithivraj Sukumaran) to choose between his son (Ibrahim Ali Khan) and his duty. Set in the picturesque political cauldron of Kashmir, the stakes get higher here when the neglected son stutters his way into the enemy camp led by dreaded militant Kabil (K.C. Shankar). As expected, the mother (Kajol) tries to be the connecting link, but a past that needs to be addressed remains unhealed, leaving wounds unresolved. Sarzameen (Hindi) Director: Kayoze Irani Cast: Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol, Ibrahim Ali Khan, K.C. Shankar Duration: 137 minutes Storyline: An army officer out to eliminate militancy in the Kashmir valley finds himself at a vortex where his principles are put to the test After preparing the audience for a realistic terrain, Irani takes mainstream leaps of faith, landing in no man's land. The film attempts to explore parenthood, patriotism, and militancy, but fails to effectively integrate the personal within complex socio-political dynamics, instead resorting to tropes that have become clichéd due to overuse. It seems the makers set out to map the complexity of militancy in the Kashmir valley through a personal story, but ended up making a safe product to populate the OTT shelf. Hence, the drama doesn't leap at you, the conflict doesn't engage you enough, the suspension of disbelief doesn't hold, and the layers in the story don't add up to create an emotional swell. However, despite their immense talent, their chemistry doesn't click, and the melodrama falls short. Shankar is no Amrish Puri to generate the dread of revenge. For a script that demands a deep emotional commitment, Ibrahim Ali Khan, like the film, is undercooked. Sarzameen is currently streaming on Hotstar

‘Sarzameen' X Review: Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol praised for 'powerful' performance; Ibrahim Ali Khan's act 'much better' than debut film

'Sarzameen' starring Kajol, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Ibrahim Ali Khan is an emotional thriller set against the tense and sensitive backdrop of Kashmir. The film, which released directly on OTT at midnight on Friday, 25 July, brings together a strong cast under the direction of debut filmmaker Kayoze Irani, son of veteran actor Boman Irani . This patriotic action drama explores how family, love and loyalty can come into conflict during times of political and emotional turmoil. Ibrahim Ali Khan plays a young man struggling with dark secrets, while Kajol and Prithviraj bring depth and power to their emotionally charged roles. Here's a X review of the film: Reviews offer a mix of praise and criticism The reactions online have been mixed. Some viewers called it engaging and emotional, while others found it flat and lacking depth. A user said, '#Sarzameen had a solid premise but failed to deliver. Weak screenplay and direction let it down. Prithvi, Kajol & the rest of the cast did well, but there was no real emotional connect. Overall, a mid watch with no standout moments. AVERAGE' Another shared: '#Sarzameen Did not expect that twist coming.. Else everything was flat and emotionless.. One time watchable if u have time. (Watch after keeping ur brain in locker) Overall : 3/5' A gripping tale of patriotism and pain with a twist Praising the overall impact of the film, a X user posted, '#Sarzameen is a gripping tale of love, loss & patriotism set against the tense backdrop of Kashmir. Taut direction & powerful performances make it an engaging emotional thriller. A solid watch!' One user said,'#Sarzameen Review: SHOCKING, PATRIOTIC & EMOTIONAL. RATING - 4/5 Sarzameen comes with a HUGE twist in the end that you've never seen in any patriotic thriller before. Chilling and emotionally nerve cracking. #PrithvirajSukumar shows what patriotism means and #Kajol showcases true motherhood and love. #IbrahimAliKhan exceeds expectations. Overall, a super watch for patriotic cinema and thriller lovers. ' A one-time watch for some Another viewer wrote, '#SarzameenReview: It has vibes like Mission Kashmir and Fanaa. Rating: 3/5 #Sarzameen is a one time watch film where #PrithvirajSukumaran and #Kajol pull off the dramedy very well whereas the #IbrahimAliKhan's performance is just decent.' "The music was a big misfit imo, really poor. Now for the performances, Prithviraj did his role really well, too good for a poor script. Kajol was good too, ibrahim really surprised oth, he did a really decent job much better from his debut movie much much better."

Kajol Changed Behind Trees, Shah Rukh Khan Carried Equipment: Karan Johar On DDLJ Shoot

Karan Johar said the actors had no entourages, and there were no big departments managing different aspects of the film. Released in 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) is one of Bollywood's most iconic romantic films. Directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films, it stars Shah Rukh Khan as Raj and Kajol as Simran—two young Indians who fall in love during a European vacation. The film was extensively shot in Switzerland with a crew of 21 people. Karan Johar, who was an assistant director on the film, recently recalled the film's international shoot in a chat with Jay Shetty. Karan Johar said, 'When we shot in Switzerland, we were a unit of 21 people, just 21 people making a movie in one bus. We would sit in one bus, we would drive, and Adi (Aditya Chopra) would look at the locations and say, 'Stop. This looks beautiful. Let's go film.'" 'We used to take Kajol behind a tree and make her wear a saree, and Shah Rukh would change anywhere and then come and shoot, and then we would get back into that bus," he shared. The filmmaker recalled how, since there were only 21 people, everyone had to help out without any starry tantrums. 'Everyone held equipment and walked up, like, if you had to shoot on a mountain top. Shah Rukh was holding equipment, and Kajol was too; literally, everyone was a team. There was no additional help or support. Today, everyone is so spoilt," he shared. Karan Johar said the actors had no entourages, and there were no big departments managing different aspects of the film. 'I remember when Kajol was there, her hair and make-up person did not get a visa. I was brushing her hair on set, and her mother was doing her make-up," he shared Recalling dressing Kajol in a saree for the shoot of the Tujhe Dekha Toh song, Karan said, 'So I went by memory and remembered how I had seen my mom wear it. We tied that saree in some way, which, according to me, looks terrible, and if anybody watches DDLJ, it is the electric blue saree she wears in the snow in the song Tujhe Dekha Toh, where Shah Rukh is in a red shirt. Her saree is like a kaftan on her. We didn't know what to do, we had no one to help us." Karan concluded, 'Still, we had the best time." DDLJ marked a turning point in Bollywood, modernising Hindi cinema while maintaining its emotional roots. The chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol became legendary, and the film's music—composed by Jatin-Lalit with songs like 'Tujhe Dekha To" and 'Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna"—remains beloved. The film's impact was monumental. It became the longest-running movie in Indian cinema history, screening continuously at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir theatre for over 25 years. It also set new standards for storytelling, global appeal, and box office success. Even decades later, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge continues to capture hearts with its charm, humour, and emotional depth. It's more than just a movie—DDLJ is a cultural milestone that defined an era and still influences Indian cinema and audiences around the world.
