Maresca slams 'joke' Club World Cup delay as Chelsea game stopped for two hours
Chelsea's 4-1 win against Benfica in the last 16 of the Club World Cup took a mammoth four hours to complete due to the match in Charlotte being stopped because of yet another weather delay
Enzo Maresca branded Chelsea's farcical Club World Cup tie a 'joke' after it was delayed for nearly TWO HOURS. Chelsea boss Maresca was furious after his players were taken off the pitch for one hour and 53 minutes because of lightning storms and severe weather warnings.
And Maresca claimed the United States was not fit to host the tournament after Chelsea were caught up in the SIXTH weather delay of the tournament which will have a knock-on effect for next year's World Cup. They eventually went through against 10-man Benfica 4-1 after extra time as the game took four hours and 38 minutes to complete from the original kick-off time.
Strict US rules state that games must be delayed for 30 minutes for safety reasons if lightning is spotted within a five-mile radius - and it resets every time another flash is spotted. It is the sixth weather delay in the tournament, with Chelsea now into the quarter-finals against Palmeiras and on course for a potential semi-final showdown with Manchester City if they both progress.
Maresca said: "It's a joke. That's why I said it. if they're already suspended six games, probably there is something that is not working. I'm not here to decide the rule. I'm no one to decide the rule. I'm the last one. I'm talking as a manager. As a manager, it's difficult to manage two hours suspended.
"There is some problem for me personally. But I'm not talking - I'm talking as a manager. Because when you are two hours inside and you try to keep them in the game, but for two hours, they are speaking with the family outside for safety reasons.
"They are eating something, they are playing, they are laughing. How can you keep them two hours inside, focused? Then we are happy. We are happy to be here. We are happy to be in this competition. But it's something that it's not normal for."
Maresca argued that certain cities in the United States should not be staging games because of the weather warnings at this time of year. Chelsea were 1-0 up when the game was suspended with 84 minutes on the clock only for Benfica to snatch a last gasp penalty before they had Gianluca Prestianni sent off in extra-time and Maresca's men ran riot.

He added: "I think it's a joke to be honest, it's not football. It's not for us. You cannot be inside. It's completely something you know, but I struggle to understand. I can understand that for security reasons, you are to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven, eight games, that probably is not the right place to do this competition."

Benfica head coach Bruno Lage singled out Pedro Neto for special praise following the side's Club World Cup defeat to Chelsea, pointing to the winger's constant threat in 'one-on-one' duels. The Blues appeared to be cruising towards the quarter-finals as Reece James fired a superb free-kick beyond Anatoliy Trubin to break the deadlock in the 64th minute, before play was suspended due to nearby lightning. 'For 85 minutes we were in control of the game. We didn't concede anything; we created chances enough to win the game. And then after the break the game changed completely,' Maresca said. Andre Onana has endured a tricky couple of seasons at Manchester United at Old Trafford and it appears that Ruben Amorim has finally decided what to do with him ahead of next term Manchester United are reportedly willing to sanction a loan move for Andre Onana after stumbling into a real issue regarding his future. The Cameroonian international has endured a tricky couple of seasons since his arrival from Inter Milan. High-profile errors have blighted his performances and put his position as number one in jeopardy. United are open to letting him leave and would apparently prefer a permanent sale. But Onana's high wages have made an exit this summer tricky and Red Devils chiefs are now having to get creative to move him on. According to The Sun, United are open to letting Onana leave on loan. Monaco - who have recently signed ex-United midfielder Paul Pogba - have been linked with a move but have struggled to get a deal over the line. It is said that United are now awaiting approaches and would prefer to send the 29-year-old to Europe as opposed to a Premier League rival. Speaking earlier this month, Onana appeared to hint that he was also open to an exit. He said: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" While Onana's future remains up in the air, United have already launched their search for a new number one. Aston Villa 's Emi Martinez remains their number one target but a deal for the 2022 World Cup winner is expected to be expensive. Other options include Botafogo's John Victor, Porto star Diogo Costa and Cruz Azul number one Kevin Mier. Former United stopper Ben Foster believes that Martinez would be the outstanding candidate should Onana be moved on. He said: 'It's a brutal league, the Premier League, and I kind of think [over] the last two seasons that he [Onana] hasn't done enough to prove that he is a Manchester United number one. 'I think he's got ability, and like so many other Man United players, he'd go elsewhere and probably flourish. I think that's probably going to be the case with him as well. If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like Emi Martinez, they've got to go for it. He's still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'A lot of people said this season, probably not up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'You've got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno's going to be staying now.
