Statement on the Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis
The Diocese of West Malaysia joins in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a servant of Christ whose life and ministry touched countless lives across the world.Pope Francis will be remembered for his profound humility, his steadfast commitment to the poor and marginalised, and his deep pastoral heart. In an age marked by uncertainty and division, he stood as a voice of compassion, mercy, and hope—calling the world to a renewed sense of justice, love, and care for all creation. His leadership transcended boundaries, and his witness to the Gospel inspired not only the Roman Catholic faithful but many beyond his own flock. We recall with gratitude his openness to dialogue, his efforts to build bridges across faiths and traditions, and his sincere desire to foster unity in the human family. As Anglicans, we have seen in Pope Francis a Christian leader whose humility and courage echoed the very heart of Christ. To our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers in Malaysia and throughout the world, we offer our deepest sympathies and prayers. In this time of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with them, giving thanks to God for the life of a remarkable shepherd who now rests in the eternal peace of Christ.'Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.' – Psalm 116:15
May Pope Francis rest in peace and rise in glory.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Steven Abbarow
Bishop of West Malaysia

Sealed with the spirit: A day to remember

On Saturday, July 12, the Church of St Francis of Assisi was filled with joy and celebration as 41 young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Aug 01, 2025 Confirmands kneeling in silence as Archbishop Julian prays over them. By Claudia Sze Lim Ak SalvestiorOn Saturday, July 12, the Church of St Francis of Assisi was filled with joy and celebration as 41 young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Surrounded by their families, catechists, and parishioners, they were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in a Mass that was more than just a ceremony — it was a powerful reminder of faith, love, and the unity we share as one Church. Archbishop Julian Leow led the celebration with warmth and fatherly care, joined by our parish priest, Fr Paul Cheong, OFM Cap, who had faithfully guided us confirmands throughout our journey. During his homily, the archbishop didn't just speak — he connected. His message was clear and heartfelt: never lose sight of your faith, because God walks with you through every step, every struggle, and every joy. You could feel his love in every word, and many of us were moved in ways that words can't fully capture. As one of the confirmands, standing at the front, I felt a mix of nerves, awe and peace. Some of us were quiet while others a little shaky but all of us were present in that sacred moment. When the chrism oil touched our foreheads and we heard the words 'Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit,' it felt like more than a blessing. It felt like a promise that will walk with us for the rest of our lives. However, this day wasn't just about us. Parents wiped away quiet tears as they recalled the memories of baptisms and First Holy Communions of their child. Catechists watched with pride, seeing the seeds of faith they had once planted now begin to bloom. Parishioners bowed their heads in prayer, knowing these young hearts had now been strengthened to stand as soldiers of Christ. As the final hymn ended, something beautiful lingered in the air. It wasn't just joy or celebration but hope. In a world that often feels divided, this day reminded us that faith still brings people together. As one of the 41 who were confirmed, I know we're not meant to walk this path alone. Together, uplifted and united by our Church family, we go forward to carry Christ's light into the world.

Thousands join Sibu Sacred Heart Cathedral's 40th anniversary mass

Part of the congregation at the 40th Anniversary of the Dedication of Sacred Heart Cathedral Mass. — Photo from Facebook/Diocese of Sibu SIBU (July 31): Thousands of faithful joined the 40th Anniversary of the Dedication of Sacred Heart Cathedral here yesterday. Roman Catholic Bishop of Sibu, the Rt Rev Joseph Hii, thanked the congregation for attending the mass, which showed their love for the church. In his homily, Hii said the consecration of the cathedral served as a reminder or a sign that the church is not the only place where people could find God, but everywhere and in everyone. 'The whole world that is created by God is His house. Each and every one of us; all the creatures that are made by God are holy and everyone and every place is a place to encounter God. 'God is inviting all of us to participate by our very actions so that we consciously consecrate ourselves to God, to belong to God just like a church or a temple consecrated to God,' he said. Among those in attendance were priests from different parishes in the Diocese of Sibu. The mass was held in English, Iban, and Chinese. The cathedral was first built in 1985 and it underwent a renovation in 2013 to accommodate the growing Catholic population here. In 2015, a high mass was held to rededicate the renovated cathedral in conjunction with its 30th Consecration Anniversary. Joseph Hii lead Roman Catholic Diocese of Sibu Sacred Heart Cathedral

Pope to young pilgrims: 'Your voices will be heard to the ends of the earth

At the opening of the Jubilee of Youth, the Holy Father welcomes young people to St. Peter's Square, inviting them to pray for peace: 'Let us walk together with our faith in Jesus Christ.' Jul 30, 2025 Pope Leo addresses the young pilgrims in St Peter's Square (@Vatican Media) By Fr. Johan PachecoOn Tuesday evening, Pope Leo XIV welcomed young people in Rome for the Jubilee of Youth. After the welcoming Mass in St. Peter's Square, which was celebrated by Monsignor Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, the Pontiff made a few trips round St Peter's Square in the popemobile to greet those present. The Holy Father reminded the young pilgrims that they are 'the salt of the earth, the light of the world.' 'You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world! And today your voices, your enthusiasm, your cries — all of them for Jesus Christ — will be heard to the ends of the earth!' said Leo XIV. 'Today marks the beginning of a few days, a journey, the Jubilee of Hope, and the world needs messages of hope. You are that message, and you must continue bringing hope to everyone,' the Pope emphasized. 'We hope that all of you will always be signs of hope in the world," Pope Leo continued. "Today we are at the beginning. In the coming days, you will have the opportunity to be a force that brings God's grace, a message of hope, a light to the city of Rome, to Italy, and to the entire world. Let us walk together with our faith in Jesus Christ. And our cry must also be for peace in the world. Let us all say together: We want peace in the world! Let us pray for peace.' 'Let us pray for peace,' the Pope invited his listeners, 'and let us be witnesses of the peace of Jesus Christ, of reconciliation — this light of the world that we are all seeking.' After the blessing, the Pontiff wished the young pilgrims a good week in Rome and invited them to gather again on August 2 and 3 for the vigil and Mass of the Jubilee of Youth: 'See you in Tor Vergata.' Archbishop Fisichella: Be Witnesses of the Risen ChristAt the Mass presided over by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, before the Pope's arrival, the Italian prelate reflected in his homily on the day's Gospel: 'The Evangelist tells us very clearly: he tells us, above all, that faith is an encounter — an encounter, however, that we do not begin ourselves.' 'Never be afraid,' Fisichella urged, 'to be witnesses of the Risen Christ, because this is what makes us believers, Christians. Christ is risen and we have seen Him; we believe in Him. But this witness also becomes action.' At the conclusion of his reflection, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization recalled the Pope's words from the previous Sunday: 'To encounter Christ — that is why I await you. To encounter Christ and be strengthened by Him in faith and in the commitment to follow Him with integrity.'--Vatican News
