Bangladesh Crush Sri Lanka By 83 Runs In 2nd T20I To Level Series

News1813-07-2025
Asked to bat first, they posted a competitive 177 before rolling over the hosts for a paltry 94 — Sri Lanka's lowest T20I total against Bangladesh and their heaviest defeat to the Tigers in the format.
It was also the lowest T20I total ever recorded by Sri Lanka at home.
The hosts, chasing what seemed a gettable target on a decent surface, never got going. The innings unravelled in a flash, lasting just 15.2 overs as wickets tumbled like a house of cards.
The slide began when the in-form Kusal Mendis, guilty of complacency, tapped one to cover and set off for a single without urgency.
Shamim Hossain swooped in and with a rocket arm nailed a direct hit, the turning point that opened the floodgates.
Sri Lanka were reeling at 30 for four inside the Power Play, with the top order back in the hut.
Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain turned the screws, claiming three wickets to halt a faltering Sri Lankan chase in its tracks.
Only two Sri Lankan batters reached double digits as the middle order folded under pressure and Bangladesh's fielders threw themselves around like men possessed.
Earlier, Bangladesh had stumbled at the start, losing both openers inside the first two overs.
But skipper Litton Das stood tall, anchoring the innings with his 12th T20I half-century — a classy 76 off 50 balls studded with one four and five sixes.
He rode his luck, surviving twice, on 30 and 56, both off the bowling of Jeffrey Vandersay and made Sri Lanka pay dearly.
Litton found a willing ally in Shamim and together they stitched a brisk 77-run stand for the fifth wicket off just 39 deliveries.
Shamim provided the fireworks, blasting 48 from 27 balls with five boundaries and two towering sixes, giving the innings the momentum it sorely needed.
Sri Lanka's only silver lining was left-arm seamer Binura Fernando, who returned career-best figures of 3 for 31.
Litton was named player of the match for his decisive knock.

Joe Root jumps past Sachin Tendulkar, only behind Ricky Ponting in hunt for yet another record

Joe Root is at that stage of his career where the mountains of runs he has scored start reaching record territory even if his score in a particular innings may not be of note. The former England captain fell for just 29 off 45 balls to Mohammed Siraj on a feisty Day 2 of the fifth Test against India. However, that was enough for him to go past Sachin Tendulkar and take second place in the list of batters with most runs in Test matches played at home. Root's career tally went to 7224 runs with that 29, while Tendulkar had scored 7216. The only player above Joe Root is Australia great Ricky Ponting, who had scored 7578 runs in Tests played at home. It is an interesting reversal of the big record that Root got closer to at Old Trafford during the fourth Test. Root had gone past Ricky Ponting's career tally of Test runs to sit second in the list of highest run scorers of all time in the longest format. The only player above him, quite famously, is Sachin Tendulkar who had scored 15,921 runs in his prolific career of 200 Tests. Root, meanwhile, now sits on 13,438 runs in 158 Tests at an average of 51.09 after the innings on Friday. Ponting finished his career on 13,378 runs in 168 Tests at an average of 51.85 with 41 centuries and 62 half-centuries. Root went past Ponting during an innings in which he scored 150 in 248 balls in England's second innings at Old Trafford. Over the course of the innings, the 34-year-old went first went past Rahul Dravid (13,288) and then Jacquest Kallis (13,289) on the list of highest ever Test run scorers. Root then went past Ponting after raising his century. Root was at the centre of one of many flare-ups during the England innings on Day 2 of the fifth Test. He got into a heated argument with Prasidh Krishna, who chirped at him throughout the 22nd over after Root walked in with Zak Crawley having fallen off the first ball. Root guided the last ball past gully for a four after which Prasidh said something again. This time, Root retaliated. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena then had a long chat with Prasidh and India captain Shubman Gill and Rahul seemed to walk in right at the end of it. 'What, do you want us to be quiet?' Rahul asked Dharmasena. The Sri Lankan umpire tried to reason with him: 'Will you like any bowler come and talk to you like that? No, you can't do that. No Rahul, we should not go that way.' 'What do you want us to do? Just bat and ball and go home?' said Rahul in reply, which Dharmasena didn't really appreciate. 'We'll discuss that at the end of the match. You can't talk like that,' he said.

Want us to keep quiet? Watch KL Rahul argue with umpire to back Prasidh vs Root

Things heated up on Day 2 of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Following a spicy build-up to the series finale—which included exchanges between India coach Gautam Gambhir and The Oval curator—the two sets of players engaged in a sledging battle on Friday in London. Leading the charge were the Indian fast bowlers, who attempted to rattle the England batters after a bruising morning Rahul, one of India's senior players, stepped in to support his bowlers as they tried to get under the skin of the English batters. The flashpoint came in the second session, when Prasidh Krishna targeted Joe Root, attempting to sledge the veteran batter. Prasidh was seen engaging in a verbal exchange with Root, who—uncharacteristically—lost his temper. The Sri Lankan official was then seen having a word with Prasidh, appearing to ask the young pacer to rein it in. It was clear that Prasidh had ramped up the aggression by provoking Root—widely known as one of the calmest cricketers in the game. However, KL Rahul appeared displeased that only the Indian bowler had been warned by the was spotted having a pointed conversation with Dharmasena, questioning whether the Indian players were expected to simply take the sledging in silence."What do you want us to do, keep quiet? KL Rahul facing post-match chat with umpires after spat with Kumar Dharmasena: ‘You can't talk like that'

KL Rahul may have landed himself in trouble for his heated verbal exchange with umpire Kumar Dharamasena during a rather feisty Day 2 of the fifth Test between India and England at the Oval. Sparks had been flying between the two sides throughout the England innings, with Rahul himself pulling Akash Deep away from Ben Duckett earlier in the day before himself getting into an argument with Dharmasena during the second session. The incident occured in the 22nd over of the English first innings. Prasidh had dismissed Zak Crawley first ball of the over and was then chirping at Root for the rest of it. Root guided the last ball past gully for a four after which Prasidh said something again. This time, Root retaliated. Dharmasena then had a long chat with Prasidh and India captain Shubman Gill and Rahul seemed to walk in right at the end of it. It had been a busy day for the two umpires during the England innings with the Indians turning up the heat on the batters particularly after the second session. Deep earlier raised eyebrows with his sendoff for Ben Duckett. He had scored 43 in 38 balls in rampaging 92-run opening stand with Crawley that came in just 12.5 overs before being caught behind off Deep. The Indian pacer punched the air in celebration before putting his arm around the Duckett's shoulder and walking a few steps with him. They also seemed to briefly exchange a few words in those seconds before Rahul pulled Deep away. Umpire Ahsan Raza also had a word with Deep after that. It was the last ball of the over and Shardul Thakur could be seen having a chat with Deep while he was fielding at the boundary the next over.
