Israel announces major expansion of illegal West Bank settlements

Al Jazeera29-05-2025
The Israeli government says it will establish 22 illegal settlements on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, including the legalisation of some so-called 'outposts' already built without government authorisation, in a move decried by Palestinian officials and rights groups.
Defence Minister Israel Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the decision on Thursday, with Katz saying that it 'strengthens our hold on Judea and Samaria,' using an Israeli term for the occupied West Bank.
He added it was also 'a strategic move that prevents the establishment of a Palestinian state that would endanger Israel'.
Smotrich, himself a settler on illegally occupied Palestinian-owned land and an advocate for Israeli annexation of the West Bank, hailed the 'historic decision'.
In a statement, the Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the move as a 'once-in-a-generation decision', emphasising its strategic value in fortifying Israel's hold along the eastern border with Jordan.
Israel has already built more than 100 illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank that are home to some 500,000 settlers. The settlements range from small outposts to larger communities with modern infrastructure.
The West Bank is home to more than three million Palestinians, who live under Israeli military rule, with the Palestinian Authority governing in limited areas.
The Palestinians see the territory as an integral part of a future state, along with occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza.
Palestinian officials and rights groups slammed the Israeli government's decision, warning that the expansion of illegal settlements would further harm the prospects for a future Palestinian state.
Palestinian presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh condemned the decision, calling it a 'dangerous escalation' and a 'challenge to international legitimacy'.
He accused Israel of fuelling instability in the region and warned the move breaches international law. 'This decision violates all international resolutions, especially UN Security Council Resolution 2334,' he said, adding that all settlement activity remains illegal and illegitimate.
Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri condemned called on the United States and the European Union to take action.
'The announcement of the building of 22 new settlements in the West Bank is part of the war led by Netanyahu against the Palestinian people,' Abu Zuhri told the news agency Reuters.
The Israeli NGO Peace Now said the move 'will dramatically reshape the West Bank and further entrench the occupation'.
'The Israeli government no longer pretends otherwise: the annexation of the occupied territories and expansion of settlements is its central goal,' it said in a statement.
'This is the largest batch of illegal Israeli settlements to be approved in one decision,' reported Al Jazeera's Nida Ibrahim from the occupied West Bank.
'Israeli settlements are strangling Palestinian communities inside the West Bank,' said Ibrahim. 'These new settlements fill the gaps, making a future Palestinian state almost impossible on the ground. Israel is using this moment – while global attention is fixed on Gaza – to cement its occupation.'
The settlement announcement comes just weeks ahead of a high-level international conference, jointly led by France and Saudi Arabia at the United Nations, aiming to revive the long-dormant process to agree a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Record number of Democrats join failed bid to block weapons sales to Israel

The United States Senate has rejected a bid to halt arms sales to Israel amid growing international condemnation of its war in Gaza. Though unsuccessful, Wednesday's vote nonetheless highlighted building opposition to Israel's war within the Democratic Party. Twenty-seven Democrats voted for a resolution to block the sale of 20,000 automatic assault rifles to Israel, while 24 voted to halt a $675m shipment of bombs. All Republicans voting were opposed. The resolutions introduced by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders are by far the closest the US Senate has come to limiting arms shipments to Israel. A bid by Sanders to block weapons deliveries in April won the support of 15 Democrats, while a similar vote in November garnered 18 Democratic votes. Ahead of the vote, Sanders, an independent, said Washington could not continue to supply Israel's 'racist government' with weapons that were being used to kill innocent people. 'Netanyahu is a disgusting liar. Children are starving to death,' Sanders said on X. Among the lawmakers supporting Sanders' bid for the first time, Patty Murray, a senator for Washington state, said that while the resolutions were 'not perfect', she could not support the continued suffering of innocent children in Gaza. 'As a longtime friend and supporter of Israel, I am voting yes to send a message: the Netanyahu government cannot continue with this strategy,' Murray said in a statement. 'Netanyahu has prolonged this war at every turn to stay in power. We are witnessing a man-made famine in Gaza – children and families should not be dying from starvation or disease when literal tons of aid and supplies are just sitting across the border.' The widening split over support for Israel among Democrats comes amid signs of growing opposition to Israel's war among the US public. In a Gallup poll released on Tuesday, just 32 percent of Americans said they approved of Israel's military action in Gaza, a 10-point drop from September. Just 8 percent of self-identified Democrats said they approved of Israel's actions, compared with 71 percent of Republicans, according to Gallup.

Iran ‘shipping empire' linked to top Tehran official hit by US sanctions

The United States Department of the Treasury has imposed new sanctions on more than 100 Iran-linked individuals, companies and ocean-going vessels in what it described as its 'largest Iran-related action since 2018'. The sanctions, announced on Wednesday, target more than 50 vessels which the Treasury Department describes as being part of a 'vast shipping empire' of oil tankers and container ships controlled by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of a senior political adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. 'This network transports oil and petroleum products from Iran and Russia, as well as other cargo, to buyers around the world, generating tens of billions of dollars in profit,' the Treasury Department said in a statement, describing the sanctions package as a 'massive action' against an Iranian family network. 'The Shamkhani family's shipping empire highlights how the Iranian regime elites leverage their positions to accrue massive wealth and fund the regime's dangerous behaviour,' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. Bessent said the sanctions on 115 individuals, entities and vessels were 'the largest to-date since the Trump Administration implemented our campaign of maximum pressure on Iran'. An Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson called the new sanctions 'a clear example of America's hostility towards the Iranian nation', according to the country's Student News Network. According to a US Treasury statement, the Shamkhani family controls a significant portion of Iran's crude oil exports and while Ali Shamkhani – father of Hossein and adviser to Supreme Leader Khamenei – was sanctioned by the US in 2020, the family owns exclusive properties around the world and has obtained foreign passports, which allow them to 'travel undetected' to conduct business overseas. 'Layers of front companies with an innocuous appearance and no easily discernible connection to Hossein's network allow it to accrue enormous profits while avoiding outside scrutiny,' the department said. In total, the new sanctions target 15 shipping firms, 52 vessels, 12 individuals and 53 entities involved in sanctions evasion in 17 countries, ranging from Panama to Italy to Hong Kong, the Reuters news agency reports. A US official told the news agency that the sanctions would make it 'much more difficult' for Iran to sell its oil, but added that the US administration did not anticipate any sustained disruption to global oil markets. China is the top international buyer of Iran's oil. The newly announced sanctions come after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said any new act of aggression against Iran will lead to a strong reaction. Posting on social media on Monday, Araghchi responded to comments by US President Donald Trump, who threatened new attacks on Iran if the country attempts to restart its nuclear programme. 'Iran, a nation with a rich culture originating from 7,000 years of civilisation, will never respond to the language of threat and intimidation. Iranians have never bowed down before any foreigners and respond only to respect,' Araghchi wrote on X. 'Iran knows exactly what happened during the recent American-Israeli aggression, both to us and our adversaries – including the extent of blows that are still being censored. If aggression is repeated, we will not hesitate to react in a more decisive manner and in a way that will be IMPOSSIBLE to cover up,' he said. 'No one in their right mind would abandon the fruits of tremendous investment in homegrown and peaceful technology which is saving lives – and simply because [bullying] foreigners demand it,' he added. Iran, a nation with a rich culture originating from 7000 years of civilization, will never respond to the language of threat and intimidation.
