Stephen King's Picks for Best Films of the 21st Century Are Surprisingly Straightforward — GeekTyrant
The roster of participants included Jason Bloom, John Turturro, Alex Winter, Julianne Moore, and dozens more. Naturally, Stephen King joined in too, and as you might expect, his list stood out, but maybe not for the reasons you'd think.
While some participants leaned into deep-cut arthouse picks. Bloom named Moneyball and There Will Be Blood , Turturro listed Oldboy and Spirited Away , King's list was surprisingly traditional. It's like the cinematic version of comfort food. You won't find any obscure festival gems here, just a solid mix of dramas, big-name directors, and a couple of genre surprises.
Here's a quick look at what made the cut: Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down , Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain , Martin Scorsese's The Departed , Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer , and the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? and No Country for Old Men .
King also included Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby , which may raise an eyebrow considering Eastwood's expansive output over the last two decades. The horror legend could've easily leaned toward Mystic River or Gran Torino , movies that arguably hit harder thematically, but he went for the heavy-hitting Hollywood drama that won four Oscars and a truckload of tears.
It's the story of a down-and-out boxing trainer and the fierce young woman he reluctantly trains, and it packs an emotional uppercut that sneaks up on you. No one walks out of that movie feeling fine.
Interestingly, the horror master only put two genre films on his list: the Korean zombie thriller Train to Busan , and The Rule of Jenny Penn , a 2025 New Zealand psychological horror flick that hasn't hit wide release yet but apparently features 'one of John Lithgow's greatest performances.'
There's no accompanying essay from King explaining why these were his choices, but the vibe is clear, he went with films that left a mark on him emotionally. That makes sense. For all his terrifying tales, King has always had a soft spot for heartache, friendship, and stories about people pushed to the edge.
What are some of your favorite movies from the last century of films?

Wordle hints today for #1,498: Clues and answer for Saturday, July 26
Hey, there! Welcome to the weekend. We hope it's an exciting one for you. One thing that may prove to be thrilling is extending your Wordle streak. To help with that, here's our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Saturday's puzzle (#1,498). It may be that you're a Wordle newcomer and you're not completely sure how to play the game. We're here to help with that too. What is Wordle? Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. There is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game's success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it's little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. How to play Wordle To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day's secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren't in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. However, you can still use those letters in subsequent guesses. You'll only have six guesses to find each day's word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It's also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT's website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets and Discord. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. How to play Wordle more than once a day If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication's games, you don't have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You'll have access to an archive of more than 1,400 previous Wordle games. So if you're a relative newcomer, you'll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day's game. De bugs? confused me, but I tried INSECTS and it fit, so I rolled with it. ANALOGY fit in 9-Across (Thanks Forrest Gump!) and both CONSENT and SECEDES were pretty obvious. I worked my way back from there and pretty soon had the whole thing wrapped up, ending in PUNCHUP back at the top. This took me 1:48. How did you do? Let me know on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. If you also play Wordle, I write guides about that as well. You can find those and all my TV guides, reviews and much more here on my blog. Thanks for reading!

You Know the 'Untamed' Cast From 'And Just Like That...,' 'Jurassic Park,' and More
Netflix is back with a new juicy murder mystery. Set in Yosemite National Park, Untamed follows a National Park Service agent named Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) who's tasked with investigating a suspicious death that takes place on park grounds. The six-episode limited series is brought to you by Mark L. Smith (Twisters, The Revenant) and his daughter Elle Smith (The Marsh King's Daughter). When Bana read the Untamed script back in 2019, he knew he had to be involved in the father-daughter helmed project. 'I just thought it was such a fantastic combination of the thriller genre, the suspense, the murder mystery, but most importantly, in the most incredible setting,' he told Variety. 'I think the idea of following someone who's trying to solve a crime, knocking on doors, and driving a car, I've seen that so many times. To see someone in a national park do it on a horse just seems so much more interesting and much more fun to do.' All six episodes of Untamed are now streaming on Netflix, and it's currently the #1 ranked show on the platform. Below, get to know the main cast. Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down, Hulk) plays Kyle Turner, a special agent for the National Park Service in the Investigative Services Branch. After a woman suspiciously falls off El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, he must investigate her death. Bana also serves as an executive producer for the series. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Peaky Blinders) plays Paul Souter, Kyle's boss and the chief park ranger at Yosemite National Park. He and Kyle are also very good friends. Rosemarie DeWitt (And Just Like That..., La La Land) plays Jill Bodwin, Kyle's ex-wife. She's a former teacher and park counselor. Though she is now remarried, she remains close with Kyle. Lily Santiago (La Brea) plays Naya Vasquez, a Los Angeles police officer who moves to Yosemite with her 4-year-old son, Gael. There, she joins the Yosemite National Park ranger crew and assists Kyle with his investigation. Wilson Bethel (Daredevil, How to Get Away with Murder) plays Shane Maguire, the Yosemite National Park's wildlife management officer. He's also a former army ranger. William Smillie (Chicago Fire, Empire) plays Bruce Milch, a Yosemite National Park ranger. He and Kyle often butt heads on the job. Raoul Trujillo (Blue Beetle, Sicario) plays Jay Stewart, a Yosemite National Park employee who works in land maintenance. He also assists Kyle with his investigation.
