Chance of Llandovery RFC drawing Quins in semi-final
The Carmarthen side's outstanding 15-12 win over RGC at Colwyn Bay last Saturday at the so called 'wild card' stage , pitting eighth-placed RGC against ninth-placed Carmarthen Quins, now gives the West Walians a place in the quarter finals on May 3.
They face a difficult trip to Ebbw Vale in the realisation that a win at Eugene Cross Park would secure a place in the semi finals.
If they were indeed to get to the last four, they would proceed to play the winners of this Saturday's S4C televised Llandovery-Pontypool quarter final.
A Llandovery victory over Pooler on May 3 would guarantee a semi final spot for the Drovers against Ebbw Vale or Carmarthen Quins on May 10.
If it were to be an all West Walian semi final, the venue would be at Church Bank by dint of Llandovery having finished the higher of the two sides at the end of the regular season.
Were Ebbw Vale to beat the Quins and Llandovery beat Pontypool in the quarter finals, then the Steelmen would have home advantage over the Drovers through the same reasoning.
So what might happen in the quarter finals this Saturday?
Ebbw Vale are undefeated at home so the challenge for the Quins is huge but they will take confidence from an excellent win at RGC, through tries from wing Louis Rees, fly half Ifan Davies and replacement prop James Newnian.
If skipper and lock Lee Taylor can galvanise his pack to stand up to the aggressive power play of the Ebbw eight and get parity of possession, then a shock could be on the cards.
At Church Bank, the Drovers will have to be at their best against in-form Pooler who recently beat top of the league Cardiff 47-27.
Shorn of their top players, Llandovery slipped up 34-33 at Bridgend in their last game of the regular season but, even with the return of the likes of Lee Rees, Adam Warren and Joe Powell, they will have it all to do.
All West Wales rugby men will be keeping their fingers crossed that Llandovery and Carmarthen Quins can record a famous double over Gwent opponents, to set up a prospectively momentous Church Bank clash on May 10.
Wild card results: Bridgend 33 - 30 Swansea; RGC 12 - 15 Carmarthen Quins.

SRC: Joe Davies signs for Pontypool after Dragons exit
The lock was released by the Rodney Parade club at the end of last season after making 137 appearances for the club. The 29-year-old from Caldicot has now signed a deal to play in Super Rygbi Cymru with Pooler, who were quarter-finalists last season. Davies played for the club last season when sent out for game time by the Dragons and is relishing a permanent return. 'I enjoyed my time playing at Pontypool last season, the supporters were great and me and my family were welcomed with open arms at the club,' said the hard-hitting forward. 'Pontypool Park is one of the most iconic grounds to play at in Wales and I can't wait to get started. 'Tom [Hancock, head coach] has put a great team together this year and I'm excited to be a part of it and add as much value as I can.' MOVE: Joe Davies has signed for Pontypool Hancock worked closely with Davies after stepping up from his Dragons academy job to temporarily help out with the seniors last season. The former fly-half believes the seasoned United Rugby Championship campaigner will add plenty of grunt up front while helping the younger members of the squad push on. 'Joe brings a huge amount of experience and know-how to our squad and will fit right in given he's already hugely respected from his prior times at the club,' said Hancock. 'When the opportunity to sign Joe came about, the decision was an absolute no-brainer for me. [Chairman] Peter Jeffreys agreed pretty much instantly too, which demonstrates just how highly Joe is regarded at this club.' Davies will join up with the squad in pre-season as they build towards their SRC opener against Swansea at Pontypool Park on September 13.

Rising star swaps Bristol for north Wales Wales U19s international Gethin O'Callaghan has left Bristol Bears to join Super Rygbi Cymru outfit RGC. The 19-year-old from Penarth was a member of the Bears academy but has been released and has opted for a move to Colwyn Bay. O'Callaghan is viewed as a promising player and the powerful centre is an explosive ball carrier with deft handling. "I'm really looking forward to joining RGC for this upcoming season," he said. "To be a part of a team who aim to progress as players but also a club, which has always been a positive insight for me. "I am excited to be back in Wales and see what we can achieve this year as a group." Part of the SRC's remit is to act as a net to ensure Welsh talent with potential, who have perhaps not quite made it as professionals yet, are retained. "We are delighted to sign someone of Gethin's ability and would like to thank Bristol for working with us on his transfer," said RGC general manager Alun Pritchard. Townsend has stressed the importance of the fixture as well as the upcoming clash with Samoa as Scotland look to lock in a top-six ranking ahead of the draw for the 2027 World Cup in Australia in December. Currently ranked seventh, his side want to avoid a similar fate to 2023 when they were placed in a group with both Ireland and South Africa and failed to progress to the knockout stages. 'This is a one-off game in terms of our tour, but there is also the bigger picture and that is the World Cup draw in November,' said Townsend. Scotland hammered Fiji 57-17 in their last meeting at Murrayfield in November but Townsend expects a much tougher encounter, with memories of his side's painful defeat in Suva in 2017 – his first loss as Scotland coach – still lingering. 'We didn't win the physical battle (in 2017), and that was really disappointing,' recalled Townsend. 'It's rare to see that happen in a Scotland team and if you have that performance you know you can never let it happen again. 'I think their biggest threat is their physicality. They're probably the biggest and most powerful men in world rugby, more so even than the South Africans. 'They combine the speed with raw power so we know they'll bring that with their ball-carrying and their big hits in defence. SRC: Joe Franchi to captain Ebbw Vale in bid for silverware
Ebbw had a strong campaign in which they lost the Super Rygbi Cymru final to Newport and the SRC Cup final to Llandovery. They will hope to use those experiences to win silverware in the coming campaign and if they do then hooker Franchi will lift it aloft. Head coach Jason Strange has confirmed that the stalwart will continue as club captain. 'It goes without saying it's a huge honour to captain my hometown club for another year," said Franchi. "The boys were a pleasure to captain last year, and our togetherness showed with us reaching two finals and keeping the SRC Shield for practically the whole season. "We've managed to retain a lot of the players from last season and I know 'Chippy' [Strange] has already started to strengthen us in key positions, which is very exciting for the coming season. I'm looking forward to getting back to work with the boys.' Franchi, whose twin Dom plays in midfield for the club, passed 200 Ebbw appearances last season. The hooker went over for a remarkable 25 tries and his exploits around the park led to him being named as the Clive Burgess Man of Steel and the Ebbw Addicts player of the year. Ebbw will defend the SRC Challenger Shield in the coming campaign after claiming it at Llandovery last October and then holding onto it throughout the regular season. The Steelmen host Aberavon on the first weekend of the season on September 14 and then head to Cardiff for an early cracker. That is followed by back-to-back games with Llandovery in a testing first month of the campaign.
