You can now check to see whether your Pixel 6a has a defective battery
And while most will have transitioned from those older models to something new, we're now starting to see just how durable these previous-generation phones really are. The Pixel 4a saw a surprise update that reduced battery life, and the Pixel 7a had issues with its battery, prompting the brand to replace it. And just last month, we got word that the Pixel 6a would also get a battery update as well.
With that said, it was reported earlier by Droid Life that Google had removed firmware for the Pixel 6a, and now, Google has made things official, announcing its Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program, which is set to officially launch on July 8 (via Droid Life). As far as the details go, Google has determined that some Pixel 6a devices will require an update in order to "reduce the risk of potential battery overheating."
Now, similar to previous actions taken by Google, this update will reduce battery capacity and charging performance, but will only affect devices that have exceeded 400 charging cycles. Again, this update will only occur if you have a device that is affected. Not all Pixel 6a phones will need this update.
Of course, this is something that is quite inconvenient, and it appears that Google is offering some compensation for the matter in the form of "a repair at no cost to you, a cash payment, or a Google Store hardware discount credit." You'll need to enter your IMEI in order on the support page to see whether you qualify.
If you want to get your battery replaced, and your device qualifies, you'll be able to head to a support center in these countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India. Those in the US and India will also have the option to mail in their device to get support.
As a Pixel owner, it's going to be disappointing to experience something like this, but at least Google is taking some steps in order to ensure that its past devices aren't exposing customers to any kind of serious issues. Furthermore, it also has a variety of solutions available that will allow affected users to get proper support.

Microsoft Authenticator Removes Password Manager, Moves Passwords to Edge
If you're a Microsoft Authenticator user, you may notice that the Passwords section is missing one of its core functions. True to its word from earlier this month, Microsoft has removed the password management portion of the app as it moves toward a password-free future. Passwords and saved addresses that were in the Authenticator app have not been deleted; rather, they've been moved to Microsoft Edge and the Microsoft account page. Microsoft says users can access their passwords and addresses directly through Microsoft Edge, which will now be the primary platform for password storage and management. To use Edge for storing and autofilling passwords, as reported by our colleagues at PCMag: On an iOS device, users can visit Settings, General, Autofill & Passwords, and finally Edge. On Android devices, the path is through Settings, General Management, Passwords & Autofill, Autofill Service, and then Edge. Microsoft has also informed users that payment data within Authenticator will be deleted starting August 1. Users can still add and save passkeys in the Authenticator app. For those who'd prefer to use a different app, exporting passwords is easy: Just open Authenticator, go to Settings, select Export Passwords, and save the file. Most other password managers let users import this file.

Google Slashes Pixel 8 Pro Price Ahead Of Pixel 10 Launch

Google has slashed the cost of the Pixel 8 Pro by $400, bringing the price down to $599. That figure is a bit of marketing because the Pixel 8 Pro hasn't been $999 for a very long time, and the company runs consecutive deals, so it's rare to pay full price for a Pixel phone. Nonetheless, $599 is a very good price for the 2023 Google flagship. The phone also comes with a Pixel Watch 2 and a free case. Alongside the 10% store credit for Google One members. The downside is the poor trade-in pricing. Historically, Google has always been behind Apple and Samsung in valuing your used phone. That changed with a recent Google U.K. deal that raised trade-in prices to heights I haven't seen before for old handsets, some of which are essentially defunct (including the embattled Pixel 6a). Here is a selection of Google U.K.'s trade-in prices three weeks ago. In comparison, the company is now paying far less for the same phones. For example, Google values the Pixel 7 Pro at $145, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max at $355, and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra at $224. AI tools like Magic Editor, Best Take, and Video Boost have made it over to last year's Google phone. Formerly exclusive Pixel 9 features, such as the Pixel Weather app, have now migrated over to the Pixel 8. Only the updated hardware separates the two phones. The Pixel 8 will likely disappear from the Google store after the Pixel 10 lands in August. This may be one of the last chances to buy the phone directly from Google, if that matters to you. Another distinct possibility is that Pixel 8 Pro prices crash (at other retailers) after it disappears from the Google Store and the Pixel 10 lands because of its age. Being two generations old used to matter pre-2024, but with five years of software updates and security patches left, the risk is reduced.
