Ncuti Gatwa quit Doctor Who for taking a ‘physical, emotional and mental' toll on him
The 32-year-old, Rwandan-Scottish actor, surprisingly departed the BBC sci-fi show earlier this year following the conclusion of his second season in the role.
During his final episode, which was broadcast on 31 May, Gatwa's Doctor regenerated and appeared to be replaced by former Doctor Who star Billie Piper.
Speaking on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show (13 July), Gatwa admitted: 'I'm getting old, and my body was tired… and I've now just started doing some ballet, so I'm making really great decisions.
He added: 'It's the most amazing job in the world, a job that any actor would dream of and – because it's so good – it's strenuous. It takes a lot out of you, physically, emotionally, mentally, and so it was time.'
Asked if he would ever come back to the show, he said: 'Never say never.'
Barbie star Gatwa has played the Doctor since David Tennant's second run as the Time Lord bi-generated in 2023.
Gatwa also addressed why he pulled out of being the UK's spokesperson at the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Speculation had arisen that his decision was connected to controversy surrounding Israel's participation in the competition.
'It all panned out very interestingly. I pulled out of it a long time before it was announced', he said. And it was announced when it was announced, I don't know why, but I was just very busy.
'Just had a lot of work schedules, a lot of press around The Roses, around Doctor (Who).'
Asked about the speculation surrounding his withdrawal, Gatwa, who did not watch this year's competition, said: 'I was just very busy.'
The actor appeared on the Sunday morning news show to discuss the West End premiere of Born With Teeth, a play that re-imagines the relationship between rival playwrights Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare.
Gatwa plays Marlowe with his Sex Education co-star Edward Bluemel as Shakespeare in the Royal Shakespeare Company production at London's Wyndham's Theatre from August.
'It's a really great story between these two huge literary icons, and it's very exciting to imagine what could have happened in a room together', he said.

While early rumors revealed that AMC would be selling tickets at its IMAX 70mm-capable Lincoln Square theater in New York, the UK-based IMAX Vanguard group suggests that the BFI IMAX in London will offer tickets too. While the Manchester Printworks in the north of England has also teased the movie, it has not indicated it will be offering tickets for sale at the time. Traveling for IMAX There are only around 30 venues worldwide that still have IMAX film projectors, and for Oppenheimer, many fans were willing to board a plane to travel to a screen that would let them see the film in Nolan's preferred format. Considering that The Odyssey is the first feature film to be captured entirely on IMAX film cameras, it seems likely airlines will be doing even better business this time round. The Odyssey will depict the story of the ancient tale attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer, which tells the tale of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon in the new film), returning home after the Trojan War. The live-action Legend of Zelda movie has cast its princess and hero
Nintendo has revealed the two lead actors for its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. Bo Bragason is playing the title character, Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is taking on the role of Link, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced on X. The performers are around the right ages for their parts — Bragason was born in 2004 while Ainsworth is 16. These are by far the biggest roles to date for both actors, but they each have plenty of experience in front of cameras. Bragason has appeared in Disney+ fantasy series Renegade Nell and BBC crime drama The Jetty, as well as the very enjoyable horror movie Censor and Final Fantasy XV. As for Ainsworth, he voiced Pinocchio in Disney's 2022 live-action remake and appeared in Mike Flanagan's Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor. Miyamoto said he is "very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen." Sony Pictures is co-producing the film with Nintendo, while Wes Ball (the Maze Runner series) is directing it. The Legend of Zelda is on track to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Ticketless Oasis fans turned away as travel warning issued for Manchester show
Steel fences have been erected at the site of Oasis's Manchester gigs and fans without a ticket have been warned not to attend the upcoming shows. The news comes as travel warnings have been issued for those travelling in the area, with another 80,000 people expected to descend on the borough on Wednesday evening, July 16. Although trams will run from Victoria station to Heaton Park every six minutes on event days, services are expected to be particularly busy with longer waits than usual, according to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). More than 70,000 concertgoers were inside the Heaton Park venue on Friday night for the Britpop band's hotly anticipated first gig in Manchester for nearly 16 years. They also played there on Saturday and will perform again on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Manchester City Council previously warned those without a ticket not to attend but people gathered to glimpse the large screens above the stage in the distance. Steel fences have now been erected around parts of the park to prevent ticketless fans watching the performances and to protect nature in the park, including pregnant cows. The council said: 'After taking stock of how the first two nights went, additional measures have now been deemed necessary and will be in place for the next three concerts. 'The erection of the fencing has a dual purpose – both to protect the environment from further damage and to dissuade people from gathering there. 'The necessary measure means the concert will no longer be visible from this area.' Heaton Park has no facilities for people without a ticket and the event area is 'double-walled with solid high security fencing all the way round', the council said. There will be 'in excess of 2,000 event security staff and police officers on duty around the site to ensure both the safety and wellbeing of ticket-holders and that only those who have tickets access the concert', it added. The fences will cover a large area of the hill within the park's cattle field, which is being developed as a new woodland area with around 300 young trees planted. The measures also aim to protect pregnant and nursing cows and a bull in the field. John Hacking, the council's executive member for employment, skills and leisure, said in his statement: 'The steps being taken ahead of the next concert regretfully mean the distant view of the large screens behind the event stage will no longer be there. 'Unfortunately our hand has been forced in having to put these additional measures in place to protect the very recent extensive planting of young trees in that location as we try to establish a new woodland area in the park, and the wellbeing of our cattle herd in the field, as well as to keep people in the park safe. 'Our advice to music fans who don't have tickets for the concerts is to head into the city centre instead. 'The whole city is going all out to celebrate and help everyone have a good time. 'We've got some fantastic things going on with a real party atmosphere for everyone to enjoy, whether they've got tickets for the Oasis gigs or not.' The five sold-out Manchester shows follow the band's first comeback gigs in Cardiff last week. Oasis will then visit London's Wembley Stadium, Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium and Dublin's Croke Park throughout July, August and September. Their reunion announcement came after Noel Gallagher quit the band, saying he 'simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer', after a backstage brawl at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris in 2009. The brothers announced the Oasis Live '25 tour last August. While many fans were thrilled, some were outraged after some standard tickets in the UK and Ireland jumped from £148 to £355. The controversy prompted the Government and the UK's competition watchdog to pledge to look at the use of dynamic pricing.
