Japan rubber futures rise on Thai flood concerns, weak demand caps gains

Japanese rubber futures rebounded on Wednesday, fuelled by supply shortage fears after top producer Thailand warned of possible flash floods, although sluggish global demand capped gains.
The Osaka Exchange (OSE) rubber contract for December delivery ended daytime trade up 3.5 yen, or 1.1%, at 320.5 yen ($2.16) per kg.
The rubber contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for September delivery climbed 80 yuan, or 0.55%, to 14,500 yuan ($2,020.31) per metric ton.
The most-active August butadiene rubber contract on the SHFE fell 65 yuan, or 0.56%, to 11,525 yuan ($1,605.80) per ton.
Thailand's meteorological agency warned of heavy rains and accumulations that may cause flash floods and overflows from July 19-21.
The market is currently paying attention to the Thai flood warning, said Chinese broker Hexun Futures.

The greenback strengthened to 148.91 yen per dollar after reaching a 3-1/2-month peak earlier in the session.
A weaker Japanese currency makes yen-denominated assets more affordable to overseas buyers.
Oil prices rose on expectations of steady demand in the U.S. and China.
Natural rubber often takes direction from oil prices as it competes for market share with synthetic rubber, which is made from crude oil.
Amidst the peak production season across rubber-producing countries, as well as damp international demand, there could be some cap to the upside, said Farah Miller, founder of independent rubber-focused firm Helixtap Technologies.
Rubber crops usually undergo a season of low production from February to May, before a peak harvesting period that lasts until September.
The front-month rubber contract on Singapore Exchange's SICOM platform for August delivery last traded at 167.3 U.S. cents per kg, up 0.7%.

CPEC framework: PCJCCI vows to strengthen institutional linkages

LAHORE: The Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional linkages aimed at enhancing industrial cooperation and promoting bilateral economic progress under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. Nazir Hussain, President PCJCCI, emphasized that PCJCCI is fully aligned with the broader vision of industrial development and stands ready to act as a dynamic platform for fostering Pakistan-China collaboration. President PCJCCI said that there is a dire need to establish dedicated 'China Desks' at various public organizations across Pakistan. These desks would act as centralized facilitation points to provide Chinese investors and enterprises with streamlined access to regulatory support, project guidance, and business services. Having China Desks embedded within public institutions will significantly improve investor confidence, reduce procedural delays, and align stakeholders around shared industrial goals. Brig Mansoor Saeed Sheikh (Retd), Senior Vice President PCJCCI said that we aim to integrate private-sector strengths with enabling policy frameworks. This will not only attract greater Chinese investment but also support industrial modernization across key sectors in Pakistan. He further noted that PCJCCI will play a proactive role in facilitating access to Chinese green technologies and supporting eco-industrial transformation in the country. Zafar Iqbal, Vice President PCJCCI, highlighted the longstanding industrial partnership between Pakistan and China and said that we believe in enhancing practical linkages that lead to innovation, value addition, and long-term economic impact. Joint ventures between Pakistani and Chinese companies will be encouraged in sectors such as engineering, agro-processing, renewable energy, and electric vehicles. Innovation hubs and pilot industrial projects will also be explored. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI stated that Coordination and institutional synergy are key to driving progress. PCJCCI is working toward launching joint working groups, policy roundtables, and industrial matchmaking sessions. The PCJCCI continues to serve as a vital bridge between Pakistani industries and Chinese enterprises, with a focus on enabling investment, promoting technology transfer, and enhancing competitiveness in strategic sectors. The chamber remains committed to facilitating structured dialogue, business matchmaking, and project development that will contribute to Pakistan's sustainable industrial growth and regional economic integration. PM visits NEOC

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday warned that Pakistan is facing extraordinary conditions due to recent cloudbursts and called for urgent preparedness to deal with increasingly extreme weather events. During a visit to the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), Sharif said forecasts indicated the risk of further cloudbursts and stressed the need for immediate action. 'We must begin preparations now,' the prime minister said, urging authorities to adopt proactive strategies to address the growing risks posed by intensified monsoon activity. Sharif pledged full federal support to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial governments to ensure integrated planning and early response measures. 'This year's experience highlights the importance of a coordinated response. Federal and provincial governments must work together to ensure readiness,' he added. The NDMA officials briefed the prime minister, stating that the 2025 monsoon season has been 60 to 70 percent more severe than the previous year. Three major rain spells have already occurred, they added, resulting in at least 178 fatalities and more than 500 injuries, largely in lower Punjab, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The NDMA expects four more significant weather events by mid-August, with the next system forecast between 21 and 28 July. Authorities are monitoring flood-prone regions closely, with stagnant water reported in several low-lying areas. Sharif approved the creation of a model disaster response unit in Islamabad and ordered the deployment of a technical team to investigate a recent incident involving tourists in the Swat River. He also endorsed the establishment of a Centre of Excellence within the NEOC and encouraged deeper collaboration with Chinese counterparts under the Belt and Road Initiative. 'This is both a test and an opportunity for Pakistan to build resilience,' the prime minister said, calling for greater investment in disaster-proof infrastructure and enhanced preparedness in sectors such as agriculture. Sharif expressed appreciation for the efforts of provincial governments, particularly Punjab's administration under his niece Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, for what he described as effective disaster management that helped mitigate losses. He extended condolences to the families of those killed and assured continued support for affected communities. The prime minister also directed the Ministry of Information to intensify public awareness campaigns on disaster preparedness through all available media platforms. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Asian currencies downbeat against dollar

BENGALURU: Equities in emerging Asia advanced on Thursday, lifted by recent US trade deals with Vietnam and Indonesia and rising expectations that central banks across the region will adopt a more dovish monetary policy stance. Singapore's FTSE Straits Times Index notched a record high for the ninth straight session, marking its longest winning streak since early 2014, underscoring investor confidence in the city-state's resilience amid global trade headwinds and its favourable tariff positioning relative to peers. 'Singapore's reciprocal tariffs are not just lower than Malaysia (25%) and Vietnam (20%), but also comparable developed economies which produce high-end exports, including the EU (30%) and Japan (25%),' said Maybank analysts. Singapore ran a trade deficit with the US last year. Following stronger-than-expected growth data, Maybank analysts expect the Monetary Authority of Singapore to maintain its appreciation bias at both the July and October meetings. Both Vietnam and Indonesia have clinched trade deals with the United States before the August 1 deadline. This has raised hopes that there could be more deals coming through amid ongoing negotiations, said Christopher Wong, a currency strategist at OCBC. 'Also there remain expectations that Fed will return to easing cycle at some point later this year to next year,' Wong said. Meanwhile, recent news from both Thailand and Indonesia has helped markets lift bets on further monetary policy easing. Thailand is reportedly set to nominate Vitai Ratanakorn as its new central bank chief, a veteran banker popular for his dovish tilt. The equity benchmark in Bangkok was the top gainer among its regional peers on Thursday, rising 3.6% to its highest since late May. 'Earlier signs this week pointed to the appointment of Vitai Ratanakorn, who would have been seen as a dovish appointment and an advocate of lower rates as well as coordinated fiscal and monetary policy to revive the economy,' said analysts at Citi. Indonesia lowered interest rates on Wednesday and signalled further room for easing, pushing the equity index in Jakarta 2.2% higher over the last couple of days. Meanwhile, currency markets in Asia were on edge amid speculation over Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's future. While US President Donald Trump sought to calm nerves by stating he was 'highly unlikely' to remove Powell, the uncertainty has added a layer of volatility across global markets. Indonesia's rupiah fell to its weakest in more than three weeks, while the South Korean won hovered around its late-June lows. The Thai baht, Singapore's dollar, the Philippine peso, and the Malaysian ringgit all traded lower.
