Palmer puzzled as Trump lingers during Chelsea Club World Cup coronation
MetLife stage drama
Cole Palmer could scarcely believe his eyes at New Jersey's vast MetLife Stadium when Donald Trump refused to step aside during Chelsea's Club World Cup trophy ceremony. The United States President had watched the London side overpower Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to claim the inaugural 32-team crown. He duly handed captain Reece James the silverware, yet rather than retreat to join FIFA chief Gianni Infantino he remained centre stage, drawing a chorus of boos from sections of the 81 118 crowd.

Blues relish historic triumph
On the pitch Mauricio Pochettino's men delivered a performance of ruthless precision, Palmer striking twice to underline his rapid ascent in royal blue. Victory adds another global prize to Chelsea's bulging cabinet and offers tangible proof of progress under the Argentine. Trump's lingering presence, however, momentarily distracted players and supporters eager to savour the moment.
Players react to unexpected guest
Television cameras caught Palmer turning to James in bemusement, lips forming the question, 'What is he doing?' Speaking later the forward admitted, 'I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.' James echoed that surprise. 'They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay,' the skipper explained. 'To be honest it was quite loud. I couldn't hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.'

Presidential cameo adds intrigue
Trump eventually shuffled behind the jubilant squad once Infantino coaxed him away, though his brief half-time interview with DAZN kept the spotlight firmly on the White House visitor. 'I am having a really great time. Tremendous sport,' he declared. While Palmer and Chelsea bask in global glory, the curious cameo ensured Trump also left his imprint on an evening already destined for club folklore.

Shane van Gisbergen 'Managed the Best He Could' Despite Issues in Historic NASCAR Cup Win

Shane van Gisbergen 'Managed the Best He Could' Despite Issues in Historic NASCAR Cup Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following his second-place finish in Saturday's Xfinity Series race, Shane van Gisbergen rose to the top in the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday afternoon. He started from the front to seal the pole position in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway, winning three straight road/street course races. Advertisement Despite finishing second in Stage 1, the Kiwi driver won Stage 2 with short pit stops to save his track position. He had to survive three cautions and late-race restarts to seal the win, extending his status as the Cup Series' winningest foreign-born driver. Ultimately, he advanced to third on the current Playoff grid with 17 playoff points. Shane Van Gisbergen during driver introductions for the Duels at Casey-Imagn Images Speaking in a post-race interview, Shane van Gisbergen revealed that his #88 Chevrolet ZL1 faced some rear grip issues during his pole-grabbing qualifying run. However, its handling became much more manageable during the official Cup race at Sonoma. "As soon as I took off—five laps in—I'm like, 'Ah, this thing's night and day better.'" van Gisbergen said. "Yesterday we were fast, but it was so loose… we still struggled with the rears, but night and day better than yesterday. Advertisement "I was complaining in the first stage, but Stephen and Josh kept telling me others were saying the same stuff. So, you just had to tell yourself everyone's got the same issues and try to manage it the best you could." Comparing NASCAR to Supercars, he admitted that NASCAR races are more difficult to win due to their chaotic and unpredictable nature, even with the fastest car. "These races are really hard to win," said SVG. "Even though we had the fastest car today, it's very rare in NASCAR for the fastest car to win the race. There's so much stuff that happens—those late-race restarts. Just to execute, make the most of it… Really, really cool." Advertisement "It ranks up there. These races are really hard to win, but luckily, a great car, great team, makes a big difference." Despite facing grip issues and late restarts, the three-time Supercars champion secured two NASCAR records from Jeff Gordon. His third straight road/street course race from pole position tied the feat of the former racer from 1998 and 1999. As a Sonoma winner, his 97 laps led even broke Gordon's mark of 92 set in 2004. On top of all this, he became the fastest Cup driver to grab four victories since Parnelli Jones won at Riverside in 1967. With eyes set on eclipsing more records, the New Zealander will now take a victory shot at the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 race. The Cup Series race falls on July 20 at Dover Motor Speedway with six races remaining in the regular season. CBS Sports says Nick Saban would love to make his comeback at Florida State so he can fire Gus Malzahn

Greg McElroy raised eyebrows across college football this week when he shared a rumor that Nick Saban might not be finished with coaching just yet. On the McElroy & Cubelic show the former Alabama quarterback said someone he trusts told him that Saban — who retired from Alabama in 2024 — could potentially return to the sidelines. Advertisement 'A very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around, and just really, really admire — they seem to think Nick Saban is not done coaching,' McElroy said. 'He's pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again.' While that's far from confirmation of anything, it's enough to spark widespread speculation — including from CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli, who floated Florida State as a potential fit. Who's up for watching Nick Saban restore a fallen giant to glory? Think of the storyline. The man whose program kept Florida State out of the College Football Playoff two years ago, causing the Seminoles to descend into such a deep depression that they convinced themselves D.J. Uiagelelei was the solution to their problems, offered an apology by offering to save them. I'm getting tears in my eyes just thinking about it. What a great man Saban would be to take on this charity case. We know the program can compete for national titles, and the turnaround probably wouldn't take too much time considering the wiggle room offered by the ACC, where the only true threats are Clemson and Miami (and considering Miami has never won the league, are they truly a threat?). My concern here would be financial. How much money would the 'Noles have given the ACC's financial situation and the buyout they'd have to pay to make Mike Norvell go away? Also, a fun little side effect if this did happen: Saban would get the chance to officially fire Gus Malzahn. You know there's part of him who would appreciate that after some of those Iron Bowl tussles. - Tom Fornelli, CBS Sports Fornelli's jab references Malzahn's success against Saban while at Auburn — where Malzahn was 3-5 against Alabama, including the infamous 'Kick Six' win in 2013. If Saban were to actually take the Seminoles job, it would set up a bizarre, but entertaining scenario. For now, Florida State remains committed to Mike Norvell, who is entering his sixth season in Tallahassee. But after a 2–10 campaign in 2024 — one of the worst in program history — his job security has taken a serious hit. Norvell owns a 33–27 overall record, with only two winning seasons to date. Advertisement It's all hypothetical, of course, and not everyone believes a return is realistic. 'I don't believe that Nick Saban is going to come back to college football until there's a firm set of rules, which is not going to happen before he turns 80, probably,' On3's Andy Staples said. Still, with McElroy's comments and Fornelli's wild but oddly logical theory, the door to a Saban return — especially at a place like Florida State — can't be ruled out. Pistons Legend Given High All-Time Ranking Despite Being 'Overlooked'

Pistons Legend Given High All-Time Ranking Despite Being 'Overlooked' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the NBA offseason in full swing as the Summer League has kicked off and teams still looking at the free agent and trade markets to upgrade their roster, it has allowed the media to once again dive into one of the most heated debates in sports. Advertisement That would be the greatest players in NBA history list as Bleacher Report's NBA staff released their top 100 all-time list on Monday. NBA great Isiah ThomasKyle Terada-Imagn Images Among the players who made the list was Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas, for obvious reasons. Bleacher Report ranked Thomas No. 27 on the all-time list and mentioned how he could be higher due to how overlooked he has been. 'Isiah Thomas is the player most often considered the overlooked greatest-of-all-time point guard,' Bleacher Report's NBA staff wrote. 'Thomas was the face of the Bad Boys Detroit Pistons, the nucleus of players who actually served as a Michael Jordan foil. That carries weight.' Advertisement Of course, Thomas is overlooked by many players, especially at the point guard position, like both Magic Johnson and Stephen Curry, both of whom were ahead of him on Bleacher Report's list. Despite this, there is no doubt that Thomas is one of the greatest point guards the NBA has ever seen and he is also one of, if not, the best Pistons player of all time. Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas (11)MPS-Imagn Images During his 13 seasons, all of which came in Detroit, Thomas won two championships, one Finals MVP and was also a 12-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection. Thomas and the Bad Boy Pistons were also known for their toughness and they were one of the only teams to challenge Jordan and the Bulls during their heyday. Advertisement Despite this, Thomas is still overshadowed by the other great point guards in league history, along with Jordan and Scottie Pippen due to the era that he played in, though he is one of the best guards in league history due to his skillset on the court.
