Abg Jo: Kuching to be more vibrant with comprehensive infrastructure transformation
KUCHING (April 22): Kuching will be more vibrant within the next few years with comprehensive infrastructure transformation and modern waste management system projects, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The Premier said various development projects are being implemented and will be implemented through comprehensive planning, including the latest transport technology and restructuring the city's management system.
'We are upgrading the infrastructure as explained by the (Kuching North) Datuk Bandar (Datuk Hilmy Othman), including roads and modern public transport systems such as ART (Autonomous Rapid Transit). All of this requires careful planning and comprehensive implementation,' he said at the Kuching North City Commission's (DBKU) Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri 2025 last night.
'The mayors, elected representatives, and community are to work together to ensure that Kuching remains vibrant, modernised, and having a multicultural society with people living in peace and harmony.'
He cited several major projects currently underway, such as the development of an underpass near the Darul Hana mosque at Jalan Tun Salahuddin; the upgrading of the road to a dual carriageway from the roundabout near the Yayasan Sarawak Complex to the Damai resort area; and the construction of dedicated ART lanes to Damai, which has been approved and will begin this year.
In addition, he said a new bridge will be constructed across Sungai Santubong to connect the Damai, Buntal, and Bako areas, which is expected to open new housing areas and promote local economic growth.
'In (Demak Laut assemblyman) Datuk Hazland (Abang) Hipni's area, we are building a bridge in Sejingkat that will connect Kampung Beliong, in addition to upgrading the surrounding infrastructure,' he said, explaining that it would involve connecting Tanjong Embang, where the new international airport will be built.
In the context of solid waste management, he said the state government has decided to use modern incinerator technology, as part of the 'waste to energy' approach that will cover two main zones – the Southern Zone from Kuching to Betong and the Northern Zone from Sibu to Miri.
'This is a big investment, but it is important for the sustainability of our city. (Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment) Datuk Len Talif Salleh will lead the implementation of this project,' Abang Johari said.
In Satok, his former constituency, Abang Johari said the unique Bintangor Bridge will improve the landscape of Kampung Masjid and Jalan Haji Taha, while the development of the Kuching Waterfront extension from the Bintangor Bridge to Satok Bridge has the potential to become the longest waterfront in the country.
On plans to revive the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHE) initiative, he said it will strengthen the preservation of historical areas and cultural heritage in Kuching.
He said the focus will be the restoration of Rumah Batu in the Kuching Division Mosque area.
'Recently, I was invited by the heirs of Rumah Batu (residence of Datu Bandar Abang Muhammad Kassim Datu Bandar Abang Bolhassan), who expressed their intention to hand over the building to a waqaf trust.
'If this becomes a reality, God willing, we will be able to further beautify the area around the Divisional Mosque,' he said.
He added the redevelopment of the area would also complement the development project in Padang Pasir, which will be the main location of the ART station in future.

'Datuk' remanded in RM75mil money laundering probe
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a company director bearing the title "Datuk", suspected of involvement in money laundering activities amounting to approximately RM75 million. A four-day remand order, until July 6, was issued by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin following an application by the MACC at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court earlier this morning. According to sources, the male suspect, in his 50s, was detained at about 4pm yesterday when he presented himself at the MACC headquarters to give a statement. "The suspect is believed to have committed the offence in 2012, involving the approval of RM400 million in loan financing for a fibre network development project. "Initial investigations suggest that RM75 million from the amount was channelled to a company owned by the suspect," the source said. On June 30, MACC's Special Operations Division carried out raids at four separate locations, including the suspect's residence and office in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. "During the operation, the MACC froze 12 bank accounts, both personal and corporate, estimated to contain about RM400,000," the source added. Meanwhile, MACC Special Operations Division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, when contacted, confirmed the suspect's arrest. The case is being investigated under offences related to the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLA) 2001.

Malaysia succeeds in attracting RM8.13b potential investments from Italy
ROME: Potential investments worth RM8.13 billion have been achieved through the Malaysia-Italy economic cooperation roundtable meeting and meetings with companies here, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The roundtable meeting involved the participation of 41 Italian companies and agencies, comprising 23 companies from the manufacturing sector, nine companies from the service sector, two companies from the trade sector as well as five government agencies and two industrial organisations. 'The potential investments achieved through these two meetings are worth RM8.13 billion in the petrochemical, machinery and equipment, electrical and electronics, and oil and gas services and equipment sectors,' he said at a press conference at the end of his visit to Rome, Italy. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the potential exports generated were worth RM425 million for oleochemical products, renewable energy, biofuel feedstocks, animal feed additives and food. The roundtable meeting allowed potential companies in Italy an opportunity to express their desire to collaborate with Malaysian companies in various sectors such as high-tech manufacturing, renewable energy, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. Meanwhile, Anwar said that in a bilateral meeting with his counterpart Giorgia Meloni, Rome and Putrajaya would increase cooperation in the energy, solar, geothermal and hydrogen sectors. Among the collaborations are the Petronas and Eni SpA joint venture in Pengerang, Johor in the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector; Perodua and Magna Styer for electric vehicle batteries; and collaboration and investment in the modernisation of the electricity grid, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). Company director detained for RM75m money laundering in fibre project
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has secured a four-day remand order against a company director with the title 'Datuk' for suspected money laundering involving RM75 million. The case is tied to a fibre network development project. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted the remand until July 6 following the suspect's arrest at the MACC headquarters yesterday. The man, in his 50s, is accused of channelling funds from a RM400 million loan to his own company in 2012. A MACC source revealed that the arrest followed Op Fibre, a special operation conducted on June 30. Raids at four locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur led to the freezing of 12 bank accounts worth RM400,000. Senior Director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the case is being probed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
