AJK govt 'failed to shoulder' Kashmir cause: Gilani
These views were expressed by Dr Syed Nazir Gilani, chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights, in a special conversation with this correspondent here on Sunday.
He noted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were the primary party in the plebiscite, with Pakistan as the second party. He added that the 1974 Act, essentially amounted to the annexation of AJK to Pakistan.
Unfortunately, the AJK government has "miserably failed" to extend this annexation to the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), he added.
Dr Gilani argued that if the AJK government had succeeded in uniting people from all segments in IIOJK, particularly Kashmiri Pandits, Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists, around the demand for the right to self-determination, it would have facilitated the annexation of the entire Jammu and Kashmir region to Pakistan through a vote.
This, in turn, would have expanded Pakistan's influence among Kashmiris and been reflected in the plebiscite with a vote in Pakistan's favour.
However, he maintained that the AJK government not only failed to fulfil its responsibilities regarding the freedom of IIOJK, but also fell short in expanding the scope of the Kashmiris' affiliation with Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has emphatically stated that there is no change in its policy or stance on Jammu and Kashmir dispute and different allusions about the statement of the Deputy Prime Minister's remarks on Jammu and Kashmir are baseless and uncalled for. 'Pakistan's stance on the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIoJK) remains consistent and in line with the relevant UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. Pakistan and India maintain embassies in each other's countries, operating with reduced diplomatic strength, he said, adding the Pak-India DGMOs remain in contact, though no substantial progress has been made beyond existing engagements. To another question, Ambassador Khan revealed the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) is a terrorist organisation, and evidence indicates Indian state-sponsorship of its activities. However, he clarified that there is no confirmation regarding Israeli involvement in Balochistan's insurgency. Pakistan is committed to promoting diplomatic solutions to regional issues, including those involving Iran. In this regard, the deputy prime minister recently held a conversation with his Iranian counterpart, during which bilateral matters were discussed, he remarked. Furthermore, the spokesperson said Pakistan categorically rejects the baseless assertions and provocative claims made by the Indian leaders during the Lok Sabha debate on the so-called 'Operation Sindoor.' These statements reflect a dangerous tendency to distort facts, justify aggression, and glorify conflict for domestic consumption. The world knows that India attacked Pakistan without any verifiable evidence or a credible investigation into the Pahalgam attack. During the intervening night of 6 and 7 May 2025, India's targeting of the alleged terrorist infrastructure resulted actually in the martyrdom of innocent men, women, and children. India failed to achieve any of its strategic objectives. On the other hand, Pakistan's resounding success in neutralising the Indian fighter jets and military targets is an indisputable fact. The Indian narrative of an alleged 'nuclear blackmail' by Pakistan is a misleading and self-serving construct, and an attempt to veil its own escalatory impulses while shifting blame onto Pakistan. Shehbaz vows relief after monsoon havoc

Briefing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif about the devastation caused by the torrential rains in different parts of the country, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik said more than 1,600 homes have been completely destroyed, and 376 livestock lost due to the severe weather. Earlier, the prime minister reaffirmed the support of the federal government to ensure relief and recovery in the monsoon devastation affected regions of Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The prime minister chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the human and material losses caused by the ongoing monsoon season, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The session focused on immediate relief efforts, future preparedness, and federal support to the affected regions, a Prime Minister's Office news release said. In his remarks, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage inflicted by torrential rains across the country, especially in GB and AJK. He reiterated the federal government's unwavering solidarity with the regional governments and the affected people. "The federal government stands shoulder to shoulder with the administrations and citizens of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir in this hour of grief," the prime minister stated. "I will soon visit Gilgit-Baltistan to express solidarity with the victims, and a comprehensive federal relief package will be announced to support recovery and rehabilitation efforts," he added. The prime minister issued special directives to all federal agencies to collaborate closely with regional authorities to conduct damage assessments and expedite relief measures. He stressed the need to prioritize life-saving interventions and safeguard both human lives and property. Highlighting the need for better disaster preparedness, the prime minister ordered an urgent overhaul of the early warning system run by the Pakistan Meteorological Department to make it more proactive and effective. He also directed the concerned departments to restore and repair road networks and communication infrastructure on an emergency basis to ensure timely aid delivery and mobility in affected areas. The prime minister emphasized a coordinated and rapid response to minimize further damage and ensure that those affected receive timely assistance and rehabilitation. KSE-100 Index Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday expressed satisfaction over the landmark rise of the Pakistan Stock Exchange's KSE-100 Index, which surged past the 140,000-point level for the first time in history. Calling it a "positive reflection of investor confidence," the prime minister said the bullish trend in the stock market indicates growing trust in the government's economic policies. "The upward momentum in the stock exchange is a strong endorsement of our economic direction," he said in a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office. Chairing a high-level meeting on the flood situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), the premier said recent rains have led to tragic incidents across the country, particularly in AJK and G-B, resulting in significant human and financial losses. 'The federal government stands with the governments, administrations, and people of AJK and G-B during this difficult time,' he said, announcing that he would soon visit the flood-hit areas of G-B to express solidarity. He added a federal relief package would also be announced to compensate for the damages 'as much as possible.' He also ordered immediate restoration of communication infrastructure, particularly roads, damaged by the floods. It is pertinent to mention that the G-B government has declared 37 flood-affected areas as calamity-hit zones and imposed an emergency to manage the crisis. Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik briefed the meeting on the nationwide impact of the monsoon season and upcoming weather forecasts for the region. More than 1,600 homes have been completely destroyed, while 376 livestock deaths have also been reported. He warned that rivers and streams were experiencing severe pressure due to continuous rainfall. Low-level flooding is anticipated in Tarbela, Chashma, Taunsa, and Kalabagh, while medium-level flooding is likely at Marala and Guddu on the Chenab River. Lt Gen Malik further cautioned that the monsoon season was expected to intensify towards the end of the month. 'NDMA is undertaking comprehensive preparations to ensure that effective preventive and relief measures are in place,' he told the meeting.
