PU security chief, DSW officials return; fact-finding report submitted
Those returning include dean student welfare (DSW) Prof Amit Chauhan, DSW (Women) Prof Simrit Kahlon, Associate DSW Prof Naresh, and chief of university security Vikram Singh. While the DSW team has resumed office, Singh is expected to return after about a week — once new standard operating procedures (SOPs) on security are finalised.
To bridge the gap between campus security and the student community, and to improve real-time coordination during student events, the vice-chancellor has appointed Prof Dinesh Kumar Bishnoi from the department of laws as the new faculty incharge of security. The move is aimed at ensuring that concerns related to safety, discipline, and student conduct are addressed more promptly.
Aditya Thakur, a second-year engineering student, died after being stabbed during a crowded concert of Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma on March 28. The incident, involving outsiders, triggered outrage over the lack of safety measures and prompted dual inquiries—one by the university and another ordered by the deputy commissioner, led by the SDM.

According to sources, the committee also flagged the need for improved coordination among senior university officials. A university source said the panel had found signs of internal friction and advised structural clarity.
Vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig said, "We are committed to doing everything necessary to improve student safety. The committee's recommendations will be implemented in full spirit. With the DSW office back in place, we can now better handle upcoming student activities like farewells and admissions, where students were facing inconvenience."
The SDM-led inquiry ordered by the Deputy Commissioner on April 1 had initially been given a two-week deadline, but nearly a month later, the report is still awaited. As the university begins to act on its internal findings, focus will also remain on the outcome of the official administrative probe and whether it prompts further accountability.
BOX- Recommendations

• Mandatory ambulances with medical staff and driver at large student gatherings

Trafficking ring busted on Vivek Exp; 27 girls rescued & 5 held
1 2 Guwahati: The Railway Protection Force (RPF), in collaboration with the Government Railway Police (GRP), successfully rescued 27 girls, including three minors, from the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express at New Tinsukia junction, Assam. The operation also led to the arrest of five suspected traffickers, who were allegedly operating under the guise of a private NGO. The suspects, identified as Hemanta Saikia, Mitali Bailong, Swapna Hazarika, Pranjali Baruah, and Jitu Dutta, all hail from Tinsukia. They were apprehended and presented before a local court on Friday. The victims were reportedly being trafficked to Tamil Nadu and intercepted during a routine security check ahead of Independence Day, an RPF official from the New Tinsukia division said on Friday. The incident unfolded on Wednesday night at Dibrugarh railway station when RPF personnel noticed a suspiciously large group of young women traveling together. Upon questioning, the group claimed they were offered jobs at a private company in Tamil Nadu. However, discrepancies between the company list and the passenger list prompted immediate action, leading to their de-boarding at Tinsukia, the officer said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why enterprise networks need both reach and resilience NetworkWorld | Tata Communications Undo Most of the rescued women, in their twenties, belong to the tea garden communities and local Assamese families from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. Alarmingly, they had been taken without parental consent. Authorities have arranged immediate shelter for the minors and are working to reunite them with their families. GRP officer-in-charge Probhat Saikia confirmed ongoing legal proceedings and investigations aimed at dismantling the broader trafficking network. This operation is part of a larger initiative to combat human trafficking and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals in the northeast, particularly in high-risk transit zones like railway stations.

B'deshi miscreants attack BSF, farmers in Cachar; 3 injured
Silchar: In a brazen cross-border incursion, a group of Bangladeshi miscreants allegedly attacked BSF personnel and Indian farmers near the international border in Assam's Cachar district late Thursday afternoon, leaving three injured, including a BSF jawan. The incident took place near the Kinnokhal BSF outpost in Katigorah, close to the Bangladesh border, amid heavy rainfall. According to sources, the assailants entered Indian territory and attempted to steal iron materials meant for repairing the barbed wire fencing along the border. BSF personnel stationed at the outpost intervened, leading to a confrontation. As the jawans tried to apprehend the two intruders, eight to ten more miscreants reportedly crossed over from the Bangladesh side, armed with sharp weapons, and launched an attack on the BSF team and two local farmers who rushed to help. "A BSF jawan sustained a deep cut on his hand after being struck with a spade. His service rifle was also damaged during the scuffle," a source said. The injured jawan was taken to Katigorah Model Hospital, where he received three stitches. The two injured civilians — identified as Pabitramohan Das (66) and Nishitranjan Deb (50) — were working on their farmland located outside the fencing but within Indian territory with BSF's permission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Das suffered a partially severed left thumb, while Deb was hit on his hand with a stick. "They were aggressive and seemed well-prepared. This wasn't just a petty theft — it looked like a planned assault," said Nishitranjan Deb. The BSF is yet to issue an official statement, but the officer-in-charge of Katigorah police station, Joseph V Kevum, confirmed the incident and said probe is underway. The violent intrusion has triggered panic among residents of border villages in Cachar, which shares a 32-km border with Bangladesh. Locals allege that Bangladeshi miscreants frequently attempt to steal crops and construction materials from Indian territory, particularly in areas beyond the border fencing. "Such incidents are not new, but this level of violence is alarming," said a villager from Katigorah. Many believe that the BSF's recent crackdown on illegal cross-border activities may have provoked Thursday's attack. Security has been stepped up in the area and additional forces have been deployed to prevent further escalation. Authorities are also in touch with their counterparts across the border through flag meetings to raise the issue formally.
