About 85% of Japan households expect prices to rise a year from now, BOJ says

Reuters5 hours ago
TOKYO, July 14 (Reuters) - About 85% of Japanese households expect prices to rise a year from now, a quarterly central bank survey showed on Monday.
The figure compared with 86.7% in the previous survey in March, the Bank of Japan said.
The poll also showed 83.1% of households expect prices to rise five years from now, compared with 83.5% in the March survey, the central bank said.
The data highlight changing public perceptions on future price moves in once deflation-prone Japan, as companies continue to pass on rising raw material costs through price hikes.
The BOJ will consider revising up this month its inflation forecast for the current fiscal year, reflecting persistent rises in rice and broader food costs, sources have told Reuters.

India wants to limit temperature settings on air conditioners to save on energy

India 's government is proposing a new rule to limit the lowest temperature setting on new air conditioners to 20C, aiming to conserve electricity in the country's rapidly growing AC market. The initiative seeks to curb the significant energy consumption by air conditioners, which are major contributors to India's peak electricity demand and greenhouse gas emissions, with potential power shortages anticipated by next year. While the power minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, stated the rule would take effect soon, the proposal has received mixed reactions from the public in India's hot cities. Energy experts suggest that while the temperature limit is a positive step, mandating more energy-efficient AC units would yield greater savings and address the issue more effectively. India faces the challenge of replacing an estimated 80 million older, inefficient air conditioners, many of which would be banned in other countries due to their high energy consumption.

Swedish headline 2.8% in June, final Statistics Office data shows

STOCKHOLM, July 14 (Reuters) - Swedish headline consumer prices rose 0.5% in June from the previous month and were up 2.8% from the same month a year earlier, final figures from the statistics office (SCB) showed on Monday. Stripping out volatile energy prices, a measure the Riksbank is looking at closely, inflation was 3.3% compared to June 2024. The central bank targets 2 percent CPIF inflation. Analysts had forecast headline inflation of 2.9% year-year-on-year and 3.3% stripping out energy prices, in line with flash figures released last week. Flash inflation had come in well above forecasts by both the Riksbank and analysts, casting doubt on whether the central bank will cut rates again this year. Cutting to 2.00% in June, the Riksbank said the outlook for inflation meant it might be possible to ease policy again before the end of the year to boost stalled growth.
