US nuclear submarine arrives in Brisbane
On Sunday, the US Navy Ohio-class submarine USS Ohio arrived in Brisbane for a historic scheduled port visit mooring alongside the submarine tender (repair ship) USS Frank Cable, which pulled in on Saturday.
It is the first Ohio-class submarine to pull into Brisbane, arriving ahead of the upcoming 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day on August 15, which marks the end of World War II in the Pacific.
The celebration marks decades of shared US-Australian history and co-operation. During World War II, Brisbane served as a major submarine hub, hosting more than 70 US submarines and three submarine tenders.
During the port visit, Ohio will host tours and engagements for distinguished visitors, national and local community leaders.
The visit also coincides with the current war games exercise Talisman Sabre in the Northern Territory involving Australian, US and Canadian military.
The super carrier USS America also recently docked in Brisbane, and Brisbane Times was granted a tour of the ship.

Hopes Margot Robbie will star in Queensland film before Brisbane Olympics
By
A campaign is under way in Queensland to bring Hollywood heavyweight Margot Robbie home for a special Olympics Games project.
Screen Queensland has approached the Barbie star with a proposal to return home and make a film to put the state on the map ahead of the Brisbane 2032 games.
The actress was born in Dalby in the Western Downs and raised on the Gold Coast, and has visited her home state in previous years for holidays. She also returned to the Gold Coast for work last year to accept the Trailblazer Award at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards on the Gold Coast.
With a busy schedule, film industry bosses believe it will take the right project to get the actress back to the state.
The industry believes the Brisbane 2032 games presents the opportunity to put the state's film industry front and centre globally.
Screen Queensland has proposed the actresses' production company LuckyChap Entertainment produce the film.

Here's what's making news further afield this morning:
The European Union has ended months of dispute with US President Donald Trump by accepting a deal that imposes 15 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in exports. The deal was unveiled in Scotland on Sunday during Trump's visit to his golf estates, as hundreds of protesters gathered to object to his visit.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made it clear he will not be rushed into recognising Palestinian statehood, despite energetic lobbying by French President Emmanuel Macron and rising demands from the Labor Party's rank-and-file.
Australians are voicing a strong desire for the country to assert more independence from the United States amid Donald Trump's turbulent presidency, with most voters saying they do not blame Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for failing to secure a meeting with the US President.
The architect of Australia's current research integrity system says it is no longer fit for purpose and has called for the establishment of an independent scientific watchdog.
And in sport, Australian Oscar Piastri has won the Belgian Grand Prix and furthered his championship lead, while his teammate Lando Norris had to settle for second during a rain-interrupted race at Spa.

Tragedy hit America's ‘royal couple' in 1999. Now the tale's heading to TV

Twenty-six years ago last month, on a hazy summer night, a Piper Saratoga plane spiralled into the Atlantic Ocean just off Martha's Vineyard, killing all three people on board: its pilot John F. Kennedy Jr, his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and her older sister, Lauren Bessette. Within hours, then-US president Bill Clinton ordered US Navy warships to comb the area in search of wreckage, telling bristling taxpayers that the Kennedys had 'suffered much and given more'. The bodies, still strapped into their seats, were recovered five days later. It was the final chapter in a tragic family history, the early, sudden deaths enshrining the mystique of 'John-John', 38, and Carolyn, 33, in legend. He was, of course, the handsome, adored, only surviving son of a young assassinated president and his elegant wife, Jacqueline; she was the shiny-haired fashion publicist whose cool blonde beauty and distinctive look – distinctive but anonymous (she would ask for the Prada labels to be stripped from her ski-suits) – captivated style-watchers. They were the closest thing the US had to royalty; the prince and princess of Manhattan. When they married quietly in September 1996, inside a small candlelit church on Georgia's Cumberland Island with only 40 guests in attendance, her simple white slip dress spawned millions of imitations and put the name of its designer, Narciso Rodriguez, on the fashion map. Interest in the couple is reigniting with the news that mega-producer Ryan Murphy has started filming the first instalment of his new TV series, American Love Story, which will bring the Bessette-Kennedy romance to the small screen for the first time. Relative unknown Paul Kelly reportedly beat 1000 hopefuls to win the role of JFK Jr, while Sarah Pidgeon, familiar to audiences of Prime Video's The Wilds, will be Carolyn. Naomi Watts, no stranger to Murphy's TV projects, has signed on to play Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. (Interestingly, Carolyn never met her mother-in-law, who died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1994 at the age of 64.) But early stills posted by Murphy to social media in June of his two young leads in character drew sharp criticism from the dark lords of New York style. Carolyn's hair was 'too 2024', said Brad Johns, who had perfected her 'child of the beach' hue in the '90s, while The Cut 's Danya Issawi pointed to 'fast-fashion knock-offs of her high-designer style'. 'Sorry, but the wardrobe is wrong,' agreed Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo. And what was with the No. 35 Birkin? She only ever carried a No. 40. Loading Murphy had to tell everyone to just cool it. The shots were only camera tests for lighting and colour that he'd been forced to post to beat salivating paparazzi to the punch. More short videos, to be released as filming got properly under way in the northern autumn, would amply demonstrate costume designer Lou Eyrich's attention to detail. A 10-person style advisory board had already been confirmed. At the time of the couple's death, rumours of a fairytale starting to fray at the edges had begun to circulate. Was JFK Jr, still only a rookie pilot, distracted the night that he succumbed to spatial disorientation while trying to land the aircraft? The Piper Saratoga was close to its destination, but it was dark and visibility was poor.

Ozzy Osbourne's heartbreaking final text to his close pal revealed

Don't miss out on the headlines from Entertainment. Followed categories will be added to My News. Ozzy Osbourne's longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde revealed the poignant final text message he received from the late metal icon after Black Sabbath's farewell concert. 'The last text I got from Oz was saying, 'Zakky, sorry, it was like a madhouse back there. I didn't see you.' He goes, 'Thanks for everything,'' Wylde told Guitar World in an interview published Tuesday. 'It was just us talking, saying, 'I love you, buddy.' That was it.' Wylde divulged in the interview that he had expected to see Osbourne — who died on July 22 at age 76 — at some point following Black Sabbath's farewell concert in Birmingham, England, on July 5. But that never happened. Jack Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne leave after viewing tributes to the late Ozzy Osbourne from fans. Picture: Getty. The guitarist — who joined Black Sabbath in 1987 — explained that he wanted to give the Prince of Darkness a reprieve from the chaos backstage after the show. 'Everybody and their mother were in the backstage dressing room and I just wanted to give him a break,' Wylde said, noting elsewhere in the interview that their priority was 'making sure that Oz was OK.' 'It was definitely pretty amazing. Seeing Oz onstage when Sabbath got done, that's the last time I saw him,' Wylde recalled. Wylde, 58, also shared how the Black Sabbath frontman was like family to him. 'Oz was just the best. I have my father, who was a World War II veteran; and then Ozzy, who was almost like an older brother,' the guitarist told the outlet. 'There was almost a 20-year age gap between us. With our relationship, there was the fun drinking – but if I ever needed advice, I could talk to him.' Osbourne died at 76 years-old. Picture: Getty. The families were so close, in fact, that Osbourne was given a special title. 'Ozzy is the godfather of our oldest son,' Wylde said. 'Whether I was playing with him or not, if Sharon called me and my wife up and said, 'Guys, can you watch the house while we're away on a business trip?' I'd do it. It's like, 'If you need me to bring milk and eggs over, I'll do it.'' The legendary rocker died last week after battling Parkinson's disease and the effects of a 2003 quad bike accident. Ozzy's wife, Sharon Osbourne, and children announced his death in a statement obtained by Page Six. 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,' they said. 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.' Ozzy was honoured with a funeral procession in Birmingham, England, on Wednesday.
