Microsoft launches AI-based Copilot Mode in Edge browser
Copilot Mode can help carry out tasks, organize browsing into topic-based queries and compare results across all open tabs without requiring users to switch between them, Microsoft said.
The update comes at a time when tech companies have rolled out several AI-powered online search tools. Nvidia-backed startup Perplexity AI launched its Comet browser earlier this month, while Reuters reported on OpenAI's upcoming AI browser.
Rival Alphabet earlier this year launched "AI Mode", an AI-only search feature on Google, and last week reported improvements in user engagement on such features.
Microsoft said, under the new feature, users will see a page with a single input box combining chat, search and web navigation features. Copilot will also support voice navigation for browsing in Edge, the company added.
The users will also soon be able to give Copilot permission to access additional browser context, such as user history and credentials, to take more concrete actions like making bookings or managing errands.
Copilot will only be able to access browsing content when users enable it, and will provide visual cues to let users know when it is active in the background, Microsoft said.
The feature will be available for free across Copilot markets in Windows and Mac PCs for a limited time and users can choose to opt out of it through Edge settings.

Apple supplier Skyworks Solutions forecast fourth-quarter revenue and profit above Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, benefiting from steady demand for its analog chips amid economic uncertainty, sending its shares up around 10 per cent in extended trading. Demand for Skyworks' chips has remained strong, supported by their applications across industries such as automotive and mobile, even as global trade tensions raise concerns over supply chain disruptions and rising costs. "We're encouraged by the momentum in mobile and steady strength across our broad markets, driven by long-term growth trends in edge IoT, automotive and data center," CEO Phil Brace said. Skyworks designs and manufactures analog and mixed-signal chips used in wireless communication, automotive, industrial and consumer electronics. Earlier this year, the company named insider Robert Schriesheim as interim finance chief, after Mark Dentinger, who was initially set to assume the role, decided not to join. Skyworks forecast fourth-quarter revenue between $1 billion and $1.03 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $887.4 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company expects fourth-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.40, ahead of analysts' expectations of 97 cents per share. For the third quarter ended June 27, Skyworks reported revenue of $965 million, beating expectations of $940.9 million.

Snap records slowest revenue growth in over a year, hurt by ad platform glitch
Snap on Tuesday reported second-quarter revenue growth that was the slowest in more than a year, hurt by a temporary glitch in its advertising platform, sending its shares down more than 14 per cent in extended trading. The Snapchat-parent said it had reverted the error that unintentionally allowed some ads to run at much lower prices. The Santa Monica, California-based company recorded second-quarter revenue of $1.34 billion, up 8.7 per cent from last year and largely in line with estimates, but lower than the double-digit growth it was recording in the last five quarters. Snap's results came after stellar performances by rivals, including Instagram and Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Reddit. "The digital ad tailwinds that propelled Meta and Reddit to blowout quarters turned into a light breeze for Snap," said eMarketer principal analyst Jasmine Enberg. Under different circumstances, investors might have overlooked its ad platform misstep, but "there is little room for mistakes," she added. Snap's quarterly revenue was also hit by the timing of Ramadan and the termination of de minimis exemption or a duty-free import loophole in the U.S. The company said its expanded roll-out of the new ad format — Sponsored Snaps, video ads that appear in user inboxes — across the U.S. and several other global regions is helping by driving more user actions and deeper engagement with ad content. Small and medium-sized businesses were the largest contributors to ad revenue growth and its subscription service Snapchat+ remained a key driver for diversifying revenue beyond advertising. Snapchat+ subscribers rose 42 per cent to nearly 16 million for the quarter ended June 30. Daily active users rose 9 per cent to 469 million, compared with estimates of 467.9 million. The company forecast third-quarter revenue between $1.48 billion and $1.51 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.48 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Snap expects quarterly adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to be between $110 million and $135 million, above estimates of $111.9 million.

Two Chinese nationals in California accused of illegally shipping Nvidia AI chips to China

LOS ANGELES, California - Two Chinese nationals were arrested in California and charged with illegally shipping tens of millions of dollars' worth of AI chips to China, including Nvidia H100s, the US Justice Department said on Aug 5. Chuan Geng, 28, of Pasadena, and Shiwei Yang, 28, of El Monte, exported the advanced Nvidia chips and other technology to China from October 2022 through July 2025 without obtaining the required licenses from the US Commerce Department, a criminal complaint says. According to the complaint, Geng and Yang's El Monte-based company, ALX Solutions Inc, was founded in 2022, shortly after the US imposed sweeping export controls on technology to China and began to require licenses for the chips. A spokesperson for Nvidia declined comment. Over 20 shipments from ALX solutions went to shipping and freight forwarding companies in Singapore and Malaysia, which are often used as transshipment points for illegal goods to China. ALX received a US$1 million (S$1.3 million) payment from a China-based company in January 2024 and other payments from companies in Hong Kong and China, not the freight forwarding companies. Nvidia H100s are advanced chips that can be used to train large language models and for other applications, such as developing self-driving cars and medical diagnosis systems. Records show that from at least August 2023 to July 2024, ALX Solutions bought over 200 Nvidia H100 chips from San Jose, California-based server maker Super Micro Computer, declaring that the end users were in Singapore and Japan. Super Micro did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In addition to Nvidia's H100s, the pair are accused of illegally shipping Nvidia video graphics cards known as PNY GE Force RTX 4090, which also require a license for export to China. Geng and Yang appeared in US District Court in Los Angeles late Aug 4, according to the Justice Department. Geng, a permanent resident, was released on US$250,000 bond. Yang, who overstayed her visa, has a detention hearing on Aug 12. REUTERS
