Location Located in a residential complex in the shadows of the skyscrapers of Seattle's business district that hosts brands such as Amazon and Google, 1Hotel provides easy access to the main landmarks of the city. It's just a 15-minute walk to the Space Needle and to the iconic Pike Place Market, where you will find the world's first Starbucks, a must-see site for coffee lovers. The hotel is also just a 20-minute cab ride to Seattle's bustling cruise terminal, making it well-situated for passengers before or after a trip. The vibe The hotel feels fresh and new, having only opened in May after replacing and renovating the Denny Park Hotel. It is one of 14 sustainability-focused locations around the world for the 1Hotel group, yet there is a clear local approach. Guests are welcomed into the lobby by a living wall of vegetation in the shape of Washington state's Mount Rainier and a '1' monument using 575 driftwood pieces sourced from private beaches around the Puget Sound by local artist Rebecca Stigora. Nature is brought to life around the hotel with 1,142 plants across the site. Earthy tones on the walls and greenery that surround the soft white furnishings throughout the public spaces give the feel of a safari lodge, where it is easy to relax before venturing out to the urban jungle of Seattle life. Service Staff are keen to impress. The reception desk is staffed around the clock, which is useful if your flight is delayed. Check-in is quick, and a concierge will help take your bags to the room and staff are knowledgeable about the local area. Some logistics may still need ironing out – our late arrival meant the housekeeping service had understandably only finished their clean at 11pm, and we had to request a member of the guest services team to show us how to set up the sofa bed for our kids. Bed and bath The hotel has 153 rooms, including 45 suites, spread across 11 floors. Interiors feature teak wood floors, tapestry wall hangings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking city views, including of the Space Needle. Soft cotton bedding, 55-inch TVs, and bathrobes make things feel homely, while sustainable touches such as chalkboards instead of notepads and bamboo-based tissue paper underscore the eco-conscious ethos. Bathrooms are stocked with Bamford products and include both walk-in rain showers and separate tubs. A wooden coin also encourages guests to participate in the '1 Less Thing' program, letting them donate unwanted clothes to local charity Mary's Place. Food and drink Meals are not included in the base rate, but packages can include dining credits. Breakfast at Drift bar is worth the extra money, especially for the Tropical Blue Colada smoothie – a vibrant mix of pineapple, coconut and blue spirulina. My favorite handheld fan is less than $13 right on Amazon right now
There are very few products I test or buy that end up on my 'obsessed' list. At NBC Select, we try out a lot of products from Amazon, whether it's a stain remover, toiletry bag or a whitening toothpaste but they don't always end up being products we love. One product I'd personally file under 'best thing I've ever bought' is the Jisulife Handheld fan. As someone who is almost always hot, especially during daily commutes or errands, this fan consistently comes to the rescue during heat waves, beach trips and more. Deal of the Day Around the size of a small body spray (think Sol de Janeiro), the Jisulife handheld fan has saved me from coming home dripping in sweat many times. It has two plastic blades at the top (they're hidden when it's closed) which aren't sharp at all and run at three speeds (I find that all of them are extremely cooling). One of its best features is the inclusion of USB and USB-C ports, which I use to charge the fan itself and also power up my phone or other compatible small electronics on the go .Plus, it has a flashlight on one end that comes in handy when I'm standing at my front door searching for my keys sitting at the bottom of my bag at night. It also comes with a wrist lanyard you can loop through the top if you want to keep your hand free while holding it. Keep in mind not all fan colors are equally discounted. Since talking my co-workers' ears off about how much I love this fan, I've been able to convince NBC Select's senior manager of community engagement Rosalie Sparaco to get one, too. 'Commuting while seven months pregnant in what seems like a weekly New York City heatwave is no joke,' she says. 'This fan has been great while I'm waiting for the train, walking to the office and even when I get into work and I'm just so sweaty. The carry-on we chose was a delicious one, as it came from the Monos x Magnolia Bakery color collection that came out a few years back. Read on for the breakdown of the brand, pricing, and our review while on the road. What is Monos and how does it compare to other brands? Monos All luggage brands are not the same. Our staff here at The Post has tried a whole bunch of bags, from Away to Béis, each with something else to offer. In the case of Monos, a few things stand out. The company places value on simplicity, choice, and sustainability. The streamlined design of their luggage and bags is purposeful, explained on their site as being for the mindful traveller with a timeless approach to luggage. They also offer a few different choices for fabrics and design, but not too many as to be overwhelming. As for materials, they offer luggage made of polycarbonate as well as hybrid bags that also have aluminum for even more durability. Lastly, to address sustainability, you also need to take a look at the rest of their bags and materials. Our review Sophie Cannon Immediately after my return from an international trip, I unpacked and traded in my larger bags for something best built for a weekend away. This weekend in question was set to rain the entire time, so I was happy to see that both my Monos Carry-on and the Metro Backpack were water-resistant. Since the weekend was with my best girlfriends, I wanted to pack enough outfits and games, but also be sure to have room for anything we may bring home, and of course, have enough room in the trunk to pack it all. Starting with the Metro Backpack, I immediately fell in love with the color and material, opting for the brown vegan leather. The bag felt soft, like I like my leather to be, but the actual structure of the bag was stiff enough to stand up on its own while I packed. It also felt supportive and protective enough for my belongings, including a padded laptop sleeve and zipper pockets that felt secure. The backpack could sit both on its side in the car as well as upright when we unpacked at the rental. Sophie Cannon My favorite part of the backpack was the QuickSnap Modular Kit System, or the ability to remove the pouch on the front of the backpack and use it as a toiletry bag, tech kit, or whatever else I needed. I kept it on the bag while we drove up, but then detached it with ease when I unpacked, so it could serve as a place to keep my phones and chargers on my nightstand. The carry-on luggage already got a test drive when I packed for a Marie Kondo article, and so I knew the small bag could really fit a lot, especially when you use packing cubes and tricks.
