Markets may move in 5% range till festive season: Trideep Bhattacharya

Time of India08-06-2025
Indian equities are likely to consolidate in a narrow 5% range over the next few months as the market undergoes a phase of time correction, says
Trideep Bhattacharya
, CIO – Equities at
Edelweiss Mutual Fund
.
While macro uncertainties have eased and policy momentum has picked up, the missing link remains corporate earnings, which he expects to revive meaningfully only in the second half of FY26. Until then, Bhattacharya believes the market will hold steady, supported by improved consumption drivers and investor sentiment, but without major upside.
Edited excerpts from a chat:
How do you see the markets going ahead following the Q4 earnings season?
The markets are now close to September 2024 levels. Our earnings growth is likely to be back by the second half of FY26. And then there will be the festive season effect as well. For the next 3–4 months, earnings growth will take time to come back.
With macro uncertainties out of the way, we expect time correction in markets from here till the festive season. When we say time correction, it'll be in the range of 5%.
We've been saying since the beginning of this year that the markets have been climbing the wall of worry. In January, we didn't know where India would spend, and we didn't know what Trump would do in terms of policies. And 2024 was dominated by national elections, so earnings took a backseat. The only thing that is still missing is earnings.
Policy paralysis, which was there in 2024, has now been resolved. And in the first quarter of the calendar year, economic decision-making has started. You can see that in the form of order announcements.
For this to translate into earnings, it'll take a few quarters more—which is where the second half of FY26 hypothesis lies. So basically, the market has moved from an extremely macro-uncertain environment to one with a reasonable macro. But we are standing without the support of earnings. Till then, we might see a bit of time correction.
So you don't see the possibility of a major decline?
Not more than a 5% range. While the macro has been particularly torturous over the last 2–3 months, three or four positives have happened, which can't be ignored. Oil prices have corrected 25%, which is a big boost to consumption. Second, inflation has come off by close to 100 basis points, which will also boost the consumer's pocket.
Third, rate cuts have happened, and liquidity has been eased. And finally, in the Budget, the Finance Minister effectively gave a salary hike for urban consumers to the tune of 5–7%.
All of these make a reasonably strong case for consumption to start picking up in the second half of this year. We have a strong case for earnings coming back.
The only risk to this overall scenario is if Trump overdoes it. Then we will probably see a global recession starting with the United States, which will have global implications.
How comfortable are you with the valuations now?
Largecaps would be basically in line with, or at a 5% premium to, the 10-year average. Mid and smallcaps would be anywhere between a 17% to 25% premium to 10-year averages.
At the end of the day, we are bottom-up stock pickers and we are fine with largecap valuations. Within mid and smallcap, we advise selectivity as a strategy—in the sense that wherever there is a valuation premium, we make sure that there is an earnings growth premium that comes along with it.
Mid and smallcap stocks where growth is faltering but valuations are still high are in the penalty box. Those are the ones to avoid. And fortunately, we've been able to do so, which is why, if you look at the PEG ratios of our portfolios, it seems to suggest that we've kept a balance between valuations and growth at a steady level.
Which sectors are you particularly interested in at this stage?
At the beginning of the year, we called consumption the dark horse of 2025. We actually also launched a consumption fund in the first quarter of the year.
The second one is financials. Within them, we are bullish on
NBFCs
in particular, which are one of the rate cut beneficiaries and whose valuations are still reasonable. Earnings growth is likely to remain strong as we get into FY26.
The third area where we have been overweight is defence. The recent conflict between India and Pakistan opens up the opportunity for exports. That is something that will play out in the medium term. In the near term, valuations capture a whole bunch of positives.
And finally, with regard to IT services, this is an area where we have been underweight. But we are gradually going neutral because we think expectations are extremely reasonable right now. Valuations are around long-term averages.
If you look at it, things can get better from here. This is, of course, barring a scenario where we have a global recession.
The market doesn't seem to be very bullish on staples, as the numbers haven't been very good, but discretionary is relatively better. Would you agree?
This is the reason why we called out consumption to be the dark horse of 2025. We were positive on consumer discretionary, but not on staples. The reason staples have not done well is because they cater to mass consumption, which was hit by high inflation and interest rates.
Now inflation has started to come off, and we are seeing more rate cuts happening. This will act as a boost. A slightly better-than-expected monsoon will be positive for mass consumption.
Staples will gradually make a comeback. In the last 2–3 years, consumption has not done extremely well.
We have been saying that premiumization is a big theme, but that doesn't seem to have played out as much. Why is that?
That hasn't played out because real income growth has been lower in that segment over the last couple of years.
Urban income growth has been struggling for various reasons—jobs, inflation, etc. Our real income growth has been weak, and that's why the Budget gave tax benefits. This would mean that effectively, the net take-home salary will increase somewhere between 5–7%, which is the annual salary hike for an urban consumer.
So it effectively gives them an additional salary hike, which will hopefully boost earnings of consumption companies as we go towards the second half of this year.
Some mutual funds have been sitting on huge amounts of cash. But as a fund house, Edelweiss doesn't make cash calls. In that case, how do you deal with the problem of valuation?
The cash in our portfolios is usually less than 5%. But even within that, we've historically held lesser cash as we were not particularly negative on the market since the beginning of the year.
The overall way we manage valuation risk is by shifting our allocations across different market cap ranges. Between large, mid, and small, whichever segment offers us more valuation comfort—adjusted for growth—we are gradually moving towards that.
My two bits on cash calls is that we don't want to mix asset allocation with stock selection. Your job is stock selection, not asset allocation. Asset allocation is about how much money I should put into equities versus how much cash I should hold. That is typically best done by a distributor who knows the client's cashflow profile.

Indian delegation in US, Trump says 'we're going to have access' as trade talks progress

Trade talks between the US and India are gaining momentum as President Donald Trump signals progress on a potential trade deal, crediting his tariff policies for opening 'access' to Indian markets read more US President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that the country is making notable progress in gaining access to India's markets, attributing the breakthrough to his tough tariff policies and hinting at an outcome toward a coming trade deal. He said that his tariffs have helped the US dismantle barriers that previously hindered American businesses. 'We're going to have access into India,' Trump said, while announcing a trade agreement with Indonesia following a call with President Prabowo Subianto. 'You have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn't go in. And now we're getting access because of what we're doing with the tariffs.' We will… — ANI (@ANI) July 15, 2025 Although the White House has not released concrete information about the scope or progress of the proposed US-India trade agreement, Trump's comments point to a fresh effort to reshape America's trade ties across Asia. Moreover, a high-level team from the Ministry of Commerce and Trade is also in the US to negotiate further, as India is firm on protecting its dairy and agriculture sector. Trump pointed out that his tough tariff stance is yielding results. 'Now we're getting access,' he repeated, positioning the development as a direct outcome of his trade policies. Donald Trump has frequently insisted that a trade deal with India is almost finalized, though a few outstanding issues remain. Interestingly, experts on US-India relations suggest it's actually beneficial that Trump hasn't yet sent an official letter to New Delhi. Meanwhile, India's trade delegation, headed by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, is in Washington for scheduled talks, fueling renewed hopes for a potential agreement. Among all US trading partners facing Trump's proposed 'reciprocal tariffs,' India is the largest and stands out because, unlike the EU, South Korea, Japan, Canada, and Mexico, it has not received a formal letter from Trump threatening 25 to 35 percent tariffs starting August 1. Stocks to buy today: Trade Brains Portal recommends two stocks for 16 July

Stock Market Today: Indian equities rebounded strongly on Tuesday, 15 July, snapping a four-day losing streak as broad-based buying lifted benchmark indices. The Sensex rose 317 points to close at 82,570.91, while the Nifty 50 gained 114 points, or 0.45%, to end at 25,195.80. Mid- and small-cap stocks continued to outperform. The BSE Midcap index advanced 0.83%, while the Smallcap index added 0.95%. Against this backdrop, Trade Brains Portal has picked two stocks—one from the IT sector and another from the energy sector. Why it's recommended:Founded in 1995, Tanla Platforms Ltd. has been the top provider of Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) in India, accounting for around 35% of the market. It has led the way in mobile and digital communications innovations and is now the preferred partner for more than 2,500 businesses and their users in a variety of industries in India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, including well-known international tech firms like Google, Meta, and Truecaller. They are still growing their presence in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, with India continuing to be their main focus market, which makes up over 95% of their business. In FY25, the company reported a 2.5% YoY increase in revenue to ₹ 4,028 crore, a gross profit of ₹ 1,051 crore, and margins of 26.1%. Ebitda was ₹ 691 crore for the entire year, with an Ebitda margin of 17.2%. The profit margin was 12.6%, with a profit after tax of ₹ 507 crore. The free cash flow was ₹ 514 crore, or 101% of profit after taxes, and the earnings per share were ₹ 37.76. In order to prevent scams on their messaging platform by detecting fraud phone numbers, the company signed agreements with one of the Global Tech Majors on Wisely ATP in Q1 FY25. The company launched Wisely ATP with another top Indian bank in Q2 FY25 and was the first to introduce and execute Call to Action (CTA) whitelisting on the Trubloq platform. The company was one of the top players in the world in Q3 of FY25, delivering one billion RCS business messages in a month. The company is the first to introduce and use PE/TM binding on the Trubloq platform later in Q3. Additionally, the company's subsidiary Karix has worked with a number of partners, including Makemytrip (MMT), Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), and Axis Bank, to digitise ticketing and enhance customer engagement in various services. The company continues to work with global Internet tech giants like Google and Meta to accelerate the adoption of OTT channels in India. In FY25, their OTT channel doubled in size, and almost one-third of their 400 new customers were on new OTT channels. Risk factors:Tanla is particularly exposed to the possibility of technical failure because it works in a rapidly evolving digital environment. Because of shifting market dynamics and advancements in communication technology, existing CPaaS solutions run the real danger of becoming less competitive over time. Tanla's reputation and clientele may suffer as a result of system malfunctions and potential hacks that steal confidential customer data. Why it's recommended: One of India's top City Gas Distribution (CGD) firms, Mahanagar Gas was founded in 1995 and serves a wide range of clientele in its operating Geographical Areas (GAs) by meeting their various needs. More than 2.83 million PNG households and 1.11 million CNG vehicle users are served by its infrastructure, which includes more than 7,460 km of pipeline and 385 CNG stations. MGL has played a key role in establishing gas infrastructure and encouraging gas use among a range of consumers throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai, Urban Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, and others, for more than thirty years. Revenue for FY25 was ₹ 6,924 crore, up 10.87% from FY24's ₹ 6,245 crore, according to the company. Over the past four years, it has grown at a 34% CAGR. Ebitda was ₹ 1,510 crore, while gross profit was ₹ 2,466 crore. The gross margin was ₹ 16.51/SCM, which was more than the FY22 gross margin of ₹ 13.61/SCM. The average sales realization was ₹ 46.54/SCM, higher than FY21's ₹ 26.42/SCM. Over the past four years, PAT has grown at a 14% CAGR to reach ₹ 1,045 crore. As of FY25, ROE was 18.94%. The company wants to expand its customer base in all regions for both PNG and CNG. The market penetration of CNG will rise as more OEMs prepare to introduce CNG-based automobiles. The business intends to invest approximately ₹ 1,300 crore in FY26 and ₹ 150 crore in MGL's subsidiary, UEPL. Approximately ₹ 500 crore would be spent on PNG, including pipelines, and ₹ 300 crore will be spent on CNG. Within the next five years, 250 CNG filling stations and 180 km of steel pipeline are planned. In order to diversify into new markets or bolster its current ones, the company has made a number of acquisitions and partnerships and is growing into various energy-related subsegments. Risk factors: Delays caused by prolonged authorization procedures typically have an impact on the company's project implementation. The installation of CNG stations and an increase in pipeline infrastructure would be necessary to streamline the procedure. Also, exorbitant costs and a lack of available land make it difficult to establish new CNG stations in the company's operating areas. Indian equities opened on a strong note Tuesday, with the Nifty 50 beginning the day at 25,089.50—just 7 points above Monday's close of 25,082.30. The index hit an intraday high of 25,245.20 before settling at 25,195.80, up 113.50 points or 0.45%. On the technical front, the Nifty ended below its 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) but remained above its 50-, 100-, and 200-day EMAs. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 50.50, comfortably below the overbought zone of 70. The BSE Sensex followed a similar trajectory, opening at 82,233.16, peaking at 82,743.62, and closing at 82,570.91—up 317.45 points or 0.39%. Its RSI came in at 49.59. Like the Nifty, the Sensex closed below its 20-day EMA but held above the longer-term 50-, 100-, and 200-day EMAs. All major domestic indices ended in the green. The Nifty Auto Index led the sectoral rally, ending the day at 23,905.25, up 1.50% or 353.25 points. Stocks such as Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, and Samvardhana Motherson gained over 2%. The Nifty Healthcare Index rose 179.95 points or 1.23% to close at 14,787.65, supported by strong gains in Sun Pharma, Fortis Healthcare, and Apollo Hospitals—all of which rose more than 2%. Biocon and Syngene were top performers, advancing 2.99% each. The Nifty Pharma Index also delivered solid gains, finishing at 22,665.70, up 255.35 points or 1.14%. Sun Pharma, Biocon, and Natco Pharma all gained over 2% during the session. A broadly bullish tone was seen across Asian markets: Hang Seng (Hong Kong): +386.80 points (1.60%) to 24,590.12; Kospi (South Korea): +13.25 points (0.41%) to 3,215.28; Nikkei 225 (Japan): +218.40 points (0.55%) to 39,678.02; Shanghai Composite (China): -14.65 points (-0.42%) to 3,505.00 By 4:55pm (India time), US markets appeared relatively flat in early futures trade, with Dow Jones Futures up 17.48 points or 0.04% at 44,471.16. Pew Survey: Global views of China, Xi Jinping improve as US image declines

A new survey by the Pew Research Centre reveals a shift in global public opinion, with views of China and its leader Xi Jinping improving in several countries, while favorability toward the United States and President Donald Trump has notably on Tuesday, the survey suggests that global attitudes toward the two geopolitical superpowers are now more evenly matched than in recent years, marking a dramatic reversal from the Biden era, when international views of the US were consistently stronger than those of its latest survey of 24 countries, Pew found that the US was viewed more favourably than China in eight countries, China was viewed more favourably in seven, and the two were viewed about equally in the remainder. In particular, only 35% of respondents in 10 high - income countries — including Canada, France, Germany, and Italy-held a favourable opinion of the US, down from 51% just a year ago. Pew surveyed more than 30,000 people across 25 countries, including the US, which was excluded from the comparison from January 8 to April 26. The margins of error for each country ranged from plus or minus 2.5 to plus or minus the Pew Research Centre did not pinpoint a singular reason for the change, experts point to a combination of evolving geopolitical dynamics and perceptions of leadership. 'As the US potentially looks like a less reliable partner and people have limited confidence, for example, in Trump leading the global economy, China may look different in some people's eyes,' said Laura Silver, associate director of research at also noted that criticisms previously linked to China's global image, such as its human rights record or pandemic response, may be less influential this findings arrive as President Trump faces growing criticism over his administration's foreign policy decisions.
