MCMC unveils pilot drone medicine delivery project at Sabah PMR 2025

The Star11-05-2025
TAWAU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has unveiled a pilot project to deliver medicines using drones at the Sabah Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, held at the Tawau Municipal Council Square.
The drone was one of the main attractions at the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) booth, as a high-impact initiative for the community, especially in remote areas.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who officiated the closing of Sabah PMR 2025 on Sunday (May 11), also visited the Nadi booth and observed the drone in action.
In a statement Sunday, MCMC's corporate communications division stated that the initiative to deliver medicines to Nadi centres using drones will be carried out with the Health Ministry as the main partner and MRANTI and local drone technology providers as strategic partners.
"This initiative is a pilot project to demonstrate the effectiveness of delivering medicines to rural and remote areas from health clinics to selected Nadi centres."
"It also aims to speed up access to medication for communities in hard-to-reach areas, including islands, remote villages, and locations without proper road infrastructure," the statement said.
The first phase of the drone medicine delivery project, involving two Nadi centres, is expected to be implemented in the fourth quarter of 2025.
"This project supports the government's initiative to expand access to future healthcare services that are more equitable and high-quality for rural communities through technology, in line with advancements and the availability of 5G and artificial intelligence (AI)," it added.
According to MCMC, the project will be expanded to 150 Nadi centres in 2026 and eventually to 392 centres by 2027.
At the Sabah PMR programme, the Nadi booth featured various smart services covering five key areas: entrepreneurship, healthcare, lifelong learning, IT awareness, and government services. - Bernama

Khazanah explores AI deals with French and Italian sovereign funds

KUALA LUMPUR: Khazanah Nasional Bhd has engaged in high-level discussions with French and Italian sovereign wealth funds to explore potential collaborations, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). The meetings, held during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visits to Italy, France, and Brazil, aimed to strengthen economic ties and foster innovation. Managing director Datuk Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir highlighted the shared challenges faced by Malaysia, France, and Italy in leveraging AI for global competitiveness. 'We looked at how we can collaborate when it comes to technology innovation, and even some of the mid-tier companies that they have and that we have, and see how we can collaborate further,' he said. Khazanah's partnerships with Italy's Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and France's Bpifrance have already laid the groundwork for deeper cooperation. The sovereign wealth fund's recent financial performance further strengthens its position, with a record net asset value return of 24.6 per cent in 2024. The official visits also included major Malaysian corporations such as Petronas, Tenaga Nasional, Maybank, FGV Holdings, and YTL Power International. Collectively, Malaysia's bilateral trade with Italy, France, and Brazil reached RM50.91 billion last year, underscoring the importance of these economic relationships. - Bernama

Pushing for Asean AI safety amid global turmoil

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia is championing the establishment of an Asean AI Safety Network, a regional initiative aimed at strengthening governance and capacity in this domain, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister, as the current Asean chair, stated that Malaysia welcomed BRICS' efforts in AI Governance. 'We support a vision of artificial intelligence that serves development, not domination – one that embeds ethics, reduces inequality and respects human dignity,' he said at the BRICS Leaders' Summit at the Museum of Modern Art here on Sunday. Also in attendance were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Earlier, the Prime Minister was received by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva upon arrival. Anwar noted the summit was held as the international order faced severe strain. The institutions meant to uphold cooperation were 'faltering under the weight of new realities', he added. 'Trade is increasingly shaped by politics. Technology is framed by security. And the rules that once governed global engagement are being selectively applied or ignored,' he said. Malaysia's position is straightforward: multilateralism is vital for global stability, shared prosperity and sovereign dignity, he said. The Prime Minister said that for multilateralism to endure, it must do more than express common values. 'It must deliver tangible outcomes. It must respond to the realities of a world where markets are fragmenting faster than rules can adapt.' Anwar stated that Asean was not passive and that economic fragmentation was intensifying - tariffs, decoupling and shifting alliances were reshaping trade flows once thought stable. Malaysia, he said, was advancing a strategy that favoured diversification over dependency, resilience over fragility and regional agency over external prescription. 'We therefore welcome BRICS' commitment to an inclusive, rules-based trading system. 'Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship theme of 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' aligns closely with those priorities,' he added. Anwar said the party which shaped the digital future was the question now, with technology now splitting along geopolitical lines. 'Export controls, national security restrictions and diverging standards are creating parallel systems,' he added. Anwar also called for an end to the genocide in Gaza and atrocities in Iran.

After Trump warning, Tengku Zafrul reaffirms Malaysia's commitment to Brics cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — Malaysia is committed to strengthening co-operation in economics, trade and investment with Brics countries, especially with the great potential of artificial intelligence (AI) which needs to be harnessed for inclusive development. 'With Asean's digital economy expected to reach US$2 trillion (US$1=RM4.231) by 2030, this is a golden opportunity that we cannot afford to waste,' said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz in a post on X today. Tengku Zafrul said the side meetings with Brics partner countries and business leaders opened up space for Malaysian companies to explore markets and investment opportunities in future-oriented sectors. He said Miti would continue to facilitate and support local companies to continue to boldly explore new markets. 'Malaysia's commitment is to strengthen a rules-based and inclusive trading system. 'Together, we build a more just and progressive global economic future,' he said. Tengku Zafrul was among the members of the delegation led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit hosted by Brazil. — Bernama
