Marshall Updates Its Mid-Sized Middleton Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Forbes01-07-2025
The new Middleton II portable Bluetooth speaker is available in Black or Cream.
Following hot on the heels of the new Marshall Kilburn III, the iconic amplifier and speaker brand has unveiled an updated version of its mid-sized Middleton Bluetooth speaker, which the brand claims is the most powerful portable audio device to fit in one hand.
This is the second iteration of the Middleton and it now boasts more features, including 30 hours of battery life and True Stereophonic multidirectional sound. A full charge of the onboard battery can provide more than 30 hours of playing time and if the power runs low, a quick 20-minute burst charge can have everything up and running again.
Marshall has enhanced the Middleton II by adding a deeper and more refined bass, even when played at maximum volume. It also features 360° True Stereophonic sound, a multidirectional audio technology that ensures the music always sounds full and powerful from any position around the speaker. There are also separate bass and treble settings.
The Marshall Middletone II has a multidirectional controller as well as separate bass and treble ... More settings.
At the heart of the new Middleton are a couple of 3-inch woofers and two 0.6" tweeters. The amplification is Class D with 2 x 30 W for the woofers and 2 x 10 W for the tweeters.
The Middleton II is also a durable and compact speaker that's built to resist dust, sand, dirt and a few water splashes. It has been tested by immersing it in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes. The rugged exterior is also specifically designed to withstand tough environmental conditions.
'Extending portable playtime is something we put a lot of work into at Marshall, and Middleton II is no exception with its 30+ hours,' says Ebba Gouverneur Regnström, product manager for Marshall Speakers.
'Combine that with improved features such as a built-in microphone for seamless speakerphone calls and a refreshed design that not only looks better but also enhances usability with improved user experience. With support for LE Audio, listeners can also enjoy a more efficient and enhanced listening experience.'
With its detachable carry strap and resistance to dust and water, the Marshall Middleton II is ready ... More for the beach.
The Middleton II's controls have also been updated to eliminate any unnecessary complexity. Users can navigate through playlists with the multidirectional control knob that can play, pause and skip tracks. The control can also be used to answer phone calls and adjust the speaker's volume levels.
Although music comes first, Marshall's new Middleton II is practical, too. If your phone runs out of charge, the speaker can double as a power bank. The Middleton II can also connect via Bluetooth to a smartphone for making hands-free phone calls using the speaker's built-in microphone.
The new Middleton II is available to buy globally from July 15, 2025, from Marshall.com priced at $329.99 / £259.99 / €299.

New technology used by Minnetonka police helps keep officers, public safe

New technology is giving police in Minnetonka, Minnesota, a new look at what's happening on patrol. Every officer is now wearing new body cameras that automatically turn on during a critical call. The cameras can also livestream. When a man made threats at UnitedHealth campus in Minnetonka mid-April, police body cams were on, and leaders in the department were watching. "Watching the body cameras, seeing what was happening, getting a real sense of exactly what's going on at that scene," said Deputy Chief Jason Tait. Police invested in an upgrade: cameras that automatically turn on when an officer draws their service weapon, pulls their taser or turns on squad lights. "With how quickly things happen out on the street, anything that we can do to make the officer's life a little easier," Tait said. The Bluetooth signal turns on all body-worn cameras and dash cams in a 30-foot radius. "One less thing for them to worry about, or allow them to be able to make a better decision and focus their brain power under stress to a different area where it's needed most, that's what we're looking to do," Tait said. That signal transmits the body camera live to the Minnetonka Police Department. Crime analysis supervisor Garith Scherck monitors the movement. "So on the screen, you can see a number of icons. So this is importing all of our current calls for service. So those are 911 calls or incidents officers have created. And then it's also showing the locations of both our vehicles, our squad vehicles and also the officers' body cameras," Scherck said. He says he only taps in during critical incidents. "If it's an alert from an officer's body camera, I'm able to do things like look into what call they're on. So I can look at the individuals and what services they might need," Tait said. They walked us through how it works, showing us what the body camera shows on the officer and what teams in the department can see. "So there's an indication the officer knows they're being live streamed. So right now you can see the 'live,' that means that Garith or somebody is watching," Tait explained while showing the top of his body cam. They say what they can see through this technology is important. "The situational awareness, being able to have a direct line to what the officer is seeing, what that interaction looks like. Get the right resources there. Can also make sure that our officers are safe, help make better decisions," Tait said. That's when the police chief and others can be far away, yet see what's happening on scene and talk with officers if needed. Social workers could also weigh in. "This is a huge technological leap for us. So that helps with de-escalation, that helps with a quicker resolution to the call. Before that, that just simply wasn't possible," Tait said. The body cams also offer translations in more than 50 languages, ensuring police can immediately communicate with the community. Each feature, they say, is designed to increase public safety. "We are putting a lot of effort and a lot of innovation into making sure that our officers are equipped to make the best decisions possible," Tait said. "Have the best outcomes possible, the safest outcomes possible for our community." The department's policy manual is being uploaded onto the body cams this week, so it's at an officer's fingertips whenever there's a question.

This Ultra-Repairable Bluetooth Speaker Addresses the Ugliest Part of Consumer Tech

Right to repair is a big deal lately, and there are plenty of new products that prove it. One of the best examples in the tech world is Framework, which has grown immensely by centering modularity and repairability in the ethos of its laptops and new mini desktop PC. And like any gadget trend worth its weight in lithium-ion, other hardware companies are taking note and hopping on the repairability bandwagon. I'm elated to say that this headwind of modularity has now been extended to the world of audio. This Bluetooth speaker from Teufel, a German audio company whose name translates in English to 'devil' or 'demon,' is anything but evil, in my very secular opinion. The reason I say that is because it actually bothers to tackle the concept of repairability and modularity. According to Teufel, its new speaker, called Mynd, is fully repairable, including the battery, which is often the first component in gadgets of this variety to fail. And when the battery goes, so does the power, and when there's no power, well… that's when things wind up in landfills. It's not just the battery, though. Teufel's Mynd speaker also has open-source software and hardware, which means that you can actually print some components at home with a 3D printer or create new drivers for the speaker. Theoretically, you don't even have to buy the Mynd from Teufel to own one. Instead, if you have a 3D printer and some technical know-how, you can print the shell, use Teufel's software, and buy the components you want. After that, just assemble them correctly, and there you go; you have a Mynd. 'A 3D printer with enough print volume and materials could print all the plastic parts, and we also have published the software the MYND uses internally. That means it needs only a handful of screws and you could build your very own speaker. You can also adjust the acoustic tuning to your personal wishes,' said an engineer for Teufel in a blog post. I love repairability: it's better for the Earth and it's better for people, which are two very important things. That being said, I do have some skepticism about how Mynd sounds, since there are constraints in making something that is almost entirely open-source and modular. One of those things is the speaker grate, which, as the engineers of Mynd state, had to be made of plastic. It's hard to say how that affects the sound without trying one. If there's one real problem with Mynd, it's that Teufel doesn't appear to be shipping it to the U.S. at the moment. If you're in Europe, though, you can order this speaker for €229.99 through Teufel's site. It's worth noting that Teufel does ship speakers to the U.S. with Fender branding, so maybe that restriction will change in the future. The fact of the matter is that people want products that will last and also products they can feel good about. Most people—myself included—have that pang of guilt when something goes wrong with a gadget and you have to trash it, and it's especially demoralizing when you know that things just don't have to be this way. Given the choice, I think most of us would just opt to buy a new battery over an entirely new speaker. Teufel might be demonic by name, but from what I'm seeing, the Mynd feels pretty saint-like.
