Superchunk ‘Key' Up For 13th Album, Tour

Yahoo02-06-2025
Superchunk sound as sprightly as their early days on 'Is It Making You Feel Something,' the first single from the beloved North Carolina indie rock band's 13th album, Songs in the Key of Yikes. The set will be released Aug. 22 on the band's longtime label, Merge.
'This song is about not second-guessing yourself in the very second-guessable process of writing words and music,' frontman Mac McCaughan says. 'It's about the legitimate question of 'who needs this and what is it good for?' but also about not setting such a high bar for making art that you never get started. 'Is it making you feel something?' OK, that's a place to start.'

Songs in the Key of Yikes is the first Superchunk album since 1991's No Pocky for Kitty to not feature drummer Jon Wurster, who left in 2023 to focus on his work with the Mountain Goats and Bob Mould. His role has since been filled by Laura King, who appears on the album. Superchunk is rounded out by longtime guitarist Jim Wilbur and original bassist Laura Ballance, who no longer tours with the band but remains an active contributor to their recordings.
'It's always been the case that everyone is going through something that you may not be aware of,' McCaughan says. 'This is currently more true than ever—but also the case that we are all going through some things together. In the face of that, what good is art and where is happiness found? (Spoiler alert: I don't know.)'
Superchunk will support Yikes on a two-leg fall North American tour, beginning Sept. 5 in Richmond, Va. Click here to pre-order the new album and a limited-edition seven-inch single with 'Is It Making You Feel Something' backed by the exclusive b-side 'Sirens & Lights.'

‘Omniscient Reader' Tops The Korean Box Office And Sets Off Global Buzz

'Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy' has topped the Korean box office. The number one film in South Korea should come as no surprise. Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy earned $1,212,632 in its first week, according to the Korean Film Council. The film opened on July 23 and quickly surpassed the competition, which included the films King of Kings and The Fantastic Four: Four Steps. Distribution rights to the film have so far been sold to 113 countries including the U.S., Japan, Canada and Germany. The film began its rollout in Taiwan and will have its North American and Canadian release on Aug. 1. Films based on popular web novels already start with a loyal if exacting audience and Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy was inspired by the popular 20-volume web novel Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, which had 240 million views. Not only are the novel's fans buying tickets, but the fantasy action thriller has an A-list cast, which includes Ahn Hyo-seop (Business Proposal, Dr. Romantic) and Lee Min-ho (Pachinko, The King: Eternal Monarch). Ahn recently gained international recognition by voicing the role of Jin-woo, leader of the Saja Boys in the animated Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters. Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is his first feature length film and it offered him a chance to act with Lee, an actor he admired growing up. Lee Min-ho stars in 'Omniscient Reader.' The cast also includes Chae Soo-bin (The Rebel, I'm Not a Robot), Shin Seung-ho (A-Teen, Alchemy of Souls), Nana ( Glitch, My Man Is Cupid) and the k-pop groups After School and Orange Caramel), and Jisoo, the most-followed Korean actress on Instagram, (Newtopia, Snowdrop), from the k-pop group Blackpink. Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is directed by Kim Byung-woo (The Terror Live, Take Point), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Lee Jung-min. The film is produced by Won Dong-yeon for Realies Pictures, the studio behind the Along with the Gods film franchise. The story follows Kim Dok-ja (Ahn Hyo-seop), who is the only reader of an obscure web novel titled Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse. Dok-ja, who loyally read the story for 10 years, is not a fan of the ending, so he sends an angry letter to the author, calling it the 'worst novel ending ever." Can he possibly do better? The fantasy storyline offers him a chance. The novel suddenly becomes reality and its omnipotent hero Yu Jung-hyeok (Lee Min-ho) appears before Dok-ja. As the only living human who knows how to survive in the world of the novel, Dok-ja strives to write a new ending. In the process Dok-ja learns the difference between being a protagonist and a reader. Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is released by Capelight Pictures, a Berlin-based international film distributor. Capelight Pictures began releasing foreign films in North America and the UK in 2019.

Paul Gallagher, brother of Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher, charged with rape: Reports

Paul Gallagher, the older brother of Oasis musicians Liam and Noel Gallagher, has been charged with rape and multiple instances of physical abuse following a police investigation, according to multiple reports. Gallagher was charged with rape and three counts of sexual assault, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement, according to The New York Times and BBC. The man also faces three counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of making a threat to kill, assault causing actual bodily harm, and coercive and controlling behavior. Authorities said the charges stem from a 2024 investigation into alleged offenses the occurred between 2022 and 2024, according to the Times and BBC's reporting. An unnamed woman, who is reportedly involved in the case, is receiving support from specially trained officers. USA TODAY has reached out to the Metropolitan Police for comment. Gallagher is expected to make an appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Aug. 27, per the outlets. He denies all accusations against him, Gallagher's law firm Carson Kaye Solicitors said in a July 28 statement. "Paul Gallagher has been charged with a number of offences all relating to a single complainant," the statement read. "Mr. Gallagher has consistently engaged with the police throughout their investigation and always strongly denied the allegations made against him. He looks forward to clearing his name, but as there are now ongoing legal proceedings, our client is unable to comment further." Gallagher's legal troubles come as his famous brothers have been back on the road for Oasis' long-awaited reunion tour, which kicked off July 4 at Cardiff Principality Stadium in Wales. The superstars are scheduled to bring the tour to North American fans on Aug. 24 with a show in Toronto, followed by performances in Chicago; East Rutherford, New Jersey and Pasadena, California. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Liam and Noel Gallagher for comment. While Gallagher has kept a lower profile compared to his rock 'n' roll siblings, he has made several TV and film appearances in support of his brothers' musical careers, including the 2016 documentary "Oasis: Supersonic" and the 2019 film "Liam Gallagher: As It Was." Gallagher also coauthored a 1998 biography, "Brothers: From Childhood to Oasis: The Real Story," which discussed Liam and Noel's early life and rise to fame. Rosé Leaps Over Two Of Jung Kook's Biggest Hits

Rosé climbs to No. 18 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart with 'On My Mind,' which is now the ... More third-highest hit by a K-pop soloist in the tally's history. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 10: Rose visits SiriusXM Studios on October 10, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by) Ever since she released her single 'Apt.' with Bruno Mars in mid-2024, Rosé has been on an incredible and historic run. The Blackpink superstar first reached the airwaves as one of the four singers in the K-pop girl group, but everything changed when it was time to begin pushing tunes from her then-forthcoming solo album, Rosie. In less than a year, Rosé has become one of the most successful K-pop soloists of all time on Billboard's radio rankings. Nearly every frame brings her to a new milestone or helps her manage an unprecedented feat, and this period is no different. Rosé's New Collaboration Rises Again About a month ago, Rosé teamed up with Alex Warren for a new single titled "On My Mind." The collaboration is featured on Warren's debut full-length, You'll Be Alright, Kid, which essentially expands on his EP You'll Be Alright, Kid (Chapter One). "On My Mind" has been living on the Adult Pop Airplay chart for nearly a month, and this frame, it climbs from No. 22 to No. 18. As it does, the track becomes a history-making win for Rosé. 'On My Mind' Passes Two of Jung Kook's Singles "On My Mind" is now the third-highest-charting hit of all time by any K-pop solo musician on the Adult Pop Airplay chart. Just last week, the track sat at No. 22, tying for fourth place on this historic ranking alongside "Too Much," fronted by pop singer The Kid Laroi and which also credits rapper Central Cee and BTS star Jung Kook. That tune peaked at No. 22 before falling off the tally. As "On My Mind" lifts four spots, it not only breaks its tie with "Too Much," but also passes the No. 19 peak of "Seven" by Jung Kook and hip-hop musician Latto. Rosé Earns one of the Highest-Rising Hits Ever Rosé also now claims the third-highest-rising single of all time on the Adult Pop Airplay chart when looking solely at K-pop soloists. Her own 'Apt.' missed out on becoming the first No. 1 by any South Korean figure when it peaked at No. 2. Her bandmate Lisa has pushed her Maroon 5 duet "Priceless" to No. 6 so far.
