"But my son will not return": Bengaluru stampede victim's family receives ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh
He expressed deep sorrow over the demise of his child and said that the financial assistance given to his family wouldn't bring his son back to life.
'I have been given a cheque of Rs 25 lakhs, but my son will not return. I will not use this money for my benefit... I will put it in the account of my daughter and her mother and keep the money for her future,' Devraj told ANI.
Earlier, Tumkur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Subha Kalyan said that the father of the deceased Manoj Kumar was given ex-gratia worth Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister's relief fund.
'11 people lost their lives, one of them was Manoj Kumar from Tumkur district. Today, we received an order from the CM's office to immediately disburse a relief amount of Rs 25 lakh to his father, Devraj. We have handed him the cheque from the CM relief fund,' Kalyan told ANI.
The DM stated that the deceased was a top student with over 85 per cent marks in Karnataka SSLC and was slated to go abroad to secure a job.
'He (the father) shared that he had a lot of dreams for his son, who was a topper and had scored more than 85 per cent in SSLC. He (the son) was slated to go to a foreign country for job opportunities. It is unfortunate that dreams, which a father carries, will not see the light of day,' she added.
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has said that the details regarding the Bengaluru stampede incident will emerge after the probe concludes. The stampede that occurred during celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations claimed 11 lives.
'Everything will be known after investigation, including who said what, what statements were given earlier, when, and by whom,' Parameshwara told reporters here.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that a commission has been formed that is currently conducting an inquiry into the Bengaluru stampede incident, where 11 people had lost their lives on June 4 during RCB's IPL victory celebrations.
He refrained from commenting on the matter, noting that the state's Home Minister would provide a detailed response.'The commission is conducting an inquiry. I will not say much. The Home Minister will reply,' Shivakumar said.
Moreover, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the government is seriously considering moving the city's cricket stadium to a new location to prevent such incidents in the future.
Speaking to the media, Siddaramaiah expressed deep personal pain over the tragedy, confirmed that the government is contemplating long-term solutions, and said that the government can shift the stadium to a different place.
'The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location,' he said.'Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government,' he added.
'Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced,' Siddaramaiah confirmed. (ANI)

Rs 2,528 crore project: Cabinet approves 104-km freight corridor connecting Vadhavan Port with Mumbai-Nagpur E-way
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday gave its approval for the construction of a 104.8-kilometre high-speed freight corridor connecting the upcoming Vadhavan Port in Palghar district with Bharvir in Nashik district, linking it to the Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway, officially named the Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. The corridor, proposed as a strategic infrastructure link under the state's rapid logistics expansion plan, is expected to save nearly 79 km in travel distance and reduce commute time between the port and the expressway from 4–5 hours to just 1–1.5 hours. The project will be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The Cabinet has approved a total outlay of Rs 2,528.90 crore, including a Rs 1,500 crore loan from HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation). The corridor is to be completed within three years. Currently, cargo from Vadhavan must travel via the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, covering around 183.48 km to reach the Samruddhi corridor via Bharvir–Amne. With the new expressway, the distance will be reduced to 104.898 km, saving 78.582 km, officials said. The proposed expressway will pass through Dahanu, Vikramgad, Jawhar and Mokhada in Palghar district, and Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri in Nashik district, offering a direct, fast-moving logistics link between the state's western coast and central and eastern Maharashtra. The Vadhavan Transshipment Port, being developed under the Sagarmala initiative by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd, is expected to serve as a major international cargo hub. To complement this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently constructing a 32-km highway from the port to Tawa on National Highway 48, which will integrate into the larger freight corridor. At present, heavy cargo vehicles must take a longer detour from Bharvir–Amne to reach the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, resulting in additional travel of nearly 82 km. The new corridor is expected to eliminate this inefficiency, enhancing fuel savings and turnaround times for goods transport. Officials said the corridor is being planned with future traffic volumes in mind. With anticipated high-volume freight movement from Vadhavan Port, particularly toward Vidarbha, Marathwada, and North Maharashtra, the expressway will play a vital role in decongesting existing routes and facilitating regional economic development. 'The expressway will benefit a wide range of stakeholders — from large and medium-scale industries to agricultural processing units, educational institutions, and IT parks in Palghar and Nashik. It will also help improve market access and generate local employment,' an MSRDC official said. The Cabinet meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is overseeing major infrastructure and connectivity initiatives in the state. Officials noted that the new corridor will function as a key logistics backbone, enabling affordable, fast, and efficient cargo transport from India's western maritime gateway to its heartland.

BSF arrests two smugglers with gold worth over Rs 1 crore hidden in slippers
Troops of the Border Security Force (BSF), 11th Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier, foiled a major smuggling attempt and arrested two Indian nationals carrying illegal gold worth over Rs 1.05 crore near the India-Bangladesh international border in West on specific and credible intelligence, BSF jawans deployed at Border Outpost (BOP) Vijaymath in Nadia district formed a special team on August 4 to intercept the smugglers, who were reportedly travelling by bus from Karimpur to approximately 10 am, the BSF team spotted the suspected bus in the Mahisbathan area. After confirming the bus number matched the intelligence inputs, troops swiftly intercepted the vehicle and detained two individuals based on prior identification. Upon thorough search, jawans recovered seven gold pieces weighing a total of 1030.720 grams, ingeniously concealed inside the slippers worn by the suspects. Additionally, two mobile phones were also seized. The estimated market value of the seized gold is Rs 1,05,75, smugglers, identified as residents of Murshidabad district and employed as labourers, were taken into custody and brought to BOP Vijaymath for further questioning. During preliminary interrogation, they revealed that the gold had been handed over to them in Jalangi and was intended to be delivered to an individual at the Krishnanagar bus stand.
