LDF govt. more concerned about PR campaigns than attending to Health sector: Shafi Parambil
He was opening a protest meeting outside the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, against the various problems affecting the healthcare sector in the State.
Mr. Shafi alleged that the government was also helping the 'private hospital lobby' by neglecting medical college hospitals. He claimed that the rights of patients for medical care were being curtailed. Mr. Shafi demanded that the government cut down its expenditure on PR campaigns and use the funds for patients' welfare. Highlighting the recent social media post by C.S. Haris, Head of the Department of Urology at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, about the lack of availability of surgical devices and equipment, Mr. Shafi alleged that even a Left sympathiser like him could not hide his disappointment over the state of affairs at the facility.
Meanwhile, members of the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association (KGMCTA) organised a protest meeting on National Doctors' Day on Tuesday (July 1), raising various demands. Opening the protest, C.S. Aravind, KGMCTA State secretary, said that the doctors in government medical colleges were disappointed with the current situation and called for urgent reforms in the sector. The doctors raised demands such as the creation of more posts of medical teachers in view of the rising number of patients, a clear definition of their working hours, and a halt to the temporary transfers of doctors, citing inspections by the National Medical Commission and the Kerala University of Health Sciences.

Chandigarh: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday said the state govt was consistently working to provide better resources to the doctors and quality healthcare services to the citizens. He mentioned that medical colleges were being established in every district. While there were only six medical colleges in 2014, the number has now increased to 15, and nine new colleges are under construction. As a result, MBBS seats in the state increased from 700 in 2014 to 2,185, at present. The state govt aims to increase the MBBS seats to over 3,400 by 2029, said Saini. He appreciated the significant contribution of the Derabassi Medical Association in the field of human service, mentioning that a free dialysis centre has been operational at Chaurasia Hospital for the last two years. Extending greetings and best wishes to all doctors, healthcare workers, and those associated with the medical field on National Doctors' Day, Saini said they were the "true servants of humanity". Their spirit of service, dedication, and sensitivity plays a vital role in building a healthy, safe, and empowered society, he added. The CM emphasised that the govt's objective was to ensure that every doctor had access to adequate resources and every citizen received proper treatment. He said, to strengthen the medical infrastructure, the number of postgraduate seats was increased from 289 to 1,043. In addition, there are 155 seats for PG diplomas, he said. To address the shortage of medics, the govt recruited 3,798 doctors since 2014. The retirement age for doctors was also raised from 58 to 65, said Saini. BJP slams Siddaramaiah's heart attack remark: Covid vaccine given only in Hassan?
BJP Karnataka President BY Vijayendra slammed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over his remarks linking the sudden rise in heart attack deaths in Hassan district to Covid vaccines. Vijayendra called the Chief Minister's statement 'baseless and useless', accusing him of creating panic without evidence.'Is the vaccine given only in Hassan? Over 80 crore people have taken it. Many have died of heart attacks for over a decade. Studies have shown it's not because of vaccines. The Chief Minister should stop giving useless statements,' Vijayendra of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, R Ashoka, also lashed out against Siddaramaiah on social media, accusing the Congress government of deflecting blame instead of taking accountability. 'Instead of providing answers to grieving families, CM Siddaramaiah is indulging in dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric, blaming Covid vaccines approved by global health authorities, without a shred of scientific evidence,' Ashoka posted on X. He added, 'The Covid vaccine was not a BJP vaccine; it was India's vaccine. Developed by our scientists, approved by regulators, and backed by global data. Crores of lives were saved because of India's vaccination drive.''To now use these tragedies to cast doubts on the vaccine and shift accountability is both anti-science and anti-people,' he said.'Siddaramaiah has no knowledge of medical science but still makes such baseless claims. If vaccines are to be blamed, then deaths should be rising across Karnataka, not just in Hassan,' Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, criticising Siddaramaiah. This clearly reflects the poor health facilities under his government. He should immediately form an expert committee to investigate instead of making such statements.'advertisementThe backlash comes after Siddaramaiah said the state government has taken serious note of the alarming rise in cardiac deaths in Hassan, with 23 deaths in the last 40 days, including among suggested that the hasty approval and distribution of Covid vaccines could be among the reasons, citing recent global studies, while ordering a probe led by Jayadeva Institute's Director Dr Ravindranath. The committee has been asked to submit its report in 10 also accused the BJP of politicising the issue rather than reflecting on decisions made when it was in power during the vaccine surge in heart attack deaths, particularly among those aged 19 to 45, caused widespread panic in Hassan and surrounding areas, leading to an 8 per cent spike in footfall at Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru. While the District Health Department says Hassan has reported 507 heart attack cases with 190 deaths in the past two years, this sudden cluster has prompted fresh alarm.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

French scientists discover a new blood type found in only one woman alive today
Imagine needing a blood transfusion and learning that no one else on the planet can help you. French researchers have identified a brand-new human blood type found in only one person on the planet, a 68-year-old woman from Guadeloupe . Doctors have named it the 'Gwada negative' blood type, and it's the first newly discovered blood group system in years, now officially the 48th blood group recognized globally. 'We had never seen anything like it,' said Thierry Peyrard, the French biologist who led the research, announced at the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) Congress in Milan. 'She is the only person in the world who can get along with herself,' said Thierry Peyrard, biologist at France's national blood agency (EFS), which made the discovery. The EFS has discovered 10 of the last 17 known blood group systems, placing France at the forefront of rare blood science. Live Events How did scientists discover the new blood group? It started in 2011, when the woman underwent routine pre-surgery tests in Paris. Her blood reacted to every known donor type. Doctors were alarmed. They couldn't identify what made her immune system reject even the rarest matched blood. The case went cold. Because of the new genome sequencing tools, scientists finally cracked the code. They found a mutation in the PIGZ gene, a change inherited from both parents, that completely altered how proteins bind to red blood cells. Her blood produces antibodies that would destroy any transfused blood, except her own. She is only eligible for autologous transfusions (her own stored blood). In any emergency, there is no donor alive who can help her. Named after Guadeloupe's local nickname 'Gwada,' scientists are now combing donor databases in the Caribbean, hoping to find others who carry the rare mutation. So far, she's alone. Finding a second Gwada negative donor could be life-saving for her or others who carry hidden genetic variations. It could also prevent deadly transfusion errors in rare patients.
