New Jersey flash flood blamed for at least 2 deaths as Gov. Phil Murphy says state was "crushed" by storms

New Jersey remains under a state of emergency Tuesday after Monday night's flash flooding devastated many communities, especially in Union and Somerset counties.
Gov. Phil Murphy toured some of the damage Tuesday morning in Berkeley Heights.
"Last night, we got crushed," Murphy said.
Murphy spoke about two deaths in the city of Plainfield and about a home explosion in the borough of North Plainfield.
"We're seeing more of this, more frequent and more intensity," he said. "Six inches of rain in under two and a half hours, in two waves -- one wave, knocked a lot of these communities a little bit off kilter; the second one just came in for the kill. So we're assessing around all these communities and counties."
Several drivers had to be rescued when cars stalled Monday evening across the Garden State and in parts of New York. Route 22 eastbound remains closed for emergency repairs Tuesday in Somerset County.
Murphy said he was in touch with the White House, and he warned more unsettled weather may be on the way.
"We're in one of these patterns right now, hot and humid, late afternoon-early evening thunderstorms," he said. "It doesn't feel, as I stand here now, as though tonight, tomorrow, Thursday will be at the same level of intensity that we saw last night, but you never say never."
N.J. flash flood blamed for at least 2 deaths in Plainfield
Officials in Plainfield confirmed two people were killed when a vehicle was swept into Cedar Brook during the storm. Their names have not been released.
"They were in a submerged automobile, and their remains were extracted at some point overnight or first thing this morning," Murphy said.
Earlier this month, two other people in the city were killed when a fast-moving storm whipped through. That same system also killed a woman in North Plainfield.
"All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss," Plainfield Mayor Adrian O'Mapp said in a statement. "To lose four residents in such a short span of time is unimaginable. We mourn with the families, and we remain committed to doing all we can to strengthen our emergency response systems and protect residents from future harms."
House explodes in North Plainfield during storm
It was a chaotic night across Union County. As first responders were busy with dozens of water rescues and shutting down roads, they received a report of a house explosion in North Plainfield.
They arrived to find a home on Parkview Avenue in pieces. What was once a beautiful two story home is now just a pile of debris.
The force of the explosion was so strong, pieces of wood ended up halfway down the block. One of the few structures still standing is the staircase leading up to what used to be the second floor.
Firefighters said the home was engulfed in flames when they first arrived. After getting the fire under control, they did a thorough search and determined thankfully that the home was unoccupied. No injuries were reported to firefighters either.
The firefighting effort was complicated by yesterday's torrential rains. First responders had to wade through ankle deep water as they dragged their hose lines.
How the fire started is still under investigation.

More than 130 dead and 100 missing after Texas floods

The search for the more than 100 people missing after devastating floods in Texas will take months, officials say, as the death toll rose to at least 133. Search efforts in the Hill Country area, characterised by its mountainous terrain, resumed on Tuesday after being paused due to heavy rain. In Kerr County, the worst affected area, the number of fatalities rose to 107, including at least 36 children, according to officials. Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly said a large percentage of people missing for were probably visiting the area. "We don't know how many came, we don't know where they are, we don't know how many we lost," he said. "We've heard accounts of trailer after trailer after trailer being swept into the (Guadalupe River) with families in them. Can't find trailers." Dozens of volunteers and emergency teams are continuing to dig through the rubble and search through kilometres of properties. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said 97 people were reported missing in Kerr. Abbott said those people were not registered in a "camp or a hotel." The floods struck during the July 4 public holiday in the United States for Independence Day. Hundreds of tourists had travelled to Texas Hill Country, a popular destination due to its proximity to the Guadalupe River, which overflowed, causing the disaster. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said the process to find all the missing people would take up to six months. Local authorities have faced scrutiny over Leitha's response to the floods and deficiencies in the alert system. An investigation by The New York Times revealed despite a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warning the region would "likely" flood in 2025, Kerr County had not received funding to improve the flood alert system. In a report published in 2024, FEMA estimated that the cost of the new system, concentrating on the Guadalupe River, would be $US1 million, the newspaper said. Between the night of July 3 and early July 4, the National Weather Service recorded between 127 and 279mm of rain in Kerr, Bandera, Tom Green, and Kendall counties. with AP

1 year ago Tuesday: 32 tornadoes touch down in Northern Illinois, Northwest Indiana

Tuesday marks one year since a historic and devastating tornado outbreak in Chicago. On Monday, July 15, 2024, 32 tornadoes touched down in the greater Chicago area alone — including several within the city limits — downing trees and power lines and damaging dozens of homes. This single-day figure of 32 tornadoes for July 15 beat a record of 22 tornadoes on June 30, 2014. Meanwhile, a total of nine were confirmed from the first round of storms the day before — Sunday, July 14. One of the tornadoes on July 15, 2024, an EF-1, hit the Near West Side of Chicago and far western portions of the Loop. An EF-1 tornado also plowed through the city's South and Southwest sides from Chicago Lawn to West Englewood, and an EF-0 tornado hit Chicago's West Town community. Tornadoes also hit several other locations throughout the suburbs and collar counties, other surrounding Northern Illinois counties, and Northwest Indiana. According to the National Weather Service, there were also long stretches with multiple tornadoes occurring at the same time that Monday night. At one point, a total of five tornadoes were ongoing simultaneously.
